Coherence
• The Latin verb cohere means “hold together”. • For coherence writing, the sentences must hold together; that is, the movement from one sentence to the next must be logical and smooth. • Keys to achieve coherence:
英语作文段落四要素

英语作文段落四要素In crafting an English essay, four key elements contribute to its effectiveness: coherence, unity, development, and style.1. Coherence: This refers to the logical and orderly connection of ideas within a paragraph. Coherent paragraphs are easy to follow because each sentence flows logically from the one before it. Transition words and phrases, such as "however," "therefore," and "in addition," help to maintain coherence by signaling shifts in thought or direction. Additionally, repetition of key words or phrases can reinforce the central idea and enhance coherence.2. Unity: Unity means that all sentences in a paragraph are focused on and contribute to a single main idea or topic. Each sentence should support the central theme or argument of the paragraph, and any sentences that do not directly relate to this idea should be omitted or revised. By maintaining unity, the paragraph remains focused andcohesive, allowing the reader to easily grasp the author's intended message.3. Development: Development involves providingsufficient detail, evidence, and explanation to fully explore the main idea of the paragraph. This can beachieved through the use of examples, anecdotes, statistics, quotations, and other forms of evidence to support the author's claims. Additionally, the author should analyzeand interpret the evidence, explaining its significance and relevance to the main idea. Well-developed paragraphs provide depth and complexity to the author's arguments, making them more persuasive and compelling.4. Style: Style encompasses the author's voice, tone, word choice, and sentence structure. A strong writing style engages the reader and conveys the author's personality and perspective. Varied sentence structure, including simple, compound, and complex sentences, adds rhythm and flow tothe writing. Additionally, precise and vivid language enhances clarity and creates a more vivid image in the reader's mind. Finally, maintaining a consistent tonethroughout the paragraph helps to establish the author's attitude and point of view.In summary, effective English essay paragraphs exhibit coherence, unity, development, and style. By ensuring that ideas are logically connected, focused on a central theme, supported by evidence, and expressed with clarity and style, writers can create compelling and persuasive arguments that engage and persuade their readers.。

Transition Signals
1)Transition signals are like traffic signs. they tell your reader when to go forward, tum around, slow down, and stop. In other words, they tell your reader when you are giving a similar idea (similarly, and, in addition), an opposite idea (on the other hand, but, in contrast), an example (for example), a result (therefore, as a result), or a conclusion (in conclusion).
coherence :
1) The Latin verb cohere means"hold together." For coherence in writing, the sentences must hold together.
2)that is,the movement from one sentence to the next must be logical and smooth. There must be no sudden jumps. Each sentence should flow smoothly into the next one.
Consistent Pronouns
1)make sure that you use the same person and number throughout your paragraph. Don't change from you to he or she (change of person) or from he to they (change of number). Notice the changes the writer made for consistency in the following example.
Week14--Unity & Coherence

Unity
Unity means that a paragraph discusses one and only one main idea from beginning to end. For example, if your paragraph is about the advantages of owning a compact car, discuss only that. Do not discuss the disadvantages. Furthermore, discuss only one advantage, such as gas economy, in each paragraph. If you begin to discuss another advantage, start a new paragraph.
You achieve coherence by
• • •
repeating key nouns.
using consistent pronouns. using transition signals.
•
arranging your ideas in some kind of logical order.
1. Repetition of Key Nouns
The easiest way to achieve coherence is to repeat key nouns frequently in your paragraph. Read the model paragraph about gold to see how it goes without coherence. Read the model paragraph 2 about gold to see how it uses this technique to smooth the flow of sentences. The key noun in this paragraph is gold. Circle the word gold and all pronouns that refer to it.

2. What is coherence?
• Coherence means establishing a relationship between the ideas presented in a paragraph. It brings about a rationale (合理的根 据) in the arrangement of the ideas which are introduced either in the chronological order or in the order of importance. Besides, transitions that compare, contrast, illustrate, add or show cause and effect build logical bridges. The ideas, thus expressed in the paragraph, flow smoothly from one to the other in a logical sequence. This helps the reader to understand the paragraph.

Not much is known about the use of sign language among deaf people in the United States before the 1800s. The early 1800s were an important period in the development of American Sign Language. In 1815, a mam named Thomas Gallaudet became interested in teaching deaf people. He travelled to Europe to study ways of communicating with deaf people. He was 27 years old at this time, and he studied a school for deaf students in Paris for several months. In 1817, Gallaudet returned to the United States, and he brought with him Laurent Clerc, a deaf sign language teacher from Paris. Gallaudet started the first school for the deaf, and Clerc became the first sign language teacher in the USA. The school, called the American School for the Deaf, still exists in Hartford, Connecticut. American Sign Language developed from the mixture of signs used by deaf Americans and French Sign Language. Today, it is used by more than 500,000 deaf people in the United States and Canada. About twenty million people in the United States have hearing problems, and about two million of these are deaf.

We use them as a dining room. Naturally, we have a kitchen, a bathroom, and a toilet. I live with my parents. And our house has a little garden; my parents spend their time there to grow vegetables and fruits. First, let's see the order of the ideas: 1. Where the house is 2. Type of the house 3. The location 4. The rooms in the house 5. The fact that he lives with his parents 6. The garden

找一篇英语英语作文Title: Embracing Cultural Diversity: A Journey of Understanding and Unity。
In today's interconnected world, cultural diversity is not just a reality but also a treasure. It enriches our lives, broadens our perspectives, and fosters unity among nations. As we navigate through the complexities of globalization, embracing cultural diversity becomes paramount for building a harmonious and inclusive society.First and foremost, cultural diversity exposes us to different ways of thinking, living, and perceiving the world. When we interact with people from diverse backgrounds, we gain insights into alternative perspectives and approaches to life's challenges. This exposure enhances our creativity, problem-solving skills, and adaptability, as we learn to appreciate the richness of human experiences beyond our own cultural bubble. Moreover, embracing cultural diversity promotes mutual respect and understanding among individuals and communities. By recognizing and valuing the unique traditions, customs, and beliefs of others, we cultivate empathy and tolerance. This, in turn, fosters peaceful coexistence and reduces conflicts fueled by ignorance or prejudice. As we celebrate diversity, we build bridges of empathy and solidarity that transcend boundaries of race, religion, or nationality.Furthermore, cultural diversity stimulates economic growth and innovation. In a globalized marketplace, businesses thrive by leveraging the diverse talents, perspectives, and ideas of a multicultural workforce. By tapping into a pool of diverse skills and experiences, companies gain a competitive edge in creativity, problem-solving, and market expansion. The ability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken form is a crucial skill that is highly valued in academia, the workplace, and everyday life. In English language, this skill is often referred to as "coherence," while in Chinese it is known as "连贯性."Components of Coherence/连贯性。
Coherence/连贯性 is achieved through several key components:Unity/单一性: All parts of the text, including sentences, paragraphs, and sections, share a common theme or focus.Development/发展: Ideas are presented in a logical sequence and are supported by evidence or examples.Transitions/过渡: Words or phrases that connect ideas smoothly, such as conjunctions (e.g., "however," "because") or transitional expressions (e.g., "On the other hand," "In addition").Signposting/指路牌: Signals to the reader what to expect next in the text, such as topic sentences, headings, or summaries.Benefits of Coherence/连贯性。

考研英语作文示例:UnityUnity/Solidarity 团结的意义The cartoon aims at informing us of the significance of unity. Definitely,No one can deny the importance of unity. Unity/solidarity enables people to achieve their objectives more smoothly and rapidly . By uniting, people are more likely to reduce unnecessary conflicts and frictions, take full advantage of each others strength and thus eventually defeat those seemingly invincible hardships and challenges. To further demonstrate the importance of unity, I would like to take the Chinese Communist Party as a case in point: how could she achieve the victory of the Anti-Japanese War if she failed to unite Chinese people of all ethnic groups ?From my perspective, at no time should we underestimate the power of unity. Whats more, we should foster the consciousness of unity and always bear in mind that it is unity, instead of individuals capability, that the achievement of any course depends on. United we stand, divided we fall. The U.S. president John Adams also once said.备选精句:Unity enables us to achieve our objectives more smoothly and realize our dreams more rapidly. Example 3
One of the first problems that students have is learning to use a computer. All students were required to buy a computer before school started. Throughout the first semester we took a special course to teach us to use a computer. My notebook computer has a large memory and can do word processing and spreadsheets. It has a hard drive and a modem. My parents were happy that I had a computer, but they were concerned about the price. Tuition was high, and when they added in the price of computer, it was almost out reach. To offset expenses, I got a part-time job in the school library. Now I am determined to overcome “computer anxiety” and to master my computer by the end of the semester.

Coherence and Unity
Paragraph Unity
Every sentence in a body paragraph should relate directly to the main idea presented in the topic sentence. A paragraph must stick to its announced subject; it must not drift away into another discussion. In other words, a good paragraph has unity. UNITY is a very important characteristic of good paragraph writing. It means that one paragraph is about ONLY ONE main topic. That is, all the sentences – the topic, supporting sentences, the detail sentences, and (sometimes) the concluding sentence – are all telling the reader about ONE main topic. If your paragraph contains a sentence or some sentences that are NOT related to the main topic, then we say that the paragraph "lacks unity," or that the sentence is "off-topic."
