He traveled to many cities in the country, before going on to France, Australia and the Philippines. He took his wife and three daughters with him and went wherever the road took him. It’s easy to feel lonely when you’re on the road. As my mother said repeatedly, “We made lots of new friends on our trip—most of them were mechanics (机械工)”, since we often spent hours in repair shops. But that was better than sitting by the roadside when it was 40 ℃.Getting along sometimes seemed impossible. There were always a lot of arguments, especially among us back—seat passengers about who had to sit in the middle. But even if it was hard, we did learn a lot about forgiveness (原谅).When we were travelling in the Philippines, we drove to Quezon City one day. It should have been a one—hour drive but was nearly three, thanks to bad roads an d worse traffic. “Did you put our suitcases (行李箱) in the car?” my father asked my mother as we arrived. From the back seat, we saw her slowly turn toward my father. “No,” she said. “I thought you did.” That was how a seven—hour car trip turned into a 16—hour car trip, which was mostly spent in silence. In situations like that, we had to learn to let go of our anger because we were stuck in a moving box with the same people for the rest of the journey. Even if I sometimes felt like opening the car door and pushing one of my sisters out, I kept my feelings to myself. This is why road trips were like mobile universities to us. We got our PHDs (博士学位) in how to get along with other people just by travelling in that old car.And if we were somehow given a second chance at life, we would do it all over again. Only this time, I’d put the suitcases in the car myself.29.According to the first paragraph, the writer’s father ________.A.didn’t like his hometown B.enjoyed travelling a lotC.preferred travelling alone D.had never travelled abroad30.During the road trips, ________.A.hot weather made a lot of trouble for the familyB.the writer’s mother was very proud to make friendsC.the family often had to stop to get their car repairedD.they argued about who had to sit in the front31.When the family was travelling in the Philippines, ________.A.they were very surprised at the good traffic conditions on the wayB.the father and mother had a big fight with each otherC.they wasted more time on the road after they forgot to take their suitcasesD.the family had a wonderful time with each other on the road32.In the writer’s opinion, road trips ________.A.are very boring for big families B.are fun only when we travel with others C.help people go to universities D.help people to develop their social skills 33.What does the last sentence of this passage mean?A.The writer has really learned to be more responsible in the future.B.It will waste a lot of time if you forget to carry something during the trips.C.It is common to experience some problems when you travel with someone else.D.The writer thinks a holiday is a chance to understand your family members better.六、完型填空(共20分)(本题20分) Mr. Turner has ten days off, a nd he doesn’t have to go to work. When I was at school I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer, but having decided to be a lawyer, I then had to choose which first degree I should take before starting law school in another city. I’ve always wanted to help people and I figured that taking Human Rights would allow me to learn about how I can make a real difference in the world.VladimirI love maths. I was torn between two possibilities: I could become an engineer and apply maths at a practical level. Or I could become a maths teacher. I needn’t have worried b ecause in the end I didn’t have to choose! I got everything I wanted thanks to my university, which will qualify me to be a high school teacher while gaining a general engineering degree at the same time.OsvaldoOne of the reasons I chose this university was because of the effort that they put into organising the open day. The lecturers and current students provide an enthusiastic overview (概述) of their courses and of life in the city. This was in contrast to other universities I visited, which just let their reputation do the talking. Although I chose not to live on campus (校园), the rooms there seemed comfortable and very reasonably priced.MariaWhen the time came to select the university, I had three possibilities, but I still could not decide. So it was time to schedule campus tours. They all had their advantages, but this place instantly appealed to me. As soon as I arrived, I was struck by the smiles everyone gave me. I was a total outsider, bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town. But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone. Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Dogs bring much happiness to their owners, and even improve human health. Most two year olds keep us busy in life—an important part of living a long and happy life. According to Stanley Coren, Ph. D. of the University of British Columbia, our dogs are smarter than we thought.Dr. Coren reviewed many studies to find out that dogs are as smart as 2 to 2.5 year olds. Forget about one word orders —according to Coren, the smartest dogs can learn up to 250 words. Most dogs understand an average of 165 words. “The upper limit of dogs” ability to learn language is partly based on a study of a Border Collie (博得牧羊犬) named Rico who showed knowledge of 200 spoken words, and ‘fast-track learning’, which scientists believed to be found only in humans and language-learning apes.Dogs are also great at tricking. During play, they have the ability to trick humans and other dogs in order to get treats. “And they are nearly as successful in tricking humans as humans are in tricking dogs, says Coren.Dogs can also count to four or five, which might explain how they know when their toys are missing. Coren explains, “Their astonishing flashes of smartness and creativity are reminders that they may not be Einsteins, but are sure closer to humans than we thought.”Animals can do much to keep us happy, health, and protect us from harm. Stories of dog heroes can be found using a simple Internet search. Pets teach us sense of duty, keep us from loneliness, and can help with treatment of the disabled. Dogs are smarter than we thought —as smart as a two year old.46. How do dogs bring happiness and health to humans according to the author?A.By doing funny tricks. B.By keeping humans busy.C.By serving their owners. D.By playing with their owners.47. What makes Rico special?A.He seldom uses or t word orders. B.He uses words like a 2.5 year old.C.He is Corn’s favorite subject for study.D.He shows a high level of languageability.48. According to the passage, how are dogs similar to humans?A.They can trick each other equally well.B.They can count to very high numbers.C.They have the same level of creativity as Einstein.D.They are always busy like two-year-old humans.49. What does Dr. Coren say about a dog’s counting ability?A.It is as good as an ape’s.B.It is close to human’s.C.It leaves a lot to be studied. D.It helps them keep their toys.50. What’s the main idea of the text?A.Dogs are smarter than humans thought. B.Dogs do well in tricking for food.C.Dogs are people’s faithful friends.D.Dogs can speak human language.I’ve started to hate traveling. When my friends heard me say that, they were all shocked and confused, because I’m an absolute travel fanatic. It’s not that I dislike traveling itself: rather, I dislike the new definition that modern people have given to it, a fundamentally flawed understanding of tourism. What I hate most during every trip is hearing, “This place is perfect forphotos, take a few for me.” It seems our travels ha ve become nothing more than check-ins and photo sessions.Traveling is no longer about admiring scenery, marveling at the magnificent landscapes of our motherland, or experiencing new lifestyles. Instead, I see crowds of people snapping pictures and checking off locations, hardly anyone pausing to genuinely soak in the sights and experiences with their own eyes and hearts. The once poetic journey has transformed into the so-called modern travel trilogy: approach, photograph, leave. The sole purpose of traveling now seems to be posting on social media, showing off to everyone, and immersing oneself in a world constructed solely by one’s own posts. The goal of traveling has shifted to merely visiting check-in spots and completing the task of “checking in”.Travel has changed, and so have many aspects of our lives. We experience too little genuine joy within. I’ve asked my students why they study, and almost all of them answer that it’s to be admitted into a. good university, seek a good job, and earn a lot of m oney. I don’t think these are wrong or even unnecessary aspirations, but where is our inner happiness and peace? When will we be able to travel for the sake of traveling, to learn for the sake of learning, to go shopping for the sake of going shopping and to preserve our authenticity? After all, we are human beings. How many of us are living day-to-day, going through the motions, turning life into a chore, a mere existence? We still have “poetry and distant horizons” to pursue. We must strive for what truly defines us as human, or we risk losing our humanity.51. Which of the following word can best replace the underlined word “fanatic” in paragraph 1?A.Journalist. B.Psychologist. C.Enthusiast. D.Artist.52. What is the author’s main reason for hating trav eling nowadays?A.The inconvenience of modern transportation.B.The increasing cost of traveling.C.The overcrowding of tourist attractions.D.The shift in people’s perception of traveling.53. What is the author’s attitude towards the “modern travel trilogy”?A.Favorable. B.Disapproving. C.Indifferent. D.Ambiguous. 54. What does the author think about the students’ answers regarding the purpose of studying?A.They are completely wrong.B.They are overly materialistic.C.They show a lack of ambition.D.They are reasonable but lack a deeper pursuit.55. What does the author imply in the passage?A.The author regrets becoming a travel fanatic.B.Modern society has lost touch with genuine experiences.C.Traveling is no longer an enjoyable activity.D.The purpose of traveling has shifted to social media.阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

Section I: How Can This Book Help You?Just about everyone is touched in some way by our criminal justice system. You, a relative or a friend may be arrested and charged with a crime. Or perhaps you've been the victim of one. Maybe you're a teacher, social worker or counselor who needs clear answers to pressing questions so you can help others understand how the criminal justice system works. This book is for all of you, and for anyone else who wants to understand a little more about such gripping modern-day dramas as the O.J. Simpson, Menendez brothers and Timothy McVeigh trials. The book uses an easy-to-understand question-and-answer format to explain the criminal justice system, inside and outside the courtroom. When can a police officer make an arrest? Is it a good idea to talk to the police? Who decides whether to charge someone with a crime, and what crime to charge? Is self-representation ever a good idea in criminal cases? Should defendants conceal their guilt from their attorneys? What factors might convince a judge to release a jailed person on low bail—or waive bail altogether? These are among the hundreds of practical questions the book addresses.1. Who Can Benefit From This Book? Many people can benefit from the information in this book:If you are accused of a crime. If you are facing criminal charges, you should become very familiar with the information in this book, even if you have a lawyer. Your case belongs to you, not to your lawyer, and you will want to be savvy enough about what's going on to intelligently participate in important decisions that are likely to affect its outcome. The more you know, the more likely it is that you will receive high quality legal services, because you will be in a position to insist that they be provided to you.Defendants' family members and friends. If someone close to you faces criminal charges, you'll want to know what is happening and how you can be of help. Does it matter whether you are there in the courtroom when your friend or relative is arraigned? What factors should you consider if you are asked to post bail or sign a bail application for someone else? How should you respond if asked for your opinion by your friend or relative on whether he or she should plead guilty or ask for a jury trial? What types of support or counseling can you properly offer a friend or relative throughout his or her criminal case? Knowing the answers to these and many other questions will make you a better helper.Crime victims. Until recent years, crime victims were largely shut out of the criminal justice process. Now victims often play more active roles, for example, by addressing the judge at the time a defendant is sentenced. Thus, if you are a victim, you too will want to understand how the process works and where in the process you can expect to have an impact on how the case is prosecuted.Concerned citizens. Have you ever watched a trial on TV and wanted to know what all the mumbo-jumbo is about? Complained about the costs associated with crime? Been calledfor jury duty? Whatever prompts your interest, the criminal justice system belongs to you. You have a right to know how it works. The information in this book tells you what you never learned in high school civics. 2. Is This Book a Step-by-Step Guide to Self-Representation in Criminal Cases? No. The book is in no way intended as a detailed guide to self-representation. It is, however, intended to empower criminal defendants by helping them understand every phase of thecriminal justice process and what types of defenses and strategies are available to them.Except for those who are charged with very minor offenses, defendants almost always will benefit from the advice and counsel of attorneys knowledgeable about the law and the ins and outs of the court where the case will be heard. The basic reasons why self-representation is usually not advisable in criminal cases include:· In criminal cases, defendants are up against the power and resources of the government. Individual defendants are no match for the police officers and prosecutors who work in the system every day.· The stakes are often h igh in criminal cases. A conviction may entail a stiff fine, imprisonment, loss of employment and other penalties, such as deportation (of a noncitizen) and the loss of the right to vote and possess a firearm.· Judges, prosecutors and jurors are likely to be prejudiced against self-representing defendants. Such defendants are likely to be seen as guilty ''head cases'' who are adding to their sins by trying to disrupt the judicial system.· Laws and court practices, the knowledge of which is required for a successful outcome, often are "hidden" in appellate court rulings and unwritten policies which cannot easily be researched. While the information in the book will no doubt assist those defendants who choose self-representation, the authors assume that those facing criminal charges for which jail or prison is a possibility are represented by an attorney, either privately retained or appointed at government expense. 陪审员10、 appellate court上诉法院11、 retain雇用,付费雇用(例如律师) 本期的问题:1. mumbo-jumbo什么意思呢?2. it is a good idea that造句
it is a good idea that造句It is a good idea that physical exercise should be a part of our daily routine. Regular exercise has numerous benefits for our physical and mental well-being. It helps to improve cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles and bones, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Moreover, exercise boosts mood, reduces stress levels, and improves cognitive function. One way to incorporate exercise into our daily routine is by participating in a sport or engaging in physical activities such as jogging, swimming, or cycling. These activities not only help in maintaining an active lifestyle but also provide opportunities for social interaction and a sense of belonging. For instance, joining a soccer team or a running club allows individuals to meet like-minded individuals, develop new friendships, and experience the thrill of competition.Additionally, incorporating exercise into our daily routine can be done through everyday activities. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking or cycling to work, or doing household chores vigorously can significantly contribute to our overall physical activity levels. These small changes can make a big difference in our fitness levels and overall health.Furthermore, technology has made it easier to exercise at home or in the office. There are numerous fitness apps and online videos that provide workout routines and guidance. These allow individuals to exercise at their convenience and according to their specific goals and preferences. Whether it is yoga, HIIT workouts,or strength training, there are plenty of options available to suit different fitness levels and interests. Moreover, the benefits of exercise extend beyond the individual. Research has shown that employees who engage in regular physical activity are more productive, have better focus and concentration, and take fewer sick leaves. Therefore, companies are increasingly encouraging their employees to exercise by providing on-site gyms or organizing office-wide fitness challenges. This not only improves the overall health of the employees but also contributes to a positive work environment and increased productivity. In addition to physical exercise, it is also a good idea to prioritize mental well-being. In today's fast-paced and stressful world, taking care of our mental health has become more important than ever. One way to do this is by practicing mindfulness and meditation. These techniques help in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, and improving overall mental well-being. By taking a few minutes every day to breathe deeply, clear our minds, and focus on the present moment, we can significantly improve our mental clarity and emotional resilience.Another important aspect of mental well-being is maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It is essential to prioritize leisure activities, hobbies, and spending quality time with friends and family. Engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation not only helps in managing stress but also improves overall life satisfaction. Furthermore, technology has also played a significant role inpromoting mental well-being. Numerous apps and platforms offer guided meditation, stress reduction techniques, and mood-tracking tools. These provide individuals with easy access to mental health resources and support, making it easier for them to take care of their emotional well-being.In conclusion, it is a good idea to prioritize both physical and mental health. Incorporating exercise into our daily routine has numerous benefits, including improved physical fitness, reduced risk of chronic diseases, and better mental well-being. It is important to find activities that we enjoy and can sustain in the long term, whether it is engaging in sports, everyday activities, or utilizing technology for home workouts. Additionally, taking care of our mental well-being through mindfulness, practicing a healthy work-life balance, and utilizing mental health resources can significantly improve our overall quality of life.。

AThe first Europeans came to America in 1492 with Christopher Columbus. Since that time people have come to America from all over the world, from Europe, Africa, and Asia, and they have brought their music with them. This mixing of people and music has created American music.Music is a very important part of our lives. Music is for dancing, drinking, eating, loving and thinking. Some songs remind us of our childhood or youth. Others remind of the people we love. Many important occasions, like weddings and funerals have special music. Every nation has a national song like the American The Star-Spangled Banner. In the US, high schools and colleges have school songs too.Music is a part of the history of America. It expresses the problems and feelings of its people. As the years pass, the music grows and changes.Modern science has also changed music. Inventions like records, radios, movies, electric instruments, tape recorders, and videos have changed the way we play and listen to music. They have helped to make music an important form of international communication.American music, from the earliest folk songs to modern "pop", is known around the world. Music is one of America's most important exports. It brings the people of the world together. Even when people cannot understand the same language, they can share the same music. For its first concert, the theatre refused the usual crowd of people and instead packed the house with plants. Yes, that's correct. All 2,292 seats at the Gran Teatre Liceu were occupied by green plants. The idea was conceived by artist Eugenio Ampudia and was broadcast live on the theatre's website. These lucky ficus trees, palms, and Swiss cheese plants—which were brought in by local nurseries(苗圃)—got the pleasure of hearing Puccini's Crisantemi performed by the UceLi Quartet string musical group.Ampudia hopes that his idea and the work will inspire people to think more deeply about their relationship with nature and the idea of sustainability(可持续性). "We are at the end of an era and that means that we have to change certain patterns," he shares. "We don't live in the same world as 90 days ago, and this means we have to reflect on everything that we do."As plants can respond to different vibrations(振动) caused by music, they certainly weren't a passive audience—even if they weren't able to give applause. Now that the concert is over, each plant will be given to a different frontline healthcare worker who helped guide the country through its battle with the coronavirus. The moving concert is a continuation of the Liceu's mission to create a dialogue between music and the visual arts. Pictures and a video of the performance taken by Ampudia will now become part of La Caixacon contemporary art collection.1.What was the special part of the concert?A.It had only 2,292 seats.B.It made the world fall in horror.C.It welcomed audience with plants to come.D.It gave plants opportunities to enjoy music.2.What does the underlined word "conceived" mean in the second paragraph?A.Hated.B.Enjoyed.C.Put forward.D.Turned down.3.Which statement may Eugenio Ampudia agree with?A.We didn't do very well in dealing with nature.B.The healthcare workers were more important.C.The plants should have the equal rights.D.We did everything in a wrong way.4.In which column(专栏) of a magazine can this text be read?A.Daily Hero.B.Teens' Life.C.New Technology.D.Art Around the World.CI like music. I think maybe most people like it as much as I do. I believe other people would have the same feeling towards music. For me, music can always make me feel happy and relaxed. Sometimes when I feel very depressed, or suffer setbacks, music can do its magic which helps me through the unpleasant mood. Music makes me feel quiet and peaceful. Furthermore, it has the power to revive my spirit. So I can imagine if there's no music in the world, how boring and colourless our world might be.There are so many different styles of music, such as pop, classical, rock, heavy metal and so on. Maybe we all have different tastes and like different styles. Even though music gives us different effects in different conditions, one thing can be ensured for us that music can help us release the pressure when we feel nervous or reduce pressures on our shoulders. And it can depurate(净化) our heart. When we feel happy, we can listen to some music which makes us happier; if we feel sad and frustrated, we can choose the music which gives us power and makes us refreshed. If we are introverted people, we can listen to the music which makes us more outgoing.Above all, I've stated so many effects of music. We have so many beautiful melodies in the world which could make our life more and more pleasant. So I think we should thank the people who create music, who use rhythms to express various feelings and things as we use articles and languages to express our thinking. So nice! They create the great music, while music makes our world even better. I love music forever!1.What is not the reason for the author's love for music?A.Music can always make the author feel happy and relaxed.B.Music helps the author go through the unpleasant mood.C.Music gives the author great imagination.D.Music makes the author feel quiet and peaceful.2.What can be ensured for us about different types of music?A.Everyone has the same taste and likes the same style.B.Music gives us a similar effect in many conditions.C.Music can help us to reduce our pressure.D.Music can sometimes hurt our heart.3.How can we understand the underlined word "introverted" in the second paragraph?A.Depressed.B.Delighted.C.Confused.D.Quiet and shy.4.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.Music can help us to be healthy.B.We can't live without music.C.There are many kinds of music in the world.D.Music makes our life pleasant.DDogs are our best friends. That's especially true after a disaster, such as an earthquake. When buildings fall down, search-and-rescue dogs help find trapped people. Dogs' amazing noses can pick up the smell of survivors. Now scientists have developed an electronic tool that does the same thing. It's taking smell detection(探测) to a whole new level. The new invention is a sort of electronic nose, which can detect extremely low levels of many compounds(化合物) from people's skin. This isn't the first time engineers have developed such an object. Earlier models, however, have been bulky and expensive. They could not detect low levels of target compounds either. The new one is inexpensive and small enough to fit inside hand-held equipment. The electronic nose can detect extremely slight smell of more than one compound at the same time. "Being able to do this, in such a small object, is the significant discovery," says Sotiris E. Pratsinis, Professor of Process Engineering and Materials Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. His team tested it in special spaces. They were like the small spaces where people might be trapped. Chemicals given off by the volunteers built up inside. The electronicequipment detected those compounds at unbelievably low levels. The results were good news for the research team. But they may be not for our four-legged friends, who could soon be out of a job. "Ideally, this technology could replace search-and-rescue dogs," Pratsinis says.Stephen Taylor, an electrical engineer, agrees that the new technology has some benefits over dogs. Still, he thinks it may be too soon to have our trusty friends retire. He suspects, "I foresee that such an object could add to the fine work done by the dogs." Taylor also points out some potential limitations of the new invention. "E-noses are useful, but can be very likely to be affected by unstable readings and interruption," he says.1.Why does the author talk about dogs at the beginning?A.To catch the readers' attention.B.To introduce the topic about e-noses.C.To show what search-and-rescue dogs do.D.To add background information for discussion.2.Which of the following best explains "bulky" underlined in Paragraph 2?plex.B.Fragile.C.Handy.rge.3.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A.What e-noses' working principle is.B.How e-noses are made.C.What differences between dogs and e-noses are.D.How powerful e-noses are.4.What does Stephen Taylor mean?A.Dogs and e-noses could work together.B.Search-and-rescue dogs will retire soon.C.E-noses are more reliable than noses of dogs.D.Dogs are better at finding out trapped people. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

While the information in the book will no doubt assist those defendants who choose self-representation, the authors assume that those facing criminal charges for which jail or prison is a possibility are represented by an attorney, either privately retained or appointed at government expense.

Discussion
In life, there is such a contradiction:on the one hand, the elderly parents need to be taken care of, on the other hand, the children are too busy to take care of their parents. So is it a good idea to send the elderly to a nursing home?
In my opinion, choosing a nursing home for parents is not an escape from responsibility, but rather a way to take better care of them.Living in a nursing home is equivalent to the old people have their own house and having a group of old friends of the same age so that they are not lonely , What is more, there are doctors and nurses for health care,Isn't this also a kind of love and accompany, but also a kind of filial piety? Spend more time with the elderly during holidays, especially major fest -ivals such as the Mid-Autumn festival, the Spring Festival, the Lantern Festival, the old man’s birthday and so on,let the elderly know that they are just being cared in the nursing home, not abandoned.
Always remember that filial piety is done from the heart for the good of the old,not for others to see.As long as you are really good to your parents, don’t be afraid of other people’s words, you had better think it over and combine your own situation to give them a good old age.
I wish all the parents a safe and healthy life!。
