由于臭氧层有效的挡住了来自太阳紫外线的侵袭，才使得人类和地球上各种生命能够存在，繁衍和发展。
我的远房亲戚企鹅住在南极，据说在1985年，南极上空出现臭氧层空洞，打牌1994年，南极上空的臭氧层破坏面积一达2400万平方公里，北半球上空的臭氧层比以往任何时候都薄，欧洲和北美洲上空的臭氧层平均减少百分之十——百分之十五，西伯利亚上空甚至减少百分之三十五。

80年代后期，氟利昂的生产达到了高峰，产量达到了144万吨。
在对氟利昂实行控制之前，全世界向大气中排放的氟利昂已达到了2000万吨。
由于它们在大气中的平均寿命达数百年，所以排放的大部分仍留在大气层中，其中大部分仍然停留在对流层，一小部分升入平流层。
在对流层相当稳定的氟利昂，在上升进入平流层后，在一定的气象条件下，会在强烈紫外线的作用下被分解，分解释放出的氯原子同臭氧会发生连锁反应，不断破坏臭氧分子。
