AThere are a number of special days of the year that are celebrated in different countries. The origins of most of the days are unknown. They were certainly not created by individual people. Other days, however, especially those celebrated in western countries often owe their origins to a particular person. One of the most popular of these, even though it is fairly recent, is Mother's Day. Mothers have always been highly regarded in all cultures. The ancient Romans had a festival known as Hilaria, during which children took presents to the temple of the“Mother of Gods”. The Christian Church adopted this idea and called it Mothering Sunday. However, over the years this custom was gradually forgotten, and almost disappeared by the end of the 19th century.Born in 1864 in Virginia, USA, Anna Jarvis was a school teacher and believed children should show gratitude to their mothers for all their love and care. Encouraged by a friend, she wrote to thousands of important people—politicians, churchmen, doctors, city officials and asked them to support her idea: a special day of the year for thanking mothers. In 1910 the Governor of West Virginia introduced Mother's Day into the state. The date chosen was May 10—the second Sunday in May, which is still observed in America today. This date was chosen because May 10 was the date on which in 1908 Anna Jarvis's mother died. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made May 10 the official date for Mother's Day throughout the United States.Soon there was a Mother's Day International Association and the custom began to be adopted in many countries of the world.Anna Jarvis, a sad and disillusioned woman died in 1948. The custom she had worked so ha rd to establish and which had become almost universal had lost its original purpose. It had been taken over by business. As with Christmas, the giving of presents and the sending of cards had become a multi-million dollar industry.1.The story is about________.A.Mothering Sunday for ChristmasB.The origin of a special day for mothersC.President Wilson and Anna JarvisD.how people celebrate Mother's Day2.Hilaria was a festival in________.A.ancient Rome B.AmericaC.China D.the Christian Church3.Anna Jarvis wanted to________.A.thank her mother for her careB.introduce a celebratio n for mothersC.meet thousands of important peopleD.make her pupils celebrate her on Mother's Day4.May 10 became the date for Mother's Day because______.A.May is in the American springB.it was the second Sunday in May in 1910C.President Wilson liked the dateD.this was the date on which Anna Jarvis's mother died5.Unfortunately, Anna Jarvis was not happy with Mother's Day when she died because________.A.her mother was not there to see itB.she had never been a mother herselfC.people were too interested in making it a businessD.no one gave any presents or cards to their mothersBPumpkin carving is a popular part of modern America's Halloween celebration. In October, pumpkins can be seen everywhere in the country from outdoor steps to dinner tables.People have been making Jack O'Lanterns at Halloween for centuries. The tradition originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack”.According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced(使信服) theDevil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did this, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form.Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that if Jack died, he wouldn't claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark(树皮), so that the Devil couldn't come down until he promised Jack not to bot her him for ten more years.Soon after this, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory(令人讨厌的) figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the tricks Jack had played on him, and keeping his words not to claim Jack's soul, wouldn't allow Jack in to hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a piece of burning coal to light his way. Jack put the piece of coal into a carved-out turnip(芜菁) and has been roaming(徘徊) the earth with the “lantern” ev er since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern”,and then, simply “Jack O'Lantern”.6.In October, pumpkins can be seen everywhere in the country from outdoor steps to dinner tables because ________.A.people like to eat pumpkinsB.American grow a lot of pumpkinsC.pumpkins are beautiful decorationsD.pumpkins are popular th ings used to celebrate Halloween7.We learn from the passage that Jack was a(n) ______ man.A.clever B.lonelyC.greedy D.honest8.How did Jack play the first trick on the Devil?A.He invited the Devil to have a drink with him.B.He convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin.C.He didn't want to pay for his drink.D.He freed the Devil at last.9.After Jack die d, ________.A.God didn't allow him into heaven because he was afraid of being tricked B.the Devil didn't allow him into hell because he didn't want to be tricked any more C.he was not admitted either to heaven or hellD.he preferred to roam the earth with a burning coal in a carved-out turnip lantern参考答案1.

Luxury consumption in China now extends ways beyond well- knowncar, clothing and jewelry brands. For example, the luxury jet market in China is the fastest- growingin the world, even outstripping that of the United States, with a market share of 25 percent. Thistrend appears to continue, with 20 to 30 percent growth expected in China, pared with only 2 to 3percent in the US. But more importantly,China's luxury jet market growth represents a majordevelopment in the private consumption of luxury items.China's high - quality red wine market also provides evidence of the growth in privateconsumption of luxury goods. In 2013, China became the largest market for red wine in the world, even overtaking France, with 1.86 billion bottles consumed in China last year. Over the past fiveyears, China's red wine consumption has grown 136 percent.According to my ongoing consumer research in this area while working at the University ofInternational Business and Economics in Beijing, public consumption of such expensive globalluxury brands such as Prada and Armani is easily explained by the desire to“ gain face ” a display social climbing through material possessions. On the other hand, it is“ self - reward” thatlies behind consumer motivation in this area. Chinese consumers who have experienced rapidfinancial and economic gains appear particularly prone to the need to reward themselves for theirsuccess. But this has little to do with“ gaining face” and impressing others and much more to do w the need for personal contentment. Finally, the growth in private luxury consumption in China is set to continue in part due to thematurity of the Chinese consumer and advancement of Chinese consumer culture generally.

For me,that's true for my relationship with my dad. Some fathers and sons bond over sports, fishing or hunting, but my dad and I bond over Star Trek. We tried a trip to Walt Disney World, but one of my earliest memories wasn't Mickey, but a Klingon battle cruiser(战列巡洋舰)on the screen.Over the years, nearly every setting and situation has become far away for my dad and me. When it's warm at night,we're not driving along some dark streets in Indiana, but walking at slow speed with stars dimly shining. Both of us are thinking of them, without needing to say a word. All these visions of other universes have together created a private universe for my dad and me.Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, once said,"Science fiction is a way of thinking,a way of logic that bypasses(绕过)a lot of nonsense. It allows people to look directly at important subjects.” A lifetime of science fiction has influenced more than just my relationship with my dad,but has also helped me shape my own hopes for the future. I'm now a science writer.Yes,science fiction has made me into a “swot(书呆子)”,but it also has been a source of joy for my family, making me an optimist while enabling me to think critically about the danger of technology.Thank those authors who have shared their visions;the world and my family are better for it. Thank my dad,who is both the best storyteller and the best man I have ever known because he helped me realise the truth of Tennyson's words, "For I dipped into the future, far as human eyes could see, saw the vision of the world, and all the wonders that would be.1. What is the special bond between the author and his father?A. Their similar dreams.B. Their love for each other.C. Their common interest.D. Their hatred for science.2. The Time Spent Together With My FatherB体裁:说明文题材:文化遗迹词数:304难度:中建议用时:7分钟The Great Sphinx of Giza,Egypt,is one of civilisation's greatest mysteries. No one knows for sure exactly when, why or how it was built. It is an enormous sculpture, believed to be the biggest ever created. It measures about 241 feet(73.5 metres)long and 66 feet(20 metres)high. Due to its unknown origin, this massive creation has puzzled the locals, tourists, historians, and archaeologists for centuries. The Sphinx has the body of a lion and the head of a man, which gives it theappearance of a mythical(神话里的)creature. It remains mostly intact today, with the exception of its nose. Many legends surround the missing nose, but a widely accepted explanation is that a former ruler had the nose carved off at some point after its creation. Most archaeologists believe that the Sphinx was built about 4,600 years ago by a pharaoh(A),or a ruler, named Khafre. His pyramid, the giant tomb that holds Khafre's body, is located directly behind the Sphinx. Stone blocks cut off in order to carve the Sphinx's face were used to build the Khafre Valley Temple at about the same time. Some historians also believe the Sphinx's face was modelled after the face of Khafre. For most of its existence, the Sphinx was buried in sand. One story claims that around 1400 BC, the pharaoh Thutmose IV dreamt that the Sphinx ordered him to clear away the sand in return for the crown of Egypt. The sand soon buried the Sphinx again, however. In the 1850s, the sand was partially cleared, and in the 1930s, the Sphinx was completely exposed. Now, however, wind, humidity (湿热), and smog are causing the Sphinx to crumble. Archaeologists must act quickly to preserve this mysterious symbol of Egypt.1. Why is the Sphinx considered to be mysterious?A. It is the biggest sculpture ever made.B. Wind and smog didn't break it down.C. People know little about its origin and construction.D. It was buried in the sand for centuries.2. What does the underlined word "intact" in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Complete.B. Magical.C. Mysterious.D. Confusing.3. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A. The history of Khafre's famous tomb.B. Khafre's great achievement in building the Sphinx.C. Documents recording Khafre's ruling of Egypt.D. Evidence supporting Khafre's building of the Sphinx.4. What does the author call on archaeologists to do in the last paragraph?A. Dig out the Sphinx completely.B. Take action to protect the Sphinx.C. Make the Sphinx the symbol of Egypt.D. Beautify the Sphinx to attract more tourists. Cloning is defined as using the cells of one living human, plant or animal,to create another duplicate(复制的)one. A cloned subject will be the same as its parent. This technology could be useful for laboratory studies and for creating satisfying animals. 1One of the biggest disadvantages of cloning is that the technology is still so uncertain. Dolly the sheep, the first mammalian clone, was born in 1996.While she was initially successful, she died young of a disease not normally seen in sheep of her age.2Losing gene diversity is another disadvantage of cloning. Gene diversity is what keeps an entire species from being wiped out by a singular virus. 3 If gene diversity is lost due to excessive cloning, there are no mutations to allow some of the cloned group to survive a newly introduced disease.Another of the disadvantages of cloning is that there are a lot of moral considerations that would cause most people to protest. 4 Another concern is the treatment of clones. Clones would have the same needs as non-clones of their species. Humane treatment guidelines would still apply.5 For example, imagine what a corrupt(腐败的)officer could do with cloning. There will always be someone looking to use cloning for their own personal use,and many feel that the best way to prevent this is not to pursue cloning at all.The disadvantages of cloning are seen by many to far outweigh any benefit that might be seen. Because of the risk involved in cloning,it is a technology that many experts say may be better left alone,at least until it is better understood.A. This is due to the lack of gene diversity.B. One of these ethical concerns is that cloning is unnatural.C. There is always a risk of cloning technology being abused.D. There are many advantages of cloning, for example, curing certain diseases.E. However, there are several disadvantages of cloning that should be considered.F. It helps to explain why some people naturally are taller, shorter,or more athletic than others.G. It is still unsure whether genetic mutations(突变)might occur when an animal is cloned. Sending an urgent message by a bottle would not typically be considered a sensible strategy.

我曾经带学生背诵著名文学名著Tom Sawyer的开篇,因为我们要表演:“Tom.”There was no answer.“Tom.”Still no answer.“Where’s the boy gone? Tom”She looked under the bed but found only a cat.“If I catch that boy…” she muttered to herself.“Tom!” she shouted.
