Our house is our home. We live there. It is a bay. It is the place we go when we don’t feel like going any place. We don’t plan to move. Our house provides me with a simple pleasure every time I come home to it. I am warmed by some ambiance(氛围)which may merely be dust, but it is our dust and I like it.There’ s been much talk of moving, usually brought up by a leaky pipe, or a neighbor we don’t like. But when anyone asks me how much I think our house is worth, I just smile. They couldn’t buy what that house means to me with all the money in both local banks. The house is not for sale.66The author thinks that his house _______.A.is worth $79,500B. is worth $155,000C. is pricelessD. is worthless67The word “mortgage” in Paragraph two roughly means a certain sum of money from ________.A.a friendB. the governmentC. a real-estate dealerD. a bank68Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.It was not easy for the author to pay off the mortgage.B.People often talk about the purchase of houses.C.The house is a money-making investment.D.Some people have a poor relationship with their neighbors.( B )It was a rainy morning two years ago. Shirley Huxham was cycling gently downhill. As she waved to a friend, her bike slid uncontrollably on the wet road, throwing her to the ground. “I’d never even thought of buying a helmet,” she says. For months she was partly paralysed(瘫痪的) down her left side and still has health problems today. Some might think that Shirley was just unlucky. How dangerous can it be to fall from a bicycle? In fact, each year on Britain’s roads more than 200 people are killed and at least 4,000 seriously injured on bicycles. But these numbers don’t tell the whole story: the majority of the dead and injured were not wearing helmets.A study of bicycle accidents in the US found that helmets could reduce the risk of serious head injury by 85 percent. Yet it is estimated that in Britain, no more than five percent of bicycle-riders wear helmets. Why don’t more cyclists wear them?People think that helmets look foolish, that they’re inconvenient, and that accidents only happen to other people. One of the wrong ideas bicyclists have is that lower speeds can put them at less risk than motorcyclists, who are legally obliged to wear helmets. In fact, according to a British report, a higher percentage of bicyclists than motorcyclists suffer head injuries. And their injuries can be just as severe.Helmets, however, can make a big difference. Shirley wasn’t just unlucky. If she had worn a helmet, she wouldn’t have spent months in hospital. Why take the risk?69The reason why Shirley got badly injured was that _____.A. She was riding her bicycle downhill too fast.B. Her friend’s waving to her made her lose control.C. She ignored the importance of wearing a helmet.D. The ground was barely wet.70Which of the following statements is right according to the passage?A. Wearing helmets will reduce the risk of being killed by 85%.B. Nearly 5 percent of bicycle-riders wear no helmet in UK.C. Motorcyclists suffer more head injuries than bicyclists.D. In UK a motorcyclist’s wearing no helmet is against the law.71People don’t like wearing helmets due to the following reasons except _____.A. Wearing helmets makes them look silly.B. They don’t think wearing a helmet is convenient.C. Falling off a bicycle only happens to other people.D. Wearing a helmet is not fashionable at all.( C )Asian Immigration to AmericaMany Chinese immigrants began crossing the Pacific to arrive in the United States in the mid-1800s. By that time, China’s population had reached about 430 million, and the country was suffering from severe unemployment, poverty, and famine(饥荒). The 1848 discovery of gold in California began to tempt Chinese immigrants to the United States. Then, in 1850, the Taiping Rebellion broke out in their homeland. This rebellion against the Chinese government took some 20 million lives and caused such suffering that thousands of Chinese left for the United States. In the early 1860s, as the Central Pacific Railroad began construction of its portion of the transcontinental railroad, the demand for railroad workers further increased Chinese immigration.Chinese immigrants mainly settled in western cities, where they often worked as laborers or servants or in skilled trades. Others worked as merchants. Because native-born Americans kept them out of many businesses, some Chinese immigrants opened their own.Another group of Asians, the Japanese, also immigrated to the United States. Until 1900, however, their numbers remained small. Between 1900 and 1908, large numbers of Japanese migrated to the United States as Japan began building both an industrial economy and an empire. Both developments interrupted the economy of Japan and caused hardships for its people, thus stimulating emigration.Until 1910 Asian immigrants arriving in San Francisco first stopped at a two-story shelter at the wharf (码头). As many as 500 people at a time were often squeezed into this structure, which Chinese immigrants from Canton called muk uk, or “wooden house.” In January 1910, California opened a few barracks on Angel Island to accommodate the Asian immigrants. Most of the immigrants were young males in their teens or twenties, who nervously awaited the results of their immigration hearings in dormitories packed with double or triple tiers of bunks. This unpleasant delay could last for months. On the walls of the detention barracks, the immigrants wrote anonymous poems in pencil or ink. Some even carved their verse into the wood.72Which of the following statements is NOT the reason of Chinese immigration to America?A. The population explosion led to severe unemployment, poverty, and famine.B. The discovery of gold in the United States was a great temptation to Chineseimmigrants.C. The great suffering caused by Taiping Rebellion forced many people leave China.D. The United States needed great man power to complete its railroad construction.73When Chinese immigrants got to America, they usually took the following jobs except ______?A. Railroad constructorsB. Family servantsC. Governmental officialsD. Businessmen74The Japanese immigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 1900s because _______.A. the numbers of Japanese immigrants stayed low until 1900B. the Japanese immigrants to the States wanted to learn moreC. the enormous social changes were taking place in JapanD. the Japanese immigrants wanted to do more businesses in the new world.75What does the underlined word mean?A. Foods.B. Camps.C. Wharfs.D. Customs.Section CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.(5* 2 points=10 points)Understanding Chinese ParentsA).What Chinese parents understand is that nothing is fun until you’re good at it. To get good at anything you have to work, and children on their own never want to work, which is why it is crucial to override(不顾) their preferences. This often requires a strong will on the part of theparents because the child will resist; things are always hardest at the beginning, which is where Western parents tend to give up. But if done properly, the Chinese strategy produces a virtuous circle(良性循环). Practice, practice, practice is crucial for excellence; rote repetition(死记硬背) is not welcome in America. Once a child starts to excel at something —whether it’s math, piano or ballet —he or she gets praise, admiration and satisfaction. This builds confidence and makes the once not-fun activity fun. This in turn makes it easier for the parent to get the child to work even more.B).I think there are three big differences between the Chinese and Western parents.C).First, I’ve noticed that Western parents are extremely anxious about their children’s self-esteem. They worry about how their children will feel if they fail at something, and they constantly try to reassure their children about how good they are despite a mediocre(平庸的)performance on a test. In other words, Western parents are concerned about their children’s feelings. Chinese parents aren’t. They assume strength, not fragility, and as a result they behave very differently.D).Second, Chinese parents believe that their kids owe them everything. The reason for this is a little unclear, but it’s probably a combination of Confucian filial piety(孝顺)and the fact that the parents have sacrificed and done so much for their children. Anyway, the understanding is that Chinese children must spend their lives repaying their parents by obeying them and making them proud.E).Third, Chinese parents believe that they know what is best for their children and therefore do not respect all of their children’s own desires and preferences. That’s why Chinese daughters can’t have boyfriends in high school and why Chinese kids often can’t go camping.F).D on’t get me wrong: It’s not that Chinese parents don’t care about their children. Just the opposite. They would give up anything for their children.G).Western parents try to respect their children’s individuality, encouraging them to pursue their true passions, supporting their choices, and providing a favorable environment. By contrast, the Chinese believe that the best way to protect their children is by preparing them for the future, letting them see what they’re capable of, and arming them with skills, work habits and inner confidence that no one can ever take away.()31. Western parents try to show respect for their children’s choices, and provide them with an advantageous environment.()32. Chinese parents do n’t respect all of their children’s own desires and preferences because they believe that they know what is best for their children.()33. It is believed that Chinese children must take their lives to pay back their parents by complying with them and becoming their pride.()34. It’s important to reject the children’s preferences because they themselves refuse to work hard.()35. Western parents continuously try to remove their children’s doubts by saying they are very good, even though they have showed a low quality on a test.Section CDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice among the options provided. (10*2 points= 20 points)Passage 1If you live in a city in North America or Europe, you have probably never thought much about water. Whenever you need some, you turn on the tap(水龙头) and there it is. Millions of people in other parts of the world are not so lucky. They have trouble getting enough clean water for their basic needs. This situation may soon become common all around the world. Scientist believes that the lack of clean water may be one of the biggest issues in the twenty-first century. The reasons for this are clear. On the one hand, people are using more water than ever. Over the last fifty years, the population of the world has more than doubled. So has the demand for water. On the other hand, supplies of clean water are disappearing. Many sources of surface water are too polluted and unhealthy for use as drinking water. This has forced more and more people to drill wells so they can get clear water from underground. If the world does not want to go thirsty in the near future, scientists say, further pollution must be prevented. Around the world, government must make real changes in industry, agriculture, and waste disposal.36. According to the first paragraph, millions of people in the word have trouble in getting_______________A) Enough facilities to supply drinking water.B) Enough food for the increasing population.C) Enough clean water for their basic needs.D) Enough living space in the world.37. What has happened in the actual situation of water in the last 50 years?A) Reasons of using too much water have been found.B) Sources of surface water have become less polluted.C) Enough clean water can be obtained from underground.D) The demand for water has more than doubled.38. It is implied from the passage that underground water is now______________A) Still healthy for useB) Also seriously pollutedC) The only source of clean waterD) The only way to save the world from going thirsty39. What should be done to prevent the world from going thirsty in the future according to the writer?A) To develop more water industries.B) To cut down the world population.C) To stop the pollution of water.D) To make changes in the world economy.40. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A) European people are worrying about clean drinking water.B) Scientists think lack of clean water is a serious problem in the future.C) People prefer drinking underground water rather than surface water.D) Disposal of wastes has nothing to do with water pollution.Passage 2High-quality customer service is preached (宣扬) by many, but actually keeping customers happy is easier said than done.Shoppers seldom complain to the manager or owner of a retail store, but instead will warn their friends, relatives, co-workers, strangers—and anyone who will listen.Store managers are often the last to hear complaints, and often find out only when their regular customers decide to frequent their competitors, according to a study jointly conducted by Verde Group and Wharton School.“Storytelling hurts retailers and entertains consumers,”said Paula Courtney, President of the Verde Group. “The store loses the customer, but the shopper must also find a replacement.”On average, every unhappy customer will complain to at least four others, and will no longer visit the specific store. For every dissatisfied customer, a store will lose up to three more due to negative review. The resulting “snowball effect”can be disastrous to retailers.According to the research, shoppers who purchased clothing faced the most problems. Ranked second and third were grocery and electronics customers. The most common complaints include filled parking lots, cluttered (塞满了的) shelves, overloaded racks, out-of-stock goods, long check-out lines, and rude salespeople.During peak shopping hours, some retailers solved parking problems by getting moonlighting (业余兼职的) local police to work as parking assistants. Some hired flag wavers to direct customers to empty parking spaces. This guidance eliminated the need for customers to circle the parking lot endlessly, and avoided conflict between those eyeing the same parking space.Retailers can relieve the headaches by redesigning store layouts, pre-stocking sales goods, hiring speedy and experienced cashiers, and having sales representatives on hand to answer questions. Most importantly, salespeople should be diplomatic and polite with angry customers.“Retailers who’re responsive and friendly are more likely to smooth over issues than those who aren’t so friendly,”said Professor Stephen Hoch. “Maybe something as simple as a greeter at the store entrance would help.”Customers can also improve future shopping experiences by filing complaints to the retailer, instead of complaining to the rest of the world. A Most people buy a lot ofgifts just before Christmas. But somepeople think we buy too much. They have started a special day called Buy NothingDay. They don ’t want anyone to goshopping that day. Buy Nothing Day is November 29. It ’s 25 days before Christmas. It ’s after Thanksgiving andoften the first day of Christmas shopping. At this time, we see ads in newspapersand on TV telling us to “ buy, buy, buy! ”The idea for Buy Nothing Day started in Vancouver, British Columbia. Now peopleall over the world celebrate Buy NothingDay. In California, parentsand children get together to read stories, sing songs, and paint pictures. Thechildren talk about why they don ’t need a lot of toys. This year, in Manchester,England, people dressed up to tell peoplethat we buy too much. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, high school students wanted to tell other students about Buy Nothing Day. They organized a spaghetti dinner to give people information about Buy Nothing Day. They asked restaurants in the neighborhood to donate the food. They made posters and talked to other students about it. The dinner was a big success, and many students agreed not to buy anything on November 29. The students at high school liked the idea of this new tradition. Next year, they want to have another dinner to tell more peopleabout Buy Nothing Day! 1. Which of the following is NOT the day forpeople to celebrate Buy Nothing Day? A.The first day after Christmas. Apple has cleverly taken advantage of thepower of the letter“i” ? C-- and many other brands are following suit. TheBBC’s iPlayer--- which allows Web usersto watch TV programs on the Internet---used the title in 2008. A lovely bear---popular in the US and UK --- thatplays music and video is called“iTeddy ”. A slimmed -down version( 简装本 ) of London ’s Independent newspaper wasstarted last week under the name“i”. In general, single-letter prefixes(前缀) have been popular since the 1990s, whenterms such as e-mail and e-commerce(电子商务 ) first came into use. Most“i”products are targeted at(针对)young people and considering the major readersof Independent ’s “i ”, it ’s no surprise that they ’ve select ed this fashionable name. Butit ’s hard to see what ’s sospec ial about the letter“i”. Why not use “a”,“b”, or“c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of theLanguage Center at King’s College, London,“i ” works because its meaning has becomeambiguous. When Apple uses “i ”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive,Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems itdidn ’t have one clear definition (定义) , ”he says. “However, thanks to Apple, theterm is now connected withportability (轻巧) .”adds Thorne.Clearly the letter “i ” also agrees with the idea that the Western World iscentered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason. Along with “Google” and “” , readers of BBC Magazines voted “i ” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade( 十年 ). But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900sto 1990s, products with“2000” in theirnames became fashionable as the yearwas connected with all things advancedand modern. However, as we entered the new century, the fashion disappeared. 4. People use iPlayer to __________. A.listen to music B. make a call C. watch TV programs online D.read newspapers 5. We can infer that the Independent’s“i” is designed for _________. A. young readers B. old readers C. fashionable women D. eng ineers 6. The underlined word “ambiguous” means“__________”. A. popular B. uncertain C. clear D. unique 7. Nowadays, the “i ” term often reminds people of the products which are__________. A. portable B. environmentally friendly C. advanced D. recyclable 8. The writer suggests that __________. A.“i”products are often of high quality B.iTeddy is alive bear C. the letter“b”replaces letter“i” to name the products D. the popularity of“i”products may not last long C Next Stop: Planet Mars Fly me to the moon? That’s not far enough. On September 14,2011, NASA released designs for a super rocket, the Space Launc h System (SLS). This time the final destination will be Mars. The SLS isa huge, liquid? C fuelled rocket. If itis fully developed, it will be the mostpowerful rocket ever built. Its lift capability will be much bigger than that of the space shuttle of Saturn 5, the rocket that sent the Apollo missions to the moon. NASA is planning to launch its first unmanned test flight in 2017. It is hoped that the first crew will fly in 2021 and astronauts will make it to a nea rby asteroid ( 小行星 ) in 2025. NASA hopes to send the rocket and astronauts to Marsfrom the asteroid by the 2030s, accordingto the Associated Press (AP). NASA used liquid rockets to send Apollo, Gemini and Mercury into space, but later changed tosolid rockets boosters (助推火箭) because they were cheaper. Tragically, however, a booster flaw (缺点) caused the space shuttle Challenger to crash in 1986. The new project plans to return to liquid fuel. According to AP, the rockets will at first be able to carry 77 to 110 tons of payload ( 净载重量 ). Eventually they will be able tocarry 143 tons into space, maybe even as many as 165 tons, NASA officials said. By comparison, the Saturn5 booster could lift 130 tons and the space shuttle just 27 tons. However, unlikereusable shuttles, these powerful rocketsare mostly one use only. New ones haveto be built for every launch. Thiswill be very costly. NASA estimates thatit will cost about $3 billion (19 billionyuan) per year, or $ 18 billion until thefirst test flight in 2017. NASA hopes tomake money by allowing private companiesto send astronauts to the InternationalSpace Station like giant taxi services, sothat the program can be“sustainable”.“This is perhaps the biggest thing forspace exploration in decades,” said Senator Bill Nelson, a former astronaut.“The goal is t o fly humans safely beyond low ? C Earth orbit (轨道) and deep into outer space where we cannot only survive, but one day also live environmentallyfriendly ” 9. According to NASA ’s schedule, it will take years to fullycomplete the SLS program. A. about 6 B. about 10 C. less than 14 D. more than 19 10. It can be inferred from the passagethat . A. the SLS program is planning tomake reusable rockets B. t he goal of theSLS program is to enable humans to live onthe moon C. the US government may not have provided enough money for the SLS program D. NASA will use SLS as a space taxibetween the Earth and Mars.第二节(共5小题,每题 2 分,满分 10 分 ) 依据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: Choose the best answers to complete the questions after reading the texts.Whenever two or more unusual traits or situations are found in the same place, it is tempting to look for more than a coincidental relationship between them. The high Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau certainly have extraordinary physical characteristics, and the cultures which are found there are also unusual, though not unique. However, there is no intention of adopting Montesquieu’s view of climate and soil as cultural determinants. The ecology of a region merely poses some of the problems faced by the inhabitants of the region, and while the problems facing a culture are important to its development, they do not determine it.The appearance of the Himalayas during the later tertiary Period and the accompanying further raising of the previously established ranges had a marked effect on the climate of the region. Primarily, of course, it blocked the Indian monsoon from reaching Central Asia at all. Secondarily, air and moisture from other directions were also reduced.Prior to the raising of the Himalayas, the land now forming the Tibetan uplands had a dry continental climate with vegetation and animal life similar to that of much of the rest of the region on the same parallel, but somewhat different than that of the areas farther north, which wer already drier. With the coming of the Himalayas and the relatively sudden drying out of the region, there was a severe thinning out of the animal and plant populations. The ensuing incomplete Pleistocene glaciation had a further thinning effect, but significantly did not wipe out life in the area. Thus, after the end of the glaciation there were only a few varieties of life extant from the continental species. Isolated by the Kunlun range from the Tarim basin and Turfan depression, species which had already adapted to the dry steppe climate and would otherwise have been expected to flourish in Tibet, the remaining native fauna and flora, multiplied. Armand describes the Tibetan fauna as not having great variety, but being “striking” in the abundance of the particular species that are present. The plant life is similarly limited in variety, with some observers finding no more than seventy varieties of plants in even the relatively fertile Eastern Tibetan V alleys, with fewer than ten food crops. Tibetan “tea” is a major staple, perhaps replacing the unavailable vegetables. The difficulties of living in an environment at once dry and cold, and populated with species more usually found in more hospitable climates, are great. These difficulties may well have influenced the unusual polyandroussocieties typical of the region. Lattimore sees the maintenance of multiple-husband household as being preserved from earlier forms by the harsh conditions of the Tibetan uplands, which permitted no experimentation and “froze” the cultures which came there. Kawakita, on the other hand, sees the polyandry as a way of easily permitting the best householder to become the head husband regardless of age. His detailed studies of the Bhotea village of Tsumje do seem to support this idea of polyandry as a method of talent mobility in a situation where even the best talet is barely enough to survival. In sum, though arguments can be made that a pre-existing polyandrous system was strengthened and preserved (insofar as it has been) by the regors of the land, it would certainly be an overstatement to lay causative factors of any stronger nature to the ecological influences in this case.1.The purpose of the passage is to _____.A. describe Tibetan fauna and floraB. describe the social organization of typical Tibetan villagesC. analyze the causes of Tibet’s unusual animal and plant populationD. analyze the possible causal links between Tibetan ecology and society2.What was the significance of the fact that the Pleistocene glaciation didnot wipe out life entirely in the area?A. Without life, man could not flourish either.B. The drying out was too sudden for most plants to adapt to the climate.C. If the region had been devoid of life, some of the other species fromnearby arid areas might possibly have taken over the area.D. The variety of Tibetan life was decreased.3.The author’s knowledge of Tibet is probably _____.A. based on firsthand experienceB. the result of life long studyB. derived only from booksD. derived from Chinese sources4.According to the passage, which of the following would probably be themost agreeable to Montesquieu?A. All regions have different soils and, thus, different cultures.B. Some regions with similar climates will have similar cultures.C. Cultures in the same area, sharing soil and climate, will be essentiallyidentical.D. The plants of a country, by being the food of its people, cause thepeopleto have similar views to one another.5.The species of fauna and flora remaining in Tibet after the Pleistoceneglaciations can properly be called continental because they _____.A. are originally found in continental climatesB. are the only life forms in Tibet, which is as big as a continentC. have been found in other parts of the Asian continentD. are found in a land mass that used to be a separate continentText BThis year, like lots of other people, I'm going to try to make my own Christmas presents. It's not the first time that I've promised myself this. Being a milliner, and an all-round crafty type, I've often thought I should put my money where my mouth is. But this year I'm really going to stick to it. It's partly that I'm short of cash, but also that I've recently returned from an inspiring trip around Britain, looking into "make do and mend" for BBC2's Newsnight.I dreamed up the trip a few months ago. The thought of traveling the country--making things as I went, meeting artists and craftspeople--sounded like the perfect way to spend the summer. I'd pack a tent and a sewing machine and off I'd go. But by the time I finalized my plans and hit the road, leaves were already crunching under foot. It seemed crazy to camp with winter on the way; instead, Newsnight viewers offered me board and lodging in return for help with a craft task. There was an overwhelming response. My tasks ranged from darning (缝补) a moth-eaten monk's jumper to making trousers for a stilt walker. Textile students in Harpenden offered to pay for my petrol in return for a talk about hats. In Derby, Amy needed help to transform an old pair of curtains.I was really struck by people's growing enthusiasm for making things. I asked a WI group in Sheffield how many could sew, and only a few put up their hands. But when I asked who wanted to learn, nearly everyone responded positively. At the Textile Workshop in Nottingham, the number of classes on offer has doubled in a year, and a knitting club in Leeds is growing by the week.Craft is definitely fashionable at the moment. But over and above fashion, we're learning to appreciate effort and quality again. Perhaps once people rediscover the pleasure to be gained from making something unique, it may stick.Sue Pilchard is curator (管理者) of quilts at the V&A, where next spring she'll be putting on the museum's first major quilting exhibition. Sue believes thereturn to crafting is wrapped up in how we are redefining ourselves. "There's certainly a movement.., towards a new domesticity. People, especially women, are starting to think about the way they live their lives. It's 40 years since the first women's liberation conference was held in Oxford. Since that time we've been in the workplace, and we've had the opportunity of choice. Now we're deliberately choosing to go back into the home."Whether you agree with that or not, there's something about Christmas that brings out the artistic streak in everyone. Whether it's baking mince pies or decking the halls, we're all prepared to have a go. So if you fancy pushing the boat out and making a few presents, try these really simple ideas, each inspired by my recent journey. They make ideal stocking fillers or small gifts, and take no longer than 30 minutes each. Play some carols, settle down with a steaming cup of cocoa, and forget the cold. You'll save yourself a bit of money and spread a little bit of love too!6. The author promised to make herself a Christmas present this year mainly becauseA. she wanted to save money.B. she couldn't afford to buy one.C. she was inspired by her trip for a BBC2 program.D. A lot of people make presents themselves.7. Which of the following is CORRECT about the author's trip to Britain?A. She met many artists and craftsmen on her way to Britain.B. When was the author probably on her trip to Britain?A. Spring.B. Late Summer.C. Late Autumn.D. Winter.9. According to the passage, through crafting people learn toA. appreciate the efforts in manual things.B. keep up with fashion.C. stick to something interesting.D. understand craft better.10. What is the author's view on homemade Christmas presents?A. Making Christmas presents can just convey a bit of your love.B. It would take long time to prepare a Christmas present.C. You can drink a cup of hot cocoa when you make preparations.D. People can find their artistic talent in making Christmas presents.Text CAt the age of twelve years, the human body is at its most vigorous. It has yet to reach its full size and strength, and its owner his or her full intelligence; but at this age the likelihood of death is least. Earlier, we were infants and young children, and consequently more vulnerable; later, we shall undergo a progressive loss of our vigor and resistance which, though imperceptible at first, will finally become so steep that we can live no longer, however well we look after ourselves, and however well society, and our doctors, look after us.This decline in vigor with the passing of time is called ageing. It is one of the most unpleasant discoveries which we all make that we must decline in this way, that if we escape wars, accidents and disease we shall eventually "die of old age", and that this happens at a rate which differs little from person to person, so that there are heavy odds in favor of our dying between the ages of sixty-five and eighty. Some of us will die sooner, a few will live longer--on into a ninth or tenth decade. But the chances are against it, and there is a virtuallimit on how long we can hope to remain alive, however lucky and robust we are.Normal people tend to forget this process unless and until they are reminded of it. We are so familiar with the fact that man ages, that people have for years assumed that the process of losing vigor with time, of becoming more likely to die the older we get, was something self-evident, like the cooling of a hot kettle or the wearing-out of a pair of shoes. They have also assumed that all animals, and probably other organisms such as trees, or even the universe itself, must in the nature of things "wear out".Most animals we commonly observe do in fact age as we do, if given the chance to live long enough; and mechanical systems like a wound watch, or the sun, do in fact an out of energy in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics (热力学) (whether the whole universe does so is a moot point at present). But these are not analogous to what happens when man ages. Arun-down watch is still a watch and can be rewound. An old watch, by contrast, becomes so worn and unreliable that it eventually is not worth mending. But a watch could never repair itself--it does not consist of living parts, only of metal, which wears away by friction. We could,at one time, repair ourselves--wellenough, at least, to overcome all but the most instantly fatal illnesses and accidents. Between twelve and eighty years we gradually lose this power; an illness which at twelve would knock us over, at eighty can knock us out, and into our grave. If we could stay as vigorous as we are at twelve, it would take about 700 years for half of us to die, and another 700 for the survivors to be reduced by half again.11. Which of the following statements is INCORRECT?A. Our first twelve years represent the peak of human development.B. People usually are unhappy when reminded of ageing.C. Normally only a few of us can live to the eighties and nineties.D. People are usually less likely to die at twelve years old.12. The word "it" in the last sentence of Paragraph Two refers toA. remaining alive until 65.B. remaining alive after 80.C. dying before 65 or after 80.D. dying between 65 and 80.13. What is ageing?A. It is usually a phenomenon of dying at an old age.B. It is a fact that people cannot live any longer.C. It is a gradual loss of vigor and resistance.D. It is a phase when people are easily attacked by illness.14. What do the examples of watch show?A. Normally people are quite familiar with the ageing process.B. All animals and other organisms undergo the ageing process.C. The law of thermodynamics functions in the ageing process.D. Human's ageing process is different from that of mechanisms.15. Which of the following best fits the style of this passage?A. Argumentation.B. Exposition.C. Narration.D. Description.。

(10*2 points= 20 points) Passage 1If you live in a city in North America or Europe, you have probably never thought much about water. Whenever you need some, you turn on the tap(⽔龙头) and there it is. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A) European people are worrying about clean drinking water.B) Scientists think lack of clean water is a serious problem in the future.C) People prefer drinking underground water rather than surface water.D) Disposal of wastes has nothing to do with water pollution.Passage 2High-quality customer service is preached (宣扬) by many, but actually keeping customers happy is easier said than done. Shoppers seldom complain to the manager or owner of a retail store, but instead will warn their friends, relatives, co-workers, strangers—and anyone who will listen.Store managers are often the last to hear complaints, and often find out only when their regular customers decide to frequent their competitors, according to a study jointly conducted by Verde Group and Wharton School.“Storytelling hurts retailers and entertains consumers,”said Paula Courtney, President of the Verde Group. Retailers are hard-pressed to improve when they have no idea what is wrong.41. Why are store managers often the last to hear complaints?A) Most customers won’t bother to complain even if they have had unhappy experiences.B) Customers would rather tell their unhappy experiences to people around them.C) Few customers believe the service will be improved.D) Customers have no easy access to store managers.42. What does Paula Courtney imply by saying “…the shopper must also find a replacement”(Line 2, Para. 4)A) New customers are bound to replace old ones.B) It is not likely the shopper can find the same products in other stores.C) Most stores provide the same kind of service.D) Not complaining to manager causes the shopper some trouble too.43. Shop owners often hire moonlighting police as parking assistants so that shoppers________.A) can stay longer browsing in the storeB) won’t have trouble parking their carsC) won’t have any worries about securityD) can find their cars easily after shopping44. What contributes most to smoothing over issues with customers?A) Manners of the salespeople.B) Hiring of efficient employeesC) Huge supply of goods for sale.D) Design of store layout.45. To achieve better shopping experiences, customers are advised to ________.A) exert pressure on stores to improve their serviceB) settle their conflicts with stores in a diplomatic wayC) voice their dissatisfaction to store managers directlyD) shop around and make comparisons between storesSection DDirections: After reading it, you are required to find the items equivalent to (等同于) those given in Chinese in the table below.
