What Is the "American Dream"?
• The American Dream is a national ethos of the United States in which freedom includes a promise of the possibility of prosperity and success. • In the definition of the American Dream by James Truslow Adams in 1931, "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth.
• The idea of the American Dream is rooted in the United States Declaration of Independence which proclaims that "all men are created equal" and that they are "endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights" including "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
The original American dream: a new gold rush
The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter‘s Mill (制造厂;工厂 ) in Coloma, California. The first to hear confirmed information of the gold rush were the people in Oregon, the Sandwich Islands Hawaii) and Latin America,

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
我梦想有一天,这个 国家将会奋起,实现 其立国信条的真谛: “我们认为这些真理 不证自明:人人生而 平等。”
Public opinion
• Hanson and Zogby (2010) report on numerous public opinion polls that since the 1980s have explored the meaning of the concept for Americans, and their expectations for its future. In these polls, a majority of Americans consistently reported that for their family, the American Dream is more about spiritual(精神的) happiness than material goods. Majorities state that working hard is the most important element for getting ahead. However, an increasing minority (少数民族) stated that hard work and determination does not guarantee success.
Do you know what American Dream is?
• For many immigrants, the Statue of Liberty was their first view of the United States, signifying new opportunities in life. The statue is an iconic symbol of the American Dream. • 对于许多移民,自由女神 是美国第一种观点,标志 着新生活的机会。这座雕 像是“美国梦”的一个标 志性的符号。
On the pessimistic side, most Americans predict that achieving the Dream with fair means will become increasingly difficult for future generations. They are increasingly pessimistic about the opportunity for the working class to get ahead; on the other hand, they are increasingly optimistic about the opportunities available to poor people and to new immigrants to get ahead in the United States. Furthermore, most support programs make special efforts to help minorities get ahead.
• who were the first to start flocking(群集;簇拥 ) to the state(州 ) in late 1848. All in all, the news of gold brought some 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad.
I Have Dream
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
• The so-called American Dream , is a belief that as long as the United States after a hard struggle will be able to achieve the ideal of a better life, that is, people have to work through their own hard work, courage, creativity and determination to move towards Prosperity, rather than rely on specific social classes and other assistance.
The effects of the Gold Rush
A system of laws and a government was created, leading to the admission of California as a state in 1850.
New methods of transportation developed as steamships came into regular service, and railroads were built. The business of agriculture, California's next major growth field, was started on a wide scale throughout the state.
