You have the ability to decide if you are happy or not. Happiness is a choice.
You can't depend on someone else to make you happy. That is a lesson I learned early on in my marriage. I realized that I couldn't rely on my husband as my source of happiness. I learned that my happiness depended on me and not my husband's actions. I learned that you have to choose to be happy.
You can choose your emotions. True happiness comes from within; it can't be forced by outside forces. So how do you choose happiness? The same way you choose to smile or choose to wear a certain outfit. You choose it because that's what you want to experience in your life.
You want to buy a new pair of shoes so you choose a pair that you like and feel good. You wouldn't buy a pair of shoes that you don't like or that don't fit well, right? So why do we keep choosing
emotions and feelings that don't make us feel good?
Choosing to be happy after you realize your anger has shown up (or even choosing to be calm) can be beneficial. We choose our feelings; no one can do that for us. If we let others get to us, influence our emotions - we are giving them power over us. When others cause us anger or pain, we are giving them our power.
We need to keep our feelings in check and not react automatically to what is thrown at us. We need to think our actions out instead of just reacting to what someone says or does.
Remember that we can always choose happiness. At first it will be difficult to just switch your thoughts and feelings from anger, self-doubt, or fear to joy and happiness. But it is only a thought away. Don't dwell on what happens to you unnecessarily but realize what is causing you to feel that way. Realize that thoughts, feelings and emotions can change. Then move on and choose to be happy.

The young have been described as troublemakers. They make adults feel unsafe to walk the streets and are generally out of control, according to those who took part in a recent survey in Britain.
Yet the same report says thousands take part in community work and carry out charity(慈善) work. The British newspaper The Sunday Sun thought it was time to give youngsters a chance to have their say.
They set up a special survey—Demons(魔鬼) or Darlings? — to ask a series of questions. For example, if they had clashed(冲突) with important figures, how they spend their spare time, and how they feel towards adults.
About 84.2 percent believe adults have become less tolerant(宽容的) towards young people. They describe adults as “judgmental”. More than half of the young participants(参与者) appear to have been treated unfairly.
Meghan Bentley, 16, and 17-year-old Chelsea Laver-Seeley said they had had enough of the public’s understanding of teenagers as troublemakers.
“We are not all like that,” Bentley said. “It’s very stereotypical(有成见的). We don’t all hang around street corners.”
Both Bentley and Laver-Seeley are students at Mount Grace School, Hertfordshire. They help younger students with their studies and go into primary schools and read to children.
Why did teenagers get the reputation(名声) they have? Bentley said she thought the media’s fixation(思维定势) with youths and gang culture was having a bad effect on young people.
“Kids watch a lot of TV and they look up to the people they see there,” she said. “Some think
it’s cool to carry knives. They think that’s what’s right.
“If they knew what was available to them and what they could get involved in, there would be more choice for them,” Bentley said.
She added: “Give us a bit of praise every now and then, to show people the good stuff teenagers are doing. It’s about time we got some recognition for what we do.

If a new idea in America becomes a law, people who suffer from obesity could suffer financially too. The US state of Arizona wants to charge overweight citizens $50 (325 Yuan) annually if they fail to follow their doctors' advice. People with children or who are overweight because they suffer from a medical condition would be exempt(豁免的).
If the idea is approved by Congress, smokers and diabetics who fail to stick to a healthy lifestyle will also have to pay.
Medicaid, the organization which provides healthcare to the poor in the USA, costs the government $339bn (2.2 trillion Yuan) a year. Monica Coury, assistant director at Arizona's Medicaid programme, said that this proposal would ask people to give something back.
She said that Arizona would take a carrot and stick approach to the problem. As well as
penalizing(惩罚) people who go against their doctor's wishes, incentives(奖励)would be offered for following advice, possibly a keep-fit video.
Arizona's senator Kyrsten Sinema has not backed the plans, saying that there isn't a system to decide whether someone is or isn't following medical advice. Other critics claim that people don't need the government to look after them; if they want to be fat and smoke, the 'nanny state'(保姆国家)
shouldn't try to stop them. Wes Benedict of the Libertarian Party said:"If you want to save the state money... cut Medicaid across the board, but don't single out overweight people and smokers."

70. What does “a carrot and stick approach” mean?
A. A kind of healthy diet.
B. A kind of unhealthy diet.
C. A policy of offering a combination of rewards and punishment.
D. A policy of offering a combination of rewards and prizes.
71. The passage mainly tells about ______.
A. Many people are beginning to realize the importance of keeping fit

C. Smokers and diabetics will be charged by the state

Tensions have erupted over some barren rocks in the Pacific that you may never have heard of, but stay tuned—this is a boundary dispute(边界纷争) that could get ugly and some day have far-reaching consequences for China, Japan, Taiwan and the United States.
The islands in dispute are called the Senkaku chain by Japan, the Diaoyu islands by China, and the Diaoyutai by TaiwanAll three claim the islands, which are really just five small islands and three
barren rocks northeast of Taiwan, 200 miles off the Chinese coast.
The latest conflict occurred when a Chinese fishing boat collided with two Japanese naval ships trying to stop it near the islands. The Japanese prevented the Chinese captain from leaving the place
for questioning and the two countries have been exchanging angry protests.
The reason to worry is that nationalists in both China and Taiwan see the islands as unquestionably theirs and think that their government has been weak in claiming this authority.
So far, wiser heads have generally won the argument on each side, but at some point a weakened Chinese leader might try to gain the legal right with the public by pushing the issue and recovering the islands. It would be a dangerous game and would have a disastrous impact on China-Japan relations, but
if successful it would raise the popularity of the Chinese government.
In reality, of course, there is zero chance that the U.S.will honor its treaty(条约) with Japan over a few barren rocks. We're not going to risk a nuclear conflict with China over some islands that may well be China's.But if we don't help, our security relationship with Japan will be at the breaking point.
So which country has a better claim to the islands? My feeling is that it's China, although the answer isn't clear-cut.Chinese navigational records show the islands as Chinese for many centuries, and a 1783 Japanese map shows them as Chinese as well.Japan purported to "discover" the islands only in 1884 and took control of them by force only in 1895 when it also grabbed Taiwan.
The best approach would be for China and Japan to agree to refer the dispute to the International Court of Justice, but realistically that won't happen. And since some believe that the area is rich with oil and gas reserves, the claims from each side have become more insistent.
As Chinese nationalism grows, as China's navy and ability to project power in the ocean gains, we could see some military conflicts over the islands.
Taken from NewYork Times
72.The underlined word "purported" (in Para.5) is closest in meaning to "_____".
A.happened B.claimed C.pretended D.intended
73.The latest conflict referred to in the passage occurred because _____.
A.the Japanese government has bought the Diaoyu Islands from the Liyuans
B.two Japanese naval ships sailed in the Chinese sea around the Diaoyu Islands
C.the Japanese kept the captain of a fishing boat from returning for questioning
D.A fishing boat collided with two Japanese naval ships by design in the Japanese sea
74.Which of the following is the author's personal idea?
A.It is the two Japanese naval ships that are to blame for the conflict.
B.It is the Chinese captain of a fishing boat that is to blame for the conflict.
C.It is the U.S.that will honor its treaty with Japan over a few barren rocks.
D.It is China that has a better claim to the islands because of its navigational records.
75.Why does the author think neither China nor Japan will agree to refer the dispute to the international Court of justice?
A.because the claim from both sides has become more insistent.
B.because Japan has navy and ability to power the Diaoyu Islands.
C.because China is developing so quickly that it will declare a war on Japan.
D.because the U.S.won't be involved in the dispute between China and Japan.

As a high school student, I consider English a very important subject. In order to learn it well, apart from English class, I took an active part in English corner and other after-class English activities, which benefit me a lot.
In the English corner, I meet many friends, who share the same interest with me. Besides, sometimes, some foreigners are glad to join us. By talking with them, my oral English improved a lot. I also find
it useful to keep English diaries. I keep on doing it these years and it is helpful to my English. As a saying goes, practice makes perfect.
