Description of a Person
Descriptive Writing • The primary purpose of descriptive writing is to describe a person, place or thing in such a way that a picture is formed in the reader's mind. Capturing an event through descriptive writing involves paying close attention to the details by using all of your five senses.
Description of a person • Thinking if the description is successful in telling the readers what a person looks like. To be specific, the description should answer some of the following question. • 1) What clothes is the person wearing? • 2) How old is he or she? • 3) How tall is the person? • 4) What is his or her figure like, big or small, slim or stocky? • 5) What is his or her complexion? • 6) What are his or her facial features, e.g. features of hair, eyes, nose, lips, teeth? • 7) What makes this person different from others? • 8) Does this person have any features that stand out, such as a scar on the nose?

• 2. Good descriptive writing often makes use of figurative language such as analogies, similes and metaphors to help paint the picture in the reader's mind.
• My Boyfriend • by Sang Hee Park • Let me describe my best friend. His name is John. I met him 7 years ago for the first time. I found out about him from a flyer posted in the street. Are you anxious about him? • First of all, he looks like white cake. His hair is white like fresh cream. His eyes are like two black pearls. His nose is always moistened like dewy flowers. His ears are as big as the rest of his face. Whenever he runs, his hair is glossy and his ears flutter. • I always embrace him. At that time, I have a sensation of going behind the clouds. In addition, his smell is sweet like candy, except when he doesn't take a bath for a long time. However, I always like him anyway.

Characteristics of Description • 1. Good descriptive writing includes many vivid sensory details that paint a picture and appeals to all of the reader's senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste when appropriate.

• 3. Good descriptive writing uses precise language. General adjectives, nouns, and passive verbs do not have a place in good descriptive writing. Use specific adjectives and nouns and strong action verbs to give life to the picture you are painting in the reader's mind.
