Thank you, President Hennessy, and to the trustees and the faculty, to all of the parents and grandparents, to you, the Stanford graduates. Thank you for letting me share this amazing day with you.
I need to begin by letting everyone in on a little secret. The secret is that Kirby Bump us, Stanford Class of '08, is my goddaughter. So, I was thrilled when President Hennessy asked me to be your Commencement speaker, because this is the first time I've been allowed on campus since Kirby's been here.
You see, Kirby's a very smart girl. She wants people to get to know her on her own terms, she says. Not in terms of who she knows. So, she never wants anyone who's first meeting her to know that I know her and she knows me. So, when she first came to Stanford for new student orientation with her mom, I hear that they arrived and everybody was so welcoming, and somebody came up to Kirby and they said, "Ohmigod, that's Gayle King!" Because a lot of people know Gayle King as my BFF [best friend forever].

1. On the good that came come from failure. It doesn't matter how far you might rise. At some point, you are bound to stumble. If you're constantly pushing yourself higher and higher, the law of averages predicts that you will at some point fall. And when you do, I want you to remember this: There is no such thing as failure. Failure is just life trying to move us in another direction. Now, when you're down there in the hole, it looks like failure. When that moment comes, it's okay to feel bad for a little while. Give yourself time to mourn what you think you may have lost. But then, here's the key: Learn from every mistake, because every experience, particularly your mistakes, are there to teach you and force you into being more who you are."There is no such thing as failure. Failure is just life trying to move us in another direction.

What are You Going to Do?What Are You Going to Do With That?

My friends, I am deeply honored to be here with you today at Stanford University, one of the world's leading institutions of higher learning. It is a privilege to share my thoughts with such a distinguished gathering of students, faculty, staff, and guests.I want to talk to you about the power of believing in yourself. I believe that each and every one of us has the potential to achieve great things in life. But in order to do so, we must first believe in ourselves.I know that this may sound like a simple concept, butit is actually one of the most important things we can doin life. When we believe in ourselves, we are more likelyto take risks, to try new things, and to go after our dreams. We are also more likely to overcome obstacles and challenges.I have seen the power of belief firsthand in my own life. I grew up in a poor family in Mississippi. I had to overcome many obstacles to get to where I am today. But I never gave up on my dreams. I always believed in myself, and I always knew that I could achieve anything I set my mind to.One of the most important things I have learned in life is that we all have the ability to create our own reality. We can choose to believe that we are capable of great things, or we can choose to believe that we are not. The choice is ours.If we choose to believe in ourselves, we will be amazed at what we can achieve. We can accomplish anything we set our minds to. We can overcome any obstacle. We can live the lives we have always dreamed of.So I urge you to believe in yourself. Believe that you are capable of great things. Believe that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. And never give up on yourdreams.Thank you.

But I had a dream of a better life, and I knew that education was the key to achieving my dream.I worked hard in school, and I was fortunate to have teachers who believed in me and encouraged me to reach my full potential. I went on to college, and then I got my start in the entertainment industry.Over the years, I have had the privilege of meeting and talking to people from all walks of life. I have learned that education is not just about getting a degree. It is about learning how to think critically, solve problems, andcommunicate effectively. It is about developing the skills that you need to succeed in life.I have also learned that education is not just for the young. It is for people of all ages. We should never stop learning and growing.I am committed to helping others get the education they need to succeed. I have started a foundation that provides scholarships to students from low-income families. I also support programs that help people learn new skills and get back into the workforce.I believe that education is the key to a better future for all of us.

My name is Oprah Winfrey, and I am truly honored to be here at Stanford University today. I've been asked to speak to you about what I believe is the single most important thing in life: the pursuit of your purpose.I know that for many of you, the idea of finding your purpose can seem daunting. You may be thinking, "How will I know what my purpose is?" or "What if I never find it?" But I want to assure you that it is possible to find your purpose, and it is worth the effort.Your purpose is the reason you are here on this earth. It is the unique contribution that you are meant to make to the world. It is what you are passionate about, what you are good at, and what brings you joy. When you are living in alignment with your purpose, youwill feel a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that you cannot find in any other way. You will be motivated to work hard, to overcome challenges, and to make a difference in the world. So how do you find your purpose? There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but there are some things that you can do to help you on your journey.First, take some time to reflect on what you are passionate about. What do you love to do? What makes you feel alive? Once you have a good understanding of your passions, you can start to explore different ways to use them to make a difference in the world.Second, don't be afraid to experiment. Try different things and see what you enjoy. The more you experiment, the more likely you are to find something that you are passionate about and that you are good at.Third, don't give up. Finding your purpose takes time and effort. There will be times when you feel discouraged, but don't give up. Keep exploring and keep experimenting. Eventually, you will find your purpose.I know that finding your purpose is not always easy. But I believe that it is one of the most important things that you can do in your life. When you live in alignment with your purpose, you will be happier, more successful, and more fulfilled. So I urge you to take the time to find your purpose. It is the best investment that you can make in your future.Example:When I was a young girl, I always loved to talk. I would talk to my friends, my family, and anyone else who would listen. I loved to make people laugh and to make them feel good.As I got older, I realized that my love of talking could be used to make a difference in the world. I could use my voice to speak out against injustice, to inspireothers, and to make the world a better place. So I decided to become a talk show host. I wanted to use my platform to help others and to make a difference in the world. And that is exactly what I have been doing for the past 30 years.I am so grateful that I found my purpose early in life. It has given me a sense of fulfillment and satisfactionthat I cannot find in any other way. I am so passionate about my work, and I am so grateful that I get to do what I love every day.I know that not everyone is as lucky as I am to find their purpose early in life. But I believe that everyone has a purpose, and it is worth the effort to find it.So I urge you to take the time to find your purpose. It is the best investment that you can make in your future.

She said, "Oprah, you can be the president of the United States."I didn't know what the president of the United States was, but I knew that I wanted to be somebody. I wanted to make a difference in the world. So I worked hard in school. I got good grades and I went to college. After college, I got a job as a newsreporter.
And so somebody comes up to Kirby, and they say, "Ohmigod, is that Gayle King?" And Kirby's like, "Uh-huh. She's my mom."And so the person says, "Ohmigod, does it mean, like, you know Oprah Winfrey?"And Kirby says, "Sort of."
”Kirby
”I said, "Sort of? You sort of know me?" Well, I have photographic proof. I have pictures which I can e-mail to you all of Kirby riding horsey with me on all fours. So, I more than sort-of know Kirby Bumpus. And I'm so happy to be here, just happy that I finally, after four years, get to see her room. There's really nowhere else I'd rather be, because I'm so proud of Kirby, who graduates today with two degrees, one in human bio and the other in psychology. Love you, Kirby Cakes! That's how well I know her. I can call her Cakes.
And so proud of her mother and father, who helped her get through this time, and her brother, Will. I really had nothing to do with her graduating from Stanford, but every time anybody's asked me in the past couple of weeks what I was doing, I would say, "I'm getting ready to go to Stanford."
I just love saying "Stanford." Because the truth is, I know I would have never gotten my degree at all, 'cause I didn't go to Stanford. I went to Tennessee State University. But I never would have gotten my diploma at all, because I was supposed to graduate back in 1975, but I was short one credit. And I figured, I'm just going to forget it, 'cause, you know, I'm not going to march with my class. Because by that point, I was already on television. I'd been in television since I was 19 and a sophomore. Granted, I was the only television anchor person that had an 11 o'clock curfew doing the 10 o'clock news.我就是喜欢这样说Stanford(用一种奇怪的语调)。
Seriously, my dad was like, "Well, that news is over at 10:30. Be home by 11."But that didn't matter to me, because I was earning a living.I was on my way. So, I thought, I'm going to let this college thing go and I only had one credit short. But, my father, from that time on and for years after, was always on my case, because I did not graduate. He'd say, "Oprah Gail"—that's my middle name—"I don't know what you're gonna do without that degree." And I'd say, "But, Dad, I have my own television show."
