徐州三中2018 届高三年级英语午练20

Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age.But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one.In those days,a brush was made from camel's hair. There were no camels nearby.Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.

The brush did not last long.Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged(蓬乱).His father said that the cat must be sick.Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.

The_cat's_lot_was_about_to_improve.That year, one of Benjamin's cousins,Mr.Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin's drawings. When he went home,he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings(版画)by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen.

In 1747,when Benjamin was nine years old,Mr.Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift.He asked Benjamin's parents if he might take the boy back to Philadelphia for a visit.

In the city,Mr.Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape(风景)painting.William Williams,a well-known painter, came to see him work.Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull.Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said,“Those two books were my companions by day,and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books ,they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.

Dad and I loved baseball and hated sleep. One midsummer dawn when I was nine,we drove to the local park with our baseballs, gloves, and Yankees caps.

“If you thought night baseball was a thrill, just wait,”Dad told me.“Morning air carries the ball like you've never seen.”

He was right. Our fastballs charged faster and landed more lightly. The echoes of our catches popped as the sun rose over the dew-sprinkled fields.

The park was all ours for about two hours. Then a young mother pushed her stroller toward us.When she neared,Dad politely leaned over the stroller, waved, and

gave the baby his best smile.

The mother stared at him for a second, and then rushed away.

Dad covered his mouth with his hand and walked to the car.“Let's go,bud,”he said.“I'm not feeling well.”

A month earlier,Bell's palsy(贝尔氏神经麻痹)had struck Dad,paralyzing the right side of his face.It left him slurring words and with a droopy eyelid. He could hardly drink from a cup without spilling onto his shirt. And his smile, which once

eased the pain of playground cuts and burst forth at the mention of Mick Jagger,Woody Allen,or his very own Yankees, was gone.

As I slumped in the car,I began suspecting that our sunrise park visit wasn't about watching daylight lift around us.This was his effort to avoid stares.

It was a solemn drive home.

After that day,Dad spent more time indoors. He left the shopping, driving, and Little League games to Mom.A freelance editor,he turned our dining room into his office and buried himself in manuscripts. He no longer wanted to play catch.

At physical therapy,Dad obeyed the doctor:“Now smile as wide as you can.Now lift your right cheek with your hand. Now try to whist le.”

Only the sound of blowing air came out.My earliest memories were of Dad whistling to Frank Sinatra or Bobby McFerrin. He always whistled. He had taught me to whistle too.

Of the roughly 40,000 Americans suffering from Bell's palsy every year, most recover in several weeks.Other cases take a few months to heal. But after nine weeks of therapy, the doctor confessed she couldn't help Dad.

“I've never seen anything like this,” she told him after his final session. Then she handed him the bill.

Dad coped through humor. He occasionally grabbed erasable markers and drew an evensided wide smile across his face.Other times ,he practiced his Elvis impersonation, joking that his curled lips allowed him to perfect his performance of “Hound Dog”.

By the time I entered fourth grade that September,Dad could blink his right eye and speak clearly again. But his smile still hadn't returned. So I made a secret vow:I would abstain from smiles of any kind.

Nothing about fourth grade made this easy.Classmates were both old enough to laugh about pop culture and young enough to appreciate fart jokes.Kids called me Frowny the Dwarf.(I was three foot ten.)Teachers accompanied me into hallways, asking what was wrong.Breaking_the_promise_I_had_made_myself_was_tempting,but_I_couldn't_let_Dad_not_smile_alone.

When I asked my PE coach,“ What's so great about smiling?”he made me do

pushups while the rest of the class played Wiffle ball. Then he called Dad.

I never learned what they discussed. But when I got off the school bus that afternoon,I saw Dad waiting for me,holding our gloves and ball. For the first time in months,we got in the family car and went to the park for a catch.

“It's been too long,” he said.

Roughly a halfdozen fathers and sons lined the field with gloved arms in the air.Dad couldn't smile, but he beamed, and so did I.Sundown came quickly. The field's white lights glowed, and everyone else left. But Dad and I threw everything from curve balls to folly floaters into the night. We had catching up to do.

In creating A.J.Fikry's ordinary yet extraordinary life, the author Gabrielle Zevin has thrown every cliché(老生常谈)into the mix.The hero,A.J.Fikry,lost his beloved wife Nic in a road accident. The sales of his bookstore have been decreasing. The enthusiastic new sales representative Amelia won't stop annoying him with new books. His rare and very valuable first edition has gone missing. But the unexpected arrival of Maya left in his care brings about a series of events with love and hope to his life.

There are few real surprises in the plot and attentive readers will be able to tell where the story is headed. But that is not the point;the elichés and the predictable plot take nothing away from Zevin's work The Storied Life of A.J.Fikry because it's how she tells the story that first charms the readers, then holds their attention, making them read the whole book in a single sitting and finally give the book a long hug when they are finished. This book is a love letter to the joys of reading.

Each chapter begins with the title of a short story or a book and a note from A.J.Fikry describing what he likes about it,essentially introducing each character by what they read. The characters are so realistic that it's hard not to fall in love with all of them:Maya,“the fantastic bookworm”,Amelia,“the giantess”with questionable taste in fashion,Lambiase, the adorable police chief, and A.J.Fikry,the reluctant hero who hates electronic reading devices that will “send centuries of a lively culture into what will surely be a rapid decline”.

The passage of time race issues and the bureaucratic argument of children's services are all put aside in the telling of this story, not because there's anything to hide or because reality is not allowed to interfere, but because the author chooses to

focus on the important stuff. For example,it focuses on Lambiase who organizes a reading club for policemen at the bookstore. His original intention is to help promote business, but over the years he becomes a genuine booklover, one who tends to always have simple advice for his cynical(愤世嫉俗的)friend,A.J.Fikry.“Bad timing,” Lambiase claims.“I've been a police officer for twenty years now and I'll tell you pretty much every bad thing in life is a result of bad timing, and every good thing is the result of good timing.”

More than anything else, this novel is not only about the selling of them or the reading of them, but how books and stories become part of our lives, how we find ourselves within what we read and how we carry books with us.It is also about the power of unexpected happiness and always believing that something wonderful is just around the corner. The Late Bloomer is the book within a book which brings together A.J.Fikry and Amelia. It reminds them that life doesn't follow a set script, things happen when they are meant to happen, and there is no such thing as “too late”for anything.Life is the big picture.Always look at the big picture.Enjoy it.Don't get too concentrated on the details, because it will all be over before you know it.In the long run nobody, not even you, will remember the ordinary details because they are,in the end, quite irrelevant.

A.J.Fikry's final words of wisdom to teenaged Maya convey the same feelings in literary terms:“We are not quite novels. We are not quite short stories. In the end,we_are_collected_works.We have read enough to know there are no collections where each story is perfect. Some of us hit. Some miss.”

11.The author's attitude towards Zevin's book is

A.Four. B.Five.

2013-2014 南京英语高三 三模 D篇

2014南京三模D In winter Hammerfest is a thirty-hour ride by bus from Oslo, though why anyone would want to go there in winter is a question worth considering. I wanted to see the Northern Lights. Also, I had long harboured a half-formed urge to experience what life was like in such a remote and forbidding place. Sitting at home in England with a glass of whisky and a book of maps, this had seemed an excellent idea. But now as I picked myway through the grey, late-December slush(融雪)of Oslo I was beginning to have my doubts. Things had not started well. I had overslept at the hotel, missing breakfast, and had to leap into my clothes. I couldn't find a cab and had to drag my unreasonably overweighted bag eight blocks through slush to the central bus station. I had had huge difficulty persuading the staff at the Kreditkassen Bank on Karl Johans Gate to cash sufficient traveller's cheques to pay the overcharged 1,200-kroner bus fare-they simply could not be made to grasp that the William McGuire Bryson on my passport and the Bill Bryson on my traveller's cheques were both me-and now here I was arriving at the station two minutes before departure, breathless and steaming from the endless uphill exertion(费力)that is my life, and the girl at the ticket counter was telling me that she had no record of my reservation. "This isn't happening," I said. "I'm still at home in England enjoying Christmas.Pass me a drop more port, will you, darling?" Actually, I said, "There must be some mistake. Please look again." The girl studied the passenger list. "No, Mr Bryson, your name is not here·” But I could see it, even upside-down. "There it is, second from the bottom.” "No," the girl decided, "th at says Bemt Bjornson. That's a Norwegian name·” "It doesn't say Bernt Bjornson. It says Bill Bryson. Look at the loop(圆圈)of the 'y', the two ‘I's. Miss, please." But she wouldn't have it. "If I miss this bus when does the next one go?" "Next week at the same time.” Oh, splendid. "Miss, believe me, it says Bill Bryson." "No, it doesn't." "Miss, look, I've come from England. I'm carrying some medicine that could save a child's life.”She didn't buy this. "I want to see the manager." "He's in Stavanger.” "Sure.”

Even the Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese includes 239 English words. Some people support it while others do not. Generally, I am in favour of the inclusion. As the number of English learners is on the rise, it’s not difficult for them to understand these words in Chinese contexts. Besides, it is, on some occasions, more convenient to use English words. Most people nowadays use “IT” instead of its translation “xinxi jishu.” In our global village, we can see that it’s not uncommon for one language to borrow words from other languages. In English, there are many words borrowed from Latin, French, or even Chinese. In fact, Chinese has never stopped taking words from other languages, say, “ganbu” or “minzhu” from Japanese. So, it’s safe to conclude that it is reasonable to include English which facilitates daily communication. 反对: With English words getting popular in both media and daily life, a Chinese dictionary has included 239 of them, leaving the public divided into two opposing groups: “For” and “Against.” I tend to take the “Against”side for two reasons. Firstly, this inclusion has actually polluted our mother tongue. Sooner or later, many English accents will rise and fall with the four Chinese tones. And, rules don’t tell us how to pronounce such English-turned Chinese words as “wifi” and “Out”in a Chinese way! Secondly, such an inclusion may give rise to prejudices of the educated against those with little knowledge of English. Just for one illustration, while college students take “Bye-bye”for granted when parting from each other, it may unconsciously hurt the feelings of someone who is used to “zaijian.”
