MORE than a third of the waste paper and plastic collected by British supermarkets and businesses for recycling is being sent to China without any knowledge of the environmental or social costs, the British newspaper The Guardian reported on Sunday.
New UK government figures suggest that exports to China are running at 200,000 tonnes of plastic rubbish and 500,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard a year — a huge increase on just three years ago.
Much of the plastic sent to China is packaging, but agents for Chinese companies are now buying up and exporting unwashed bottles, containers and other household waste.
"I would say that Britain is dumping its rubbish in the name of recycling. It is not responsible recycling that is being done," said Martin Baker, of Greenpeace China.
Baker said that there are some good recycling factories, but, on the whole, it is small scale, done in backstreets with little environmental standards. People are burning plastic and sorting it by hand and groundwater gets polluted and it goes back into the rivers.

MANY students are planning field trips as spring draws near. Fourteen-year-old Zhou Liqun is busy digging holes (洞) along rivers. The girl and her "One Piece of Paper Team" are planting trees to improve the environment.
They collect waste paper to sell for trees and have set up websites (网站) to spread the message of connections between humans and nature. "We want to make environmental protection everyone's habit," says the girl. "Even a piece of paper matters."
Eager to join Zhou in such meaningful work? Now you are offered advice on what
to do. Last month, measures for public participation (参与) in environmental protection were published by the State Environmental Protection
Administration (SEPA,国家环保总局). The special measures are expected to change the light rain of the past into a storm of environmental protection.
Last year's Songhua River pollution acted as an alarm (警报) to Chinese people. According to sePA officials, environmental pollution has become serious, and will continue so for the next 15 years.
A recent survey showed that though most Chinese people care about environmental problems, they don't put their concerns into practice. One reason is that they don't know how. So the newly published measures present information about how to report environmental problems and how to join in the battle against pollution. Actually there is much you can do in daily life. TOPIC: Some people believe that human activities have harmed the Earth, while others think they have made the Earth a better place. What is your opinion?
Shen You (Nanjing Foreign Language School): I believe this issue should be looked at from both sides. First of all, obviously, human activities have harmed our environment. If they had not, why would we be facing so many environmental disasters and catastrophes (大灾难) today? Earthquakes, sandstorms, tsunamis (海啸), typhoons (台风), these are all disasters that are occurring more and more often. Our endless extraction (开采) of natural resources, our careless attitude toward environmental protection, these are all factors that led to disasters.
Therefore, we human beings should definitely be aware, feel responsible (有责任的) and even guilty about what we are doing However, it is unwise to think that human activities have only harmed the environment rather than benefited it. If that were true, we would all be living on Mars by now. After all, it is a planet that is not affected by any human activity.
I believe we have done some good to the environment. We have made the environment a suitable planet for the survival of numerous (无数的) animals, insects and plants. And by doing that, we are giving the world hope. However, there is still a lot more we can do. For example, we can lead a low-carbon lifestyle. I think by doing this we will have a better future, and definitely make the world a better place to live in.
