Aims of the unit
In this unit, we are going to discuss how language teachers can manage the classroom more effectively and efficiently. We will focus on the following: What roles do teachers play in the classroom? How to give effective classroom instruction? What are the different ways for student grouping? How to maintain discipline in the classroom? How to ask effective question? How to treat students’ errors in the classroom?
The most common students grouping: Whole class work Pair work Group work Individual study
Discipline in the language classroom Discipline vs. indiscipline Discipline: in this unit refers to a code of conduct which binds a teacher and a group of students together so that learning can be more effective. Maintaining discipline: Act immediately Stop the class Rearrange the class Change the activity Talk to students after class Create a code of behavior The advice about problems in class: Deal with it quietly Don’t take things personally Don’t use threat
