1.How many traditional Chinese festivals and Western festivals do you know?
There are many traditional Chinese festivals and the most important ones include the Lunar New Year, the Lantern Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Day and Qingming Festival. I know quite a lot of Western festivals as well, for example, Christmas, Easter, Halloween and Thanksgiving Day.
2.Can you describe the Lunar New Year (Spring Festival)?
The Lunar New Year is often celebrated in late January or early February. It lasts for fifteen days. It is regarded as the most important traditional festival in China. The Lunar New Year is a festival for family reunions. Therefore, on New Year’s Eve, the whole family gets together and eats dumplings.
3.What do you do during the Lunar New Year (Spring Festival)?
I usually spend the New Year’s Eve at my grandparents’ house. There we eat dumplings and watch TV festival shows together. At midnight, we go out and light fireworks. On the next morning, I wear new clothes and go to visit my relatives. I like it very much because I often receive a lot of red envelope money from them. Many friends of mine said temple fairs are interesting places to go but I’ve never been there before.
4.When is Mid-Autumn Day? How did your family celebrate it last year?
Mid-Autumn Day is on the 15th of the eighth lunar month. It’s a traditional Chinese festival for family reunions. On that day, the moon turns perfectly round. Last year, my family went to my uncl e’s house. We ate moon cakes and admired the bright moon. We also took several photos together. This has been a tradition in my family for more than ten years.
5.When is the Dragon Boat Festival? How did you celebrate it last year?
People often celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in early June. The origin of it is to honor the famous poet Qu Yuan. Last Year, my family made and ate a lot of Zongzi to celebrate the festival. Zongzi is made of sticky rice and it’s very delicious. There was a dragon boat race in my neighborhood. I’ve watched two races and I’ll go there again next year!
6.What is your favorite festival?
I like Christmas the most because during the Christmas season many shops are nicely decorated and I can find lovely goods for presents almost everywhere. In my family, it has been a tradition that we decorate our evergreen tree with small cards, cute little dolls and colorful lights. We also hide our presents to each other under the tree. The happiest moment is of course when we exchange our presents on Christmas Eve. I always get a big surprise from my parents.
Special Occasions
7.How do you celebrate your birthday?
My birthday is on September 13th. I often celebrate it with my friends at home. At my birthday party, I always get a big cake and many presents. The happiest moment is when I open my presents. Sometimes I can’t help but scream with happiness because they’re so surprising. Last year I got a lovely schoolbag with Mickey Mouse on it. I have been using it every day since then.
8.Have you ever attended a wedding? How did the couple celebrate it?
Yes, I have. It was my cousin’s wedding two years ago. It took place in a five-star hotel and it was really fantastic. At first, the couple proposed a toast and the guests congratulated them. Then the dinner began. We had many delicious dishes such as steamed fish. Roast duck and fruit salad. The new couple received a lot of red envelope money and a number of lovely presents from the guests. They looked excited.
9.How do you celebrate if you get a good mark on a final exam?
If I get a good mark in the final exam, my parents will buy me a present and cook a special dinner for me to celebrate. This encourages me to study even harder. Last semester, I ranked tenth in my class, and this semester I ranked in the top three. My parents are proud of improvement.
10.Can you talk about the most recent sports meeting in your school?
Our sports meeting took place two weeks ago. Inspired by the Beijing Olympic Games, it started with delegations from all classes and an opening ceremony with a Kungfu performance by the students. It was really exciting. I participated in the 50-meter dash and I broke our school record which had been in place for five years. The awards ceremony was the highlight of the day. When I was standing on the stage, I waved at my classmates. They all cheered loudly.
11.Did you participate in any contests recently?
Yes, I participated in a math contest held by the National Education Bureau a few months ago, and I won second place. I’ve been interested in math since I was in Grade 1. I find it motivating to solve difficult problems on my own. And I can figure out complicated calculations twice as fast as my classmates. Because of my good performance in the contest, I became the teacher’s assistant in my math class. During our self-study class I often help the teacher grade the homework assignments.
Entertainment
12.Do you like watching TV?
Of course, I love it because television programs provide me with the latest information. I can learn whatever I want by watching TV. For example, from CCTV News I know what’s going on in the world; from the Education Channel learn about geography and history; and from BTV Life I get helpful tips for my daily life.
13.What is your favorite TV program?
My favorite TV program is called National Geographic. I usually watch it on the weekends. It provides plenty of maps, photos and videos of different places around the world. Some of the photos are so fascinating that they make me realize how beautiful our earth is. This program inspires me to care more about our environment.
14.Did you watch any movies recently?
Yes, I watched Transformers in the movie theater near my house last weekend. It was a 3D movie and its visual effects were wonderful. I have played with Transformers toys since I was little, so I found the movie very exciting.
15.Do you like to watch a movie in the movie theater or at home?
It’s hard to say. I know it’s cheap to buy a DVD and watch it at home. But you definitely get better picture and sound quality in the theater. And there you can enjoy the movie without any disturbance by advertisements. On the whole I prefer watching movies in the theater.
16.What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is called Kungfu Panda. I watched it several years ago. It’s a story about a fat panda. He learned Kungfu to fight against his enemies. He succeeded in beating them and bringing peace to his homeland. I like the movie so much because the cartoon characters are funny and the story is interesting. It’s really worth watching.
17.What do you think of violence in movies or TV programs?
On the one hand, violence can make movies and TV program more exciting. People always like to see how the evil character is beaten by the hero. So in order to show the braveness of the hero, bloody scenes are sometimes necessary to emphasize the cruelty of the battle. On the other hand, some products put too much violence into movies. This has a negative influence on children. Violent movies seem to tell children that force is the only way to win. This is a wrong attitude. Children are too young to tell right from wrong. If they watch too much violence, they may imitate it in real life.
18.If a book has been made into a movie, will you read the book or watch the movie first?
I would prefer to read the book first. When a book is made into a movie, the director often puts too many of his own ideas into the movie. It may be a wrong understanding of the author’s original thoughts. This has occurred more often recently because movies have become more commercialized. Some directors even completely changed the books’ contents to meet the tastes of the audiences.
Music
19.Do you like listening to music?
Of course, I like listening to music very much. My favorite type of music is R&B. I feel very relaxed when I listened to it. My mom just bought me a new CD player, so now I can play music as soon as I get back home from school.
20.What kinds of music do you like the most?
I like pop music the most because the beat is catchy and the lyrics reflect my daily life. Pop songs are also easy to learn. Sometimes I sing karaoke at home. My parents say I’m good at imitating the pop stars.
21.What is your favorite song?
My favorite song is called ‘We Are Family’. I first listened to this song half a year ago at a party in my school. Its theme is of being together. Its melody is nice and its lyrics are sweet. Whenever I hear it, I feel love.
22.Who is your favorite singer? Have you ever been to his or her concert before?
I like Michael Jackson the most. As the King of Pop, he created his own style and his albums were always setting the trend. He was talented at dancing as well. His “moonwalk” steps were so unique that people from all over the world imitated him. I planned to watch him in concert in 2009, but unfortunately he passed away. Although I won’t ever have a chance to see him in concert, he’ll always live on in my heart.
23.Some students are crazy for superstars. What do you think of this?
In my opinion, as long as a student pays enough attention to his studies and doesn’t waste too much money on buying CDs or concert tickets, it’s ok for him to be a fan of a superstar. Students’ lives are sometimes rather dull and they need some entertainment to bring excitement into their lives. Being crazy for a superstar can help them forget their burden temporarily and relax.
24.Can music influence people’s moods?
Yes, music can influence our moods. How it works depends on the type of music we listen to. Take myself for example. Soft music helps me relax. Heavy metal music makes me upset. Classical music reminds me of my pleasant memories, and jazz makes me want to dance.
25.What functions does music serve in your life?
Music plays an important role in my life. I like playing the piano. I forget all my troubles when my music is on. It helps me relax and enables me to concentrate better when I study. Also, I enjoy singing.
I often spend hours with my friends singing in a karaoke bar. It’s one of my favorite activities.
Recent Personal Experiences
26.What did you do last weekend?
Last weekend I watched a movie called The Notebook with my mom. The movie was really touching. It was a love story between a poor young man and a beautiful girl from a wealthy family. They went through so many difficulties before finally being together. I couldn’t help shedding tears when I saw the ending. It was a good movie and we both enjoyed it very mush.
27.What did you do last week?
Last week was a busy week for me. I had the mid-term exams for all my subjects including Chinese, English, math and science. The exams lasted for three days. They made me exhausted. After the exams,
I went to visit the museum with all my classmates. It was a good rest for us after several weeks of hard work.
28.Did you make any new friends recently?
Yes, I made a good friend not long ago when I was playing badminton at the gym. His name is Joseph. He has been on our school team for a long time. Two weeks ago I had the chance to play a game against him. After that, Joseph told me how to improve my skills. I learned a lot from him and we became good friends.
29.Did you do anything exciting during the last summer holiday?
Yes, I did quite a lot of exciting things during my last summer holiday. The most unforgettable thing was going to Grace’s concert in Shanghai. I’ve been crazy for Grace for five years and it was my first time seeing her on stage. Grace’s voice sounded fantastic, especially in such a large stadium. I couldn’t help screaming over and over. I hope to see her again soon.
Means of Transport
30.What means of transport do you know?
Well, as I know, there are many means of transport including cars, airplanes, bicycles and ships. Cars and trains are the most common means of transport in China.
31.How do you go to school every day?
I often go to school on foot. It takes me only ten minutes. I find walking to school very convenient and healthy.
32.What do you think of the traffic problems in your city?
In my opinion, the traffic problems in my city have become very serious. A few years ago, it took my dad only ten minutes to drive me to school, but now we need to spend a much longer time because of all the traffic jams. And there are more traffic accidents due to the increase of cars. The government is building more roads, but sometimes this adds to the problem as people just buy more cars.
33.What do you think of riding a bicycle?
There are some disadvantages of riding a bicycle. First, it takes you a long time to get to your destination; second, bicycles are inconvenient when it rains or snows. Moreover, it’s very tiring if your need to ride a long way. There are the reasons why I prefer cars.
34.What do you think of driving a car?
I don't think it’s a good idea to drive a car. There are already too many cars on the road during the rush hour. They cause serious traffic jams in big cities like Beijing. Moreover, cars burn a lot of gas which results in air pollution. To protect the environment, we should take public transportation or ride bicycles more often.
35.How would you solve the traffic problems in your city?
The best way to solve traffic problems is to promote the use of public transportation. If more people
take buses or subways, there will be fewer cars on the streets and traffic conditions will become much better. Riding bicycles instead of driving cars is also a good way to help solve this problem. I think reducing traffic should not only be the goal of our government but also the responsibility of everyone living in the city.。
