Disney.Johannes Fritz, an Austrian biologist, needed to come up with a plan again if he was going to prevent his rare and beloved birds from going extinct. To survive the European winter, the northern bald ibis needs to migrate south for the winter over the Alps. But shifting climate patterns have delayed when the birds begin to migrate and they are now reaching the mountains too late to make it over the peaks, locking them in an icy death trap. Determined to save them, he decided to teach the birds a new, safer migration route by guiding them himself in a tiny aircraft. He was confident that he could succeed in this daring, unconventional plan.the last in the wild, causing the birds to disappear entirely from the wild. When Mr. Fritz was born 56 years ago, the northern bald ibis could be found in Europe only in captivity (圈养) .Mr.Fritz has spent his career reintroducing the birds into the wild. Through years of trial and error, he learned to fly like a bird. He modified (改装) a lightweight aircraft so it would fly at speeds slow enough for the birds to keep up. In 2004, he led the first flock from Austria to Italy, and has since led more migrations. But the route he originally taught the ibises does not work successfully. With climate change warming the area where the birds summer, they now start their migration at the end of October instead of the end of September. The trip is expected to take about six weeks, “Still, we’re optimistic that it’ll work,” said Mr. Fritz. His family and colleagues witnessed the risks he was taking. “But the unavoidable risks are necessary,” Mr. Fritz said. “It’s not so much a job, but my life’s purpose.”4.What was Johannes Fritz’s plan?A. To shorten bald ibises’ migration route.B. To lead bald ibises to migrate on a new route.C. To better the climate patterns for bald ibises.D. To find out a safer destination for bald ibises.5.What does the underlined word “devoured” in paragra ph 3 mean?A. Destroyed.B. Abused.C. Released.D. Raised.6.Why was Mr. Fritz’s initial route for the birds ineffective?A. Owing to the long time it consumes.B. For the slow speed of his modified aircraft.C. Because of the toughness along the first route.D. Due to higher temperatures in the summer habitat.7.Which of the following can best describe Mr. Fritz?A. Honest.B. Innovative.C. Straightforward.D. Demanding. As you’re drafting your New Year’s resolutions, you may think that it takes 21 days of repeating an action for that action to become a habit. So, you set out to go to the gym for 21 days, thinking that by day 22 heading to the gym will feel automatic—maybe even fun. However, that 21-day estimate isn’t true. A habit expert Wendy Wood found that this falsehood came from a self-help book in the 1960s and actually described how long it takes to get used to your new appearance after plastic surgery. It’s important to note t hat getting used to something is not the same thing as forming a habit, and perhaps the two concepts got confused along the way, giving rise to the term today. To figure out how long it actually takes to form a habit, Phillippa Lally, and her team did a series of research. They recruited 96 people and asked each person to choose one new habit and report each day on whether or not they did the behavior and how automatic the behavior felt. Some people chose simple habits like “drinking a bottle of water with lunch.” Others chose m ore difficult tasks like “running for 15 minutes before dinner.” At the end of 12 weeks, the researchers analyzed the data to determine how long it took each person to go from starting a new behavior to automatically doing it.The study found that it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic—66 days to be exact. And if you want to set your expectations appropriately, the truth is that it will probably take you anywhere from two months to eight months to build a new behavior into your life. Interestingly, the researchers also found that “m issing one opportunity to perform the behavior did not affect the habit formation process.” That is to say, it doesn’t matter if you mess up every now and then. Building better habits is not an all-or-nothing process. So, for those who wish to form certain habits, persistence is king. To form a good habit, we need to pay more energy and effort.8.What does “21days” actually mean according to Wendy Wood?A. The time one drafts a book.B. The time one develops a new habit.C. The time one gets used to something.D. The time one recovers from a surgery. 9.How did the researchers do the research?A. By doing questionnaires.B. By tracking people’s behaviors.C. By making predictions.D. By analyzing data of previous studies. 10.What can we infer from paragraph 5?A. Habits cannot be noticed easily.B. The amount of time a habit takes varies.C. One should perform a behavior constantly.D. It takes exactly 66 days to form a new habit.11.What is the best title of the passage?A. Habit—good or not?B. Better habit, better life?C. 21days to form a habit?D. Hit or miss with habits? The house had been cleaned and decorated elegantly. The air smelt fresh. Little labels on all we saw around the house displayed important details: date of purchase and the current selling price. We were at a garage sale. There was no talking or bargaining. Buyers could pick up at the listed price. All efforts that release cash that is locked into stuff touch me deeply. If they break conventional ideas, I will like them even more. It is my view that people love to follow suit and end up with emotions they ought to feel, rather than being true to themselves. To say that one does not care for one’s grandmother’s necklace is considered rude, so one would simply keep it in the locker and pass it on to the next generation. No longer so, I am guessing. It’s not always about money, but perhaps about considering one’s choices. My argument always is to use stuff, if you like it so much. Wear those pieces of jewellery; use those pieces of furnitures; take home those piles of old-time bedsheets. But if none of them fit into your current home, allow someone else to take them home. Turn those properties over instead of leaving them unused.Hoarding (囤积) is not a virtue. It is a waste of the money that is locked into the property you are hoarding. I may use it sometime in the future, say some. Give that a time frame. If you are holding something you haven’t used even once in five years, ask yourself if someone else may need it. Don’t sell if you don’t care for money; but do give it away. All else needs to earn their place for their value and usefulness for you. Celebrate the liberation from hoarding and let there be light!12.What do people often do at the garage sale?A. Purchase a garage.B. Label their belongings.C. Talk about decoration.D. Trade their unused stuff.13.Why does the author mention “neeklace” in par agraph 2?A. To call for respect towards the elderly.B. To advocate holding onto the family tradition.C. To show the financial condition of an average family.D. To prove people tend to follow suit against their wills.14.What does the author believe according to paragraph 4?A. It is a good idea to save money.B. A good taste counts in purchase.C. Unused items deserve a new owner.D. The outdated should be thrown away.15.What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?A. To call on people to get rid of hoarding.B. To show his worry about wasting resources.C. To draw attention to conserving the traditions.D. To inspire people to spend more on meaningful things.二、七选五16.In our ever-evolving world, where both personal and professional areas are loaded with challenges, problem solving skills are increasingly valuable in the workplace. ①Here’s how to enhance your strategy.Clear and brief communication is the key to effective problem-solving, acting as the bridge that connects diverse perspectives toward a common goal. ② It involves choosing the right words, structuring information logically, and being mindful of the audience to ensure that your message is both impressive and comprehensible. After breakfast, I was already running late, but figured I could make it if I hurried. As I pulled into the parking lot of the store, I noticed a young man in a wheelchair who seemed to be struggling. “Someone else will stop and help him,” I thought. However, no one stopped. I got out, and walked over to see what the trouble was.“Is there anything I can do?” I asked. It was then that I noticed he wasn’t able to speak, and was still struggling with the chair.I looked down at the chair and noticed that the clamps (夹具) holding the electronic keyboard had apparently become loose causing the equipment to slip down, out of his reach.I pulled it back into place and then re-tightened the clamps. He hit a key on the keyboard. An electronic voice told me, “Thank you.” He then found the control that steered (操纵) the chair, turned and left.I got back in my car and headed off to work, completely forgetting my newspaper. As I drove, I felt a deep gratitude (感激). I was truly blessed to have the physical abilities that allow me to live a normal life. It is a place where artists of all types can sweep away distractions (令人分心的事物) and just create.MacDowell’s operations are funded by foundations, corporations and in dividuals. Writers, composers, photographers, filmmakers and sculptors — both famous and unknown —compete for the 32 free studios at the place. Once accepted, an artist can stay for as little as a couple of weeks, or as long as a couple of months. When they arrive, artists find a kind of isolation (隔绝) hard to find in our world. There’s no phone. No fax. No friends. No fami ly. It’s just a cabin in the snowy woods.Writer Emily Raboteau lives in New York City. She came to MacDowell to work on a novel. She received a desk, chairs, pencil and paper — and ice grippers. The walk from one isolated, one-room studio to another is icy, so colony residents (居住的人) fasten the ice grippers to the bottom of their shoes.Another colony resident, Belfast composer Elaine Agnew, plays a piece called “To a Wild Rose,” written by Edward MacDowell. She says it’s so famous that every pianist in th e world has played the tune. A hundred years ago, Macdowell owned the land where the colony now sits. He liked its isolation and his ability to get work done there. After his death, his wife, Marion, encouraged other artists to come. And for the last century, artists have accepted the invitation, coming to step outside of their daily lives for a short time. Privacy is respected, but cooperation and discussion is common.Screenwriter Kit Carson — who wrote Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and the film adaptation of Sam Shepherd’s play Paris, Texas — has visited MacDowell twice. He says that the interdisciplinary (学科间的) discussion there is valuable.“You sit around at dinner, talking, and then somebody runs off and brings you back some stuff and shows it to you,” he says. “That, I didn’t realize, was part of the magic here, because people are really open to showing their opinions here.”【1】What do the colony residents have in common?A.They find it hard to survive the loneliness.B.They usually stay in the colony for months.C.They are already famous in their own field.D.They are nearly cut off from the outside world.【2】Why does the author mention Elaine Agnew?A.To show the wide range of the residents.B.To introduce the origin of the colony.C.To admire her great musical talent.D.To show respect for MacDowell.【3】Where does the magic of the MacDowell Colony lie according to Kit Carson?A.It has a homely feel.B.It values work-play balance.C.It encourages privacy greatly.D.It has an idea-sharing atmosphere.【4】What would be the best title for the text?A.Wonderland for artists.B.Creativity at work.C.Happy birthday!D.Power of silence.4.George Aldrich, whose official title is chemical specialist, works at NASA’s White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico. He uses his nose to protect astronauts from unpleasant or harmful odors (气味). His near four-decade career has involved smelling objects from technical handbooks to astronauts’ personal things. It’s crucial that all items taken aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are odorless. Since astronauts are allowed to bring personal items aboard, all their objects must be smell-checked before leaving Earth. In a video provided by Science Channel, Aldrich relates on specific occasion when an astronaut wanted to build a ship in a bottle in space. Everything in the ship-building process had to be sniffed — right down to the glue.Aldrich and his team are responsible for making sure that objects are not only odorless but also harmless to astronauts. When the ISS heats up, a process called off-gassing occurs, which means chemicals flow out from certain substances (物质). Objects that would be safe on Earth could give off unpleasant odors or become dangerous when exposed to high temperatures in the ISS’s unique environment.Of course, humans aren’t the only testers or the first to be exposed to potentially dangerous objects. Before Aldrich sticks his nose into a substance, it has been examined by machines. Even though machines can detect unsafe substances, computers cannot tell exactly how things smell to humans. While something could be technically fine, it could be smelly to an astronaut.Aldrich’s nose is not alone there. He is the head of a hard-sniffing team of smell testers. Together they smell each object and rate it on a scale (等级) of 1 to 4. According to NASA, 1 cannot be detected, and 4 is considered not bearable. After the scientists conclude their tests, the scores are averaged. If an item is rated more than 2.4 on the scale, it fails the test and is not allowed on the flight.【1】Which can describe the smell check from Paragraph 2?A.Quite dangerous.B.Extremely strict.C.Rather boring.D.Very complex.【2】What is a threat to astronauts’ safety at the ISS?A.Negative emotions.B.Odor-related disease.C.The off-gassing process.D.Changes in temperature.【3】What should be done before Aldrich and his team start their work?A.Using machines to test objects.B.Having a meeting to make the scale.C.Using computers to examine their noses.D.Listing potentially dangerous substances.【4】What is the text mainly about?A.An unusual smell tester.B.Astronauts’ life at the ISS.C.Strong odors in a spaceship.D.The smell of personal items.二、其他How to Do Man-on-the-Street InterviewsThe man-on-the-street interview is an interview in which a reporter hits the streets with a cameraman to interview people on the sport. 【1】 But with these tips, your first man-on-the-street interview experience can be easy. heliospheric(日球层的)physics for the past half century, passed away peacefully at his home in Chicago on Mar.15.He was94.Hailed(誉为)as a visionary in the field of heliophysics,Parker revolutionized our understanding of the sun and its effects on Earth and other bodies within the solar system.NASA even stated that“the field of heliophysics exists in large part because of Dr.Eugene Parker.In2018,Parker became the first living scientist to witness the launch of a spacecraft that was named in his honor.Parker is best known for his groundbreaking theory on the existence of a phenomenon called “solar wind”,a continuous stream of charged particles(粒子)that flow off the sun.It can become violent, causing space weather that impacts the Earth. When Parker’s research was published in1958, his theory was initially met with skepticism and ridicule by the scientific community. The general view at the time was that the space between planets was an absolute vacuum(真空),and was thus completely empty of any matter. But,there were no errors in his study or his calculations, and the theory was later proven to be correct in1962,when a NASA spacecraft mission to Venus revealed the constant presence of a supersonic wind—exactly as Parker had predicted. That experience likely led to the advice Parker often gave young researchers:“If you do something new or innovative, expect trouble. But think critically about it because if you’re wrong, you want to be the first one to know that.”Parker never co-authored a paper with his students, thus urging them to be independent.Parker was humble, straightforward, and wise. His son Eric said,“My sister Joyce and I didn’t get a real feel for what a‘big dog’our dad was in the field.”They got an even better sense when a month after Parker’s death, they traveled to Lund,Sweden,to accept on his behalf the Crafoord Prize in Astronomy.24.What can we learn from the second paragraph?A.A spacecraft was named in memory of Parker.B.The sun has less effects on Earth than expected.C.Parker deserved credit for his great contributions.D.NASA provided new insights into the lunar effect.25.Why did people view Parker’s theory of“solar wind”skeptically at first?A.It went against the popular opinion at that time.B.Some mistakes were found in his calculations.C.The presence of a supersonic wind was proven by NASA.D.Matter was believed to exist in the space between planets.26.What did Parker suggest young researchers do?A.seek close cooperationB.learn by trial and errorC.avoid high expectationspete against others27.What words can be used to describe Parker according to the passage?A.straightforward and generousB.responsible and accessibleC.intelligent yet meanD.distinguished yet modestCAccording to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actuallydetermines a lot about the type of personality they have.Phipps has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality.Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly58percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up,the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps. The second most common position is the log.Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side,as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these people(the 28percent who sleep this way)often wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep.“The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,”according to Phipps.Yearner(向往型)sleepers are next on the list.About25percent of people sleep in this style—on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves.Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting the best results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead.Perhaps the most peculiar of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy. In conclusion,Phipps has only one more thing to add,“A good night’s sleep sets you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake.”28.What is the main idea of the passage?A.A Good Night's Sleep Sets You Up for the Following DayB.Your Personality Depends a Lot on How You Sleep at NightC.How You Sleep at Night Affects What You Do the Next DayD.Which Sleeping Position Helps You Sleep Comfortably29.Which of the following pictures is the fetal position?30.The underlined word“rigid”is closest in meaning to“________”.A.stubbornB.flexiblefortableD.strange31.Which sleeping position indicates that the sleeper tends to seek perfection?A.The fetal position.B.The log position.C.The freefaller position.D.The yearner position.DSupermarket shelves are filled with plant-based alternatives to cow milk, including soy, nut, and coconut milk. These products are popular with consumers who cannot drink cows’milk for health reasons,as well as with those concerned about animal welfare and environmental sustainability. While the dairy-free options work well with cereal or in coffee, they fail miserably when it comes to makingmilk-based products like cheese or yogurt. However, these shortcomings may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a new company in California, which has figured out how to create animal-free milk in a laboratory!Perumal Gandhi and Ryan Pandya founded the company in2014after becoming increasingly annoyed with the lack of cows’milk-free alternatives, particularly for cheese. For Gandhi, who stopped consuming animal products five years earlier due to environmental and animal welfare concerns, the motivation to create a better alternative stemmed from his love of cheesy pizza.Pandya was spurred into taking action after being forced to eat some“really bad”dairy-free cream cheese on his sandwich. The two MIT biomedical engineering scientists decided to join forces to create a more realistic alternative to dairy-based products. In their university lab,the pair spent nine months first isolating cow DNA then inserting it into yeast(酵母).This genetic modification enabled the yeast to produce the necessary milk proteins. The final step of the process involved mixing the proteins with some plant nutrients and fats. The dairy-free milk not only tastes like the real thing but is also healthier, has a longer shelf life and, most important of all,is Earth friendly.According to the company’s website, when compared to conventional milk production, their process uses65%less energy,creates84%less greenhouse gas emissions and requires91%less land and an amazing98%less water!Best of all, since it contains real milk proteins, the product behaves like the cow-produced version, which means vegetarian consumers will no longer have to deal with soggy cheese on their sandwiches and pizzas. The company plans to bring their creation to market later this year and their first product will most likely be cheese since there are already numerous good cows’milk alternatives available to consumers.32.The underlined word"those"in paragraph1refers to_______.A.alternativesB.productsC.peopleD.reasons33.The company’s founders were motivated to make the new product because of_______.A.their deep concern for the environmentB.the poor taste of dairy-free cheese presently availableC.the over-consumption of the dairy-based productsD.their worry that farm animals were poorly treated34.What can be inferred from paragraph4?A.The dairy-free products cannot be stored for a long time.B.The new products will taste better than dairy-based ones.C.Cow farming causes considerable environmental damage.D.The dairy-free milk will be more expensive than cow’s milk.35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Healthier CheeseB.New Milk Saves PlanetC.Fresher Milk,Better FutureD.Making Milk without Cows第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Text 10
The first thing I did when I woke up in the morning was watch the TV news. I could see that the situation was bad, and they showed a map where the fires were burning. Outside in the garden, I couldn t see the sun, as the sky was full of smoke.
I decided to leave. My son was staying in town and my husband was abroad so it was up to me to decide what to do. I
packed a suitcase of clothes. I took my passport and my bankbook and all the money I had. Out in the garden the sky was getting blacker, and the wind, which had been blowing hard for two days, was getting stronger. I could now hear the sound of the fire only a mile or two away. I got into my car and drove down the road. The smoke was thick. Animals were running across the road, trying to escape the fire. Five miles down the road I came to a long bridge over the river. Once on the other side, I knew I was safe.
