They have no idea what to do when in trouble, or feel unable to cope with life when a problem arises.Since parents are failing so badly to help their children in this area, universities must undertake the responsibility to give young people instructions about how to tackle frustrations in life. Then, when students graduate from college, they will possess the capability and confidence in facing frustration in their future life.3. College Students Taking Double-degree ProgramsNowadays, it is quite common for college students to take double-degree programs. If they can take all the classes and pass all the exams for two majors, they will receive two degrees upon graduation.This phenomenon has arisen due to students’intention of using their time in college as efficiently as possible to prepare for their future careers, or at least become more competitive.From my point of view, the decision to pursue a double degree should be made only after weighing all the pros and cons. A double degree may be very useful, but students will most likely acquire such degrees at the expense of all the extra-curricular activities. They may end up as qualified students, but they may not enjoy comprehensive development at the same time.4. Students Rating Their TeachersIn colleges and universities, it is quite common for students to rate or evaluate their teachers. There are various opinions about this practice. Advocates of the idea feel that such an evaluation helps both the teachers and administrators see the effect and influence of teachers on their students. Without such evaluation, they say, teachers would become lazy, and students would have no voice to express their dissatisfaction.On the other side of the issue are those who point out that students are learners, not judges. Very often these evaluations turn in popularity contests, with personal, funny or humorous teachers coming out better than other intelligent and skilled, but less funny teachers.In my opinion, students should have an opportunity to rate their teachers once or twice a semester, but this should not be the only way a college or university evaluates its teachers. A college or university should have a teacher evaluation committee visiting classes, analyzing all aspects of teachers and their classes, surveying students and reporting on their findings. In this way I believe the colleges or universities will remain places of learning rather than places of popularity competitions.5. On Low Carbon LivingLow carbon living is living in such a way as to make the least contribution of carbon emissions to the environment. For example, some people do not own private cars and even avoiding taking taxies if possible. They choose trains rather than planes for long-distance rips, and take buses, ride bikes or even walk to places nearby.Why is there such an interest in low carbon living? In recent years, environmentalists have begun to suspect that carbon emissions from human society are a major contributing factor to the current global warming phenomenon. The rapid increase in carbon emissions over the past few decades has been alarming. Apart from the global warming issue, living a low carbon life can also be good for the health of the local environment.To live a low carbon life myself, I take public transportation whenever and wherever possible. It takes longer to travel, but I have found that I can do an amazing number of things while on the bus of subway, from listening to English on my MP3 player to reading my favorite books. Should Colleges Students Own Credit Cards?In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of credit card use among college students. It is easy for college students to get credit cards in that many banks encourage students to activate cards by providing gifts, counting on the fact that, in the future, more well-educated customers earn more, spend more and are more likely to pay credit card interest.This phenomenon has both advantages and disadvantage. On the positive side, getting a student credit card is a good deal. Credit card companies have very few requirements regarding income level, since they expect that the students will have higher incomes in the future. However, on the negative side, many students are rather immature in handling money, and having a credit card tens to tempt them into spending more than they have.In my opinion, having credit card is very useful. How in the world do we choose from such a variety?There are several things to consider when choosing a club. First, what are our interests? What do we like to do? Second, we should consider our time. Which clubs require a great time commitment? We might also ask ourselves which clubs would be beneficial to our future careers or personal development. Finally, we should also look at the kind of people who tend to be in each kind of club. Do we want to be influenced by these people?Joining at least one club is quite important for us students. We need to get some experience in things we are interested in besides our majors. In addition, clubs can help us to develop social, organizational and other skills. And, of course, clubs are the perfect way to give our mind a breakfrom our studies.9. The Certificate Craze on CampusA certificate craze has recently gripped university students. It seems that everywhere there are classes, conferences, workshops and other opportunities offering a piece of paper upon completion to certify that the paper-holder is qualified to do something. And there seems to be certificates for everything: language proficiency, computer proficiency, accounting, software design, counseling and a host of others.The reasons for this craze are quite simple. Nearly all the students are afraid of how competitive the job market has become and want to boost their chances of landing a good job once they graduate.In my opinion, attending such classes or preparing for the tests may be of some benefit if the students can actually learn something useful.
