1.Opinions on the major of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

The major of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering has a strong engineering background. Except for a solid foundation and professional knowledge, Experts engaged in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering must have excellent abilities to cope with the fickle engineering situation and make innovations, just as they do in finding and solving engineering problems.

At the same time, vast is the domain of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, which covers not only shipbuilding industry, but also the booming Ocean Engineering. Taking into consideration the dwindling of oil on land, the Ocean Engineering which has a strong relationship with onshore oil and gas resources exploration will surely achieve rapid development in the coming decades.

2.Academic interest

Compared to the ship manufacturing, I am more interested in Ocean Engineering.

Different with those who spend their whole life doing research on the construction of huge sized structures like the semi-submersible floating platform, tension leg platforms. I would prefer slender structures such as sea pipes, risers, mooring lines. Among these riser in deep water attracts me most. It is known to us, riser plays an important role in the connection of the floating structures and the underwater production system. I think the research on deep water riser will make a breakthrough in the exploitation of deep water gas and oil in the South China Sea. Meanwhile, the application of deepwater risers will directly promote the utilization of oil and gas in the South China Sea.

The fact that riser works in hostile marine environment makes it more vulnerable.

Experience shows that fatigue damage is a major reason accounting for the destruction of the riser structure. For the riser system fatigue design, one of the challenging areas is vortex-induced vibration (VIV) induced fatigue excited by ocean current flow. And it is one of the main sources of fatigue damage for the marine riser design. In addition to the fatigue,VIV could also amplify the effective drag coefficient on the riser.

Thus the generating mechanism of riser VIV and its prevention attract me.

3.Research assumption

I assume that I will engage in research on the riser VIV, maybe responsible for riser system fatigue design. Although VIV could be suppressed by strakes or fairings, the cost associated with the hardware and installation is high. Therefore, it is imperative to understand VIV phenomenon better to avoid overly predicting VIV response, and reduce the unnecessary cost associated with VIV suppression.
