After years of conditioning, most of us have developed an unshakable faith in railway timetables. Ships may be delayed by storms; air flights may be cancelled because of bad weather; but trains must be on time. Only an exceptionally heavy snow fall might temporarily dislocate railway services. It is all too easy to blame the railway authorities when something does go wrong. The truth is that when mistakes occur, they are more likely to be ours than theirs. After consulting my railway timetable, I noted with satisfaction that there was an express train to Westhaven. It went direct from my local station and the journey lasted a mere hour and seventeen minutes. When I boarded the train, I could not help noticing that a great many local people got on as well. At the time, this did not strike me as odd. I reflected that there must be a great many people besides myself who wished to take advantage of this excellent service. Neither was I surprised when the train stopped at Widley, a tiny station a few miles along the line. Even a mighty express train can be held up by signals. But when the train dawdled at station after station, I began to wonder. It suddenly dawned on me that this express was not roaring down the line at ninety miles an hour, but barely chugging along at thirty. One hour and seventeen minutes passed and we had not even covered half the distance. I asked a passenger if this was the Westhaven Express, but he had not even heard of it. I determined to lodge a complaint as soon as we arrived. Two hours later, I was talking angrily to the station master at Westhaven. When he denied the train's existence, I borrowed his copy of the timetable. There was a note of triumph in my voice when I told him that it was there in black and white. Glancing at it briefly, he told me to look again. A tiny asterisk conducted me to a footnote at the bottom of the page. It said: 'This service has been suspended.'

Even though the road was littered with boulders and pitted with holes, Bruce was not in the least perturbed. Glancing at his map, he informed us that the next village was a mere twenty miles away. It was not that Bruce always underestimated difficulties. He simply had no sense of danger at all. No matter what the conditions were, he believed that a car should be driven as fast as it could possibly go.As we bumped over the dusty track, we swerved to avoid large boulders. The wheels scooped up stones which hammered ominously under the car. We felt sure that sooner or later a stone would rip a hole in our petrol tank or damage the engine. Because of this, we kept looking back, wondering if we were leaving a trail of oil and petrol behind us.What a relief it was when the boulders suddenly disappeared, giving way to a stretch of plain where the only obstacles were clumps of bushes. But there was worse to come. Just ahead of us there was a huge fissure. In response to renewed pleadings, Bruce stopped. Though we all got out to examine the fissure, he remained in the car. We informed him that the fissure extended for fifty yards and was two feet wide and four feet deep. Even this had no effect. Bruce went into a low gear and drove at a terrifying speed, keeping the front wheels astride the crack as he followed its zig-zag course. Before we had time to worry about what might happen, we were back on the plain again. Bruce consulted the map once more and told us that the village was now only fifteen miles away. Our next obstacle was a shallow pool of water about half a mile across. Bruce charged at it, but in the middle, the car came to a grinding halt. A yellow light on the dash- board flashed angrily and Bruce cheerfully announced that there was no oil in the engine!

When he denied the train's existence, Iborrowed his copy of the timetable. There was a note oftriumph in my voice when I told him that it was there inblack and white. Glancing at it briefly, he told me to look again. A tiny asterisk conducted me to a footnote at the bottom of the page. It said: 'This service has been suspended.'【课文翻译】我们已经习惯于相信火车总是准点的。

Before we had time to worry about what might happen,we were back on the plain again. Bruce consulted the map once more and told us that the village was now only fifteen miles away. Our next obstacle was a shallow pool of water abouthalf a mile across. Bruce charged at it, but in the middle, the car came to a grinding halt. A yellow light on the dash- board flashed angrily and Bruce cheerfully announced thatthere was no oil in the engine!【课文翻译】穿越平原的道路高低不平,开车走了不远,路面愈加崎岖。

A yellow light on the dash-board flashed angrily and Bruce cheerfully announced that there was no oil in the engine! The rough road across the plain soon became so bad that we tried to get Bruce to drive back to the village we had come from.rough[rʌf]adj. 使粗糙;粗暴对待;草拟get sb. to do让某人做某事Bruce[brus]n.

so…that…

Even though the road was littered with boulders and pitted with holes, Bruce was not in the least perturbed.litter['lɪtɚ]vt. 之核;使留疤痕in the least一点;丝毫perturb[pɚ'tɝb]vt.

Glancing at his map, he informed us that the next village was a mere twenty miles away. inform[ɪn'fɔrm]vt.

现在分词短语glancing at his map作时间状语。

It was not that Bruce always underestimated difficulties.estimate['ɛstə,met]vi.

He simply had no sense of danger at all.

simply和at all起强调作用。

have no sense of…

No matter what the conditions were, he believed that a car should be driven as fast as it could possibly go.possibly['pɑsəbli]adv.

as fast as it could possibly go的意思是"以最快的速度向前"。

As we bumped over the dusty track, we swerved to avoid large boulders.bump[bʌmp]vi.

The wheels scooped up stones which hammered ominously under the car.scoop[skup]vt.

We felt sure that sooner or later a stone would rip a hole in our petrol tank or damage the engine. rip[rɪp]vt.

Because of this, we kept looking back, wondering if we were leaving a trail of oil and petrol behind us.trail[trel]n.
