A Critic Review of King Kong
Peter Jackson’s new film King Kong was released in 2005. As an exception, it
turns out to be a successful successive of the King Kong of 1933. The Sanskrit
meaning of the word King Kong refers the weapons used by gods in fairy tales.
However, as King Kong has been known to people as a great gorilla since his birth in
1933, few people know its original meaning in Sanskrit.
As a derivative version of the 1933 King Kong, this film is set up on the
background similar to the 1933 version –the Great Depression, whereas Peter has
integrated the original skeleton of the story with new humanistic elements to make the
movie an endurable masterpiece.
The plot of the film begins with Ann, a comic actress who loses her job as her employer goes bankrupt, is lucky enough to be miserably chosen by Carl Denham, a wicked director who encounters with the withdraw of investments from his sponsors, to be the heroine of a great film. At the beginning of the film, Carl deceives everyone that they are heading toward Singapore while the real destination is Skull Islands where they go through a series of ventures. Eventually most of those people survive and return to New York with King Kong, the great gorilla, shipped along. At the end of the movie King Kong escapes and climbs to the top of the Empire Building with his beloved girl—Ann, and is shot to death by American Air force.
By using CGI, Peter Jackson has made the most vivid King Kong in history as another triumph of computer –generated images after Jurassic Park, another thrilling film directed by Spielberg. However, Peter focuses more on the film’s humanism which can be credited to western sympathy. In the film, King Kong has been transformed from a brutal beast to a considerate gentleman, a graceful skater and a humorous warrior. On the contrary, Peter tries to challenge human society by showing the weakness of human’s fragile body and contamination of our soul compared to King Kong’s strength and commitment.
Carl Denham is here to serve as a wicked, ambitious villain. With his dream of making a great film, he betrays his investors, and strands Jack Driscoll, a famous talented playwright, in his ship. But when his film is exposed, he gets depressed. However, Carl is there just to serve the plot; his craftiness and inconstancy also serve as a foil to Jack’s decency and loyalty. In term of Jack, his special personality can also be seen in the film Pianist which enables him to enjoy a long—life fame.
Besides the charm of the figures, what impresses audience most is the hostile
natives, huge brutal dinosaurs and over—sized insects. However the thrilling scene in
this film leaves you no time to contemplate how a civilized tribe who has built great
walls similar to Mayan Pyramids can get on well with a wild gorilla and flocks of
dinosaurs in such a small tropical island.
After all, King Kong is more than just a thriller. Peter Jackson’s deep thought into
humanism, which has been popular since Bush era, has made the comparison between
King Kong, Jack, Carl, and the deceptive man manifest. But in this 3—hour film,
Peter Jackson has offered us nothing to judge the roles. The heated debate over the
