T he Ethiopian wolf is one of the world's most endangered members of the wolf and dog family. Fewer than 500 survive, living in six small highland areas of Ethiopia. Like other wolves, they form groups that protect their homes and raise their young. That is where the similarity to other wolves ends. Most wolf species work together to hunt. Ethiopian wolves split up in the morning, and each wolf heads out on its own in search of small animals.

The wolves seem to have a special love for the African giant mole-rat. This animal lives only in the Bale Mountains. Most mole-rats feed on roots underground, but the giant mole-rat also searches for food aboveground.

Ethiopia has a rapidly growing human population, and land for farming is short. People are moving into the highlands, driving out wolves and other animals. The wolves face other threats, too. Domestic dogs carry rabies (狂犬病) and other diseases. In some years, these diseases have killed more than three quarters of the wolves in the Bale Mountains. Wolves also have been hit by cars and shot by people.

Since 1995, the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme (EWCP) has worked with local people to learn about and protect the wolves. One of its most important projects has been to vaccinate (接种疫苗) wolves and thousands of domestic dogs against rabies. Another project has been to build stoves (炉子) that burn less fuel. Many people who live near the wolves collect firewood for cooking and heating. When using better stoves, the people collect less firewood — and protect the wolves' habitats.

The work is paying off. Wolf populations have recovered from recent disease outbreaks. To make sure the wolves keep doing well, EWCP has trained people to educate local people about the wolf and how to protect it.

Thanks to the hard work of scientists and local people, the Ethiopian wolf and other Ethiopian animals face a brighter future here in Africa.

24. Different from other wolf species, Ethiopian wolves _____.

A. hunt alone

B. share food together

C. raise their babies alone

School systems are trying to find ways to help students who are losing too many days in the classroom because of extreme weather. But one solution (解决方法) is causing anger among some parents. Upset parents in Jefferson County, Ala., say they see no reason for a new requirement that students learn online at home for two “eDays” this school year.

“The eDays have been scheduled in advance for Oct. 9 and March 18 to allow learning to continue, and provide a choice of learning when we have extreme weather or other unexpected events,” according to a school teacher. Parents say the requirement puts a heavy burden (负担) on them to stay home with their children on those days; they are afraid of missing work because of this.

Across the nation, school calendars are often hampered (妨碍) by extreme weather.

Last year in Massachusetts (a state in the northeastern US), a very heavy snowfall required more than two weeks of time off for students. Each school figured out how to catch up on missed work by extending the school year, decreasing vacation time or holidays and even holding classes on Saturdays.

But it isn't just snow that keeps students away from school. Extreme heat caused classes to be canceled at schools in New Jersey and Connecticut last month. Schools in California are discussing ways to avoid that from happening in their state.

Technological development in education by means of e-learning platforms (平台) needs to be further welcomed by school systems, especially if extreme weather and natural disasters continue to become more frequent. We live in a new world of technology. Kids already talk online, text, play video games, surf the Internet, and do things in more creative ways than before. Why don't we let them use technology to make up for the weather?

27. Why are some parents angry at the requirement?

A. It is a heavy burden for kids.

B. It may cause safety problems.

C. They don't find it easy to help their kids.

D. They have no time to be with their kids.

28. What is the purpose of the eDays?

A. To improve parent-child communication.

B. To show the harm of extreme weather.

C. To help students catch up on lessons.

D. To teach students about technology.

29. How does the author support the underlined paragraph?

A. By following the order of space.

B. By following the order of time.

C. By analyzing causes.

D. By giving examples.

30. Which can be the best title for the text?

A. Why is weather so extreme?

B. Are the eDays a good solution?

C. What's wrong with school calendars?

D. Is technology doing harm to children?

第二节概要写作(满分25分)

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

“Stop the world, I want to get off!” This popular expression refers to a feeling of panic, or stress, which makes people want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and become calm again. Stress is one of the most common causes of health problems in modern life. Too much stress results in physical, emotional and mental health problems.

There are numerous physical effects of stress. Stress can affect the heart. It can increase the pulse rate, make the heart miss beats, and can cause high blood pressure. Stress can affect the respiratory(呼吸的) system. It can lead to asthma(哮喘,气喘) and cause a person to breathe too fast, resulting in a loss of important carbon dioxide. Stress can affect the stomach. It can cause stomachaches and problems of digesting food. These are only a few examples of the wide range of illnesses and symptoms resulting from stress.

Emotions are also easily affected by stress. People suffering from stress often feel anxious. They may have panic attacks and feel tired all the time. When people are under stress, they often overreact to little problems. For example, a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may yell at a child for dropping a glass of juice. Stress can make people angry, moody or anxious.

Long-term stress can lead to a variety of serious mental illnesses. Depression, an extreme feeling of sadness and hopelessness, can be the result of continued and increasing stress. Alcoholism and other addictions often develop as a result of overuse of alcohol or drugs to try to relieve stress. If stress is allowed to continue, then one's mental health is put at risk.

It is obvious that stress is a serious problem. It attacks the body. It affects the emotions. Untreated, it may eventually result in mental illness. Stress has a great influence on our health, our feelings and our minds. So, reduce stress: stop the world and rest for a while.

Dear Mary,

I am glad to know that you are coming to China for further study. As you are eager to learn Chinese well within a short time, I would like to offer some suggestions to you.

Firstly, you should have passion to learn Chinese. Besides, watching Chinese movies and listening to Chinese songs can make the learning process much more interesting. As a famous saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” You should keep practicing it as much as possible. Why not find a native speaker as a language partner, and meet him/her on a regular basis?

I do hope you will find these proposals practical.

Best wishes!

Yours,

Li Hua 概要写作(参考范文)

S tress is one of the most common causes of modern people’s physical, emotional, and mental health problems. Initially, many physical organs like heart, respiratory system and stomach can not function well due to numerous stress. Besides, too much stress can cause emotional problems like angry, moody or anxious. Finally, long-term untreated stress also contributes to various mental illnesses and addicted behaviors. Consequently, it is high time to reduce stress to keep us physically, emotionally and mentally healthy. (77 w)

期中英语考试卷及答案

英语期中考试试卷 Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs.
