Gulangyu Island

Gulangyu Island，once named Yuansha continent and Yuansha zi,

gained its current name in Ming Dynasty, because the Sea Cave, to

the southwest of the sea, was lapped against by tides, with noise seemingly coming from striking drums. Because of history, the buildings of various styles home and abroad, gathered and persevered well here, has the name of "Gallery of World Architecture ". The small island, also the fertile soil for music, from which there are many famous people. It has got the beautiful name of "The island of music" and "The village of music", for it has the largest number of pianos.

Gulangyu Island

With Xiamen city across the sea, Gulangyu Island, Located in the southwest corner of xiamen Island, is separated only by a Lujiang of 600 meters. It costs 5 minutes to shipped from Xiamen Island to Gulangyu Island. With an area of 1.87 km square and a population of more than 20 thousand, it is governed by Siming District.

As The Xiamen Special Economic Zone takes off, the service and equipment included in the travel to Gulangyu Island have improved. The Xiamen Special Economic Zone has become a comprehensive Cultural Tourism Scenic Area with spotting、holiday、travelling、shopping and thentertainment. On May 8, 2007, Gulangyu Island scenic spots in Xiamen City was ratified as the 5A state-level scenic spots by China National Tourism Administration。

Gulangyu Island, Located in the southwest corner of xiamen Island,

businessmen、missionary and human trader set foot on Gulangyu island to set up residences、build churches、open banks、erect hospitals、open schools、

speculate in building land、 market workers，build “consular corps”，open

“municipal council” and “mixcourt”， and changed Gulangyu Island to

"international settlement " . Some overseas Chinese rich men came

here to build houses and villa，run the business of telephones and water. In

December,1942, Japan occupied Gulangyu Island. Gulangyu Island

didn't end a colonial domination of over 100 years until the win of the Anti-Japanese War.
