Travel in Europe

Instead of Santorini, Tinos

Santorini has been struggling with overtourism for years, a victim of its own success after the island, and the Greek government, sought to lure tourists back following an 8-year financial crisis Now this idyllic destination has reached a saturation point.

A more authentic Greece — the one that Santorini offered before the crowds — can be found in the Cycladic haven of Tinos. With its own enchanting sunsets and rugged charm, this under-the-radar gem is an alluring alternative.

Instead of Amsterdam, Delft and The Hague

In 2017 Amsterdam was visited by 19 million people, two million more than live in the entire

country. The city has a particular problem with tourists on a tight budget — many arriving via low-cost airlines from Britain, France, Germany and beyond, and staying at Airbnbs, in hostels or in their cars and, spending much of their time partying in the red-light district. There the crowds get so dense that on weekend summer nights rescue workers often can’t get to people who fall sick or faint.

Another two destinations can be easily combined: Delft and, about 10 miles away, The Hague, the seat of Dutch government. Both are ideal for visitors looking for great museums, canals, wild North Sea beaches — and no crowds.

Instead of Barcelona, Valencia

For a less frenetic dose of cosmopolitan Mediterranean charm head 220 miles down the coast to Valencia, Spain’s third-largest city, with 800,000 residents and barely 2 million visitors per year. Founded as a retirement community for Roman soldiers, it has many of the same attributes as Barcelona — both were ancient walled cities — with a sprawling, mazelike center filled with Gothic, Romanesque, Rena issance and Baroque architecture. All styles were combined in Valencia’s Cathedral, built between the 13th and 18th centuries; architectural purists should not miss the

15th-century Silk Exchange, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a stunning reminder of the city’s mercantile importance.

1. What can we learn from Santorini?

B. some people can’t be treated in time.

NASA has shown a design for a 3D-printed habitat that could be home for the first humans visiting the Red Planet. It has a double-shell design, to protect the habitable spaces from the natural expansion and contradiction caused by the extreme temperatures swings on Mars. Inside, its functional areas are spread over four levels, with a spiral staircase allowing humans to move around freely.

On the first level there is a wet lab, and a preparation area for astronauts entering and leaving the building. The second level has a dry lab, as well as a kitchen area. The third level functions as a sleeping area, as well as a sanitation pod and a garden area. The fourth level is an exercise and recreation area.

“Architecture on Earth plays a decisive role in the way we live,” said AI SpaceFactory, the New York-based team behind the design. “On Mars, this role reaches a higher level of importance since architecture is the machine which keeps us alive.”

AI SpaceFactory has been selected as the winner of NASA’s 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge, and awarded the top prize of $500,000. The competition challenged participants to create shelters out of recyclables and materials that could be found on deep-space destinations, like the Moon and Mars.

AI SpaceFactory was praised for the way it automated the building process---completing the building with nearly no human assistance in 30 hours. It was also applauded for its biopolymer basalt composite---a biodegradable (可由生物降解的) and recyclable material developed from natural materials found on Mars. After passing a series of NASA’s tests, this material was found to be stronger than its concrete competitors.

“It’s light, and it’s strong, like an airplane,” said Lex Aker s from the Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology at Bradley University, who was one of the competition judges. “That’s going to be very important for these types of habitats.”

4. What are the first and second paragraphs talking about?

A. The features of this 3D-printed habitat.

B The structure of this 3D-printed habitat.

C. The functions of this 3D-printed habitat.

D. The introduction of this 3D-printed habitat.

5. The underlined word “sanitation pod” in the passage probably means “”.

A. Washroom.

B. Living room.

C. Dining room.

D. Bedroom.

6. Why NASA selected AI SpaceFactory as the winner?

A. It used recyclables.

B. No human assistance.

C. Its material is proper.

D. It passed NASA’s a range of tests.

7. What do you find this 3D-printed habitat?

A. It costs a lot.

B. It will come into reality.

C. It is of significance.

D. It arouses people’s interest.

Honey can be used to measure air pollution, according to a new study from researchers at the University of British Columbia’s Pacific Centre for Isotopic and Geochemical Research (PCIGR).

The research, which was recently published in Nature Sustainability, drew on a survey of urban

beehives (蜂房) around Vancouver that contained small levels of lead, according to The New York Times. Using beehives to measure pollutants could be a cost-effective way to monitor what is in the air.

“The good news is that the chemical co mposition of honey in Vancouver reflects its environment and is extremely clean,” the study’s lead author Kate E. Smith told the school’s website. “We also found that the concentration of elements increased the closer you got to downtown Vancouver, and that the lead largely came from man-made sources.”

The Vancouver area honey showed levels that were below the global average for things like lead, and the University of British Columbia website said someone would “have to consume more than 600 grams, or two c ups, of honey every day to exceed tolerable levels.”

Hives for Humanity, a nonprofit in Vancouver, started the study when it asked a professor at the University of British Columbia to look at honey for pollutants. Through the honey samples alone, Smith said the researchers could find higher concentrations of lead in areas with heavy traffic or industrial activity. Researchers also noted that the lead wasn’t traceable to any local sources, which led them to think that large ships entering Vancouver from Asia could be the source of the pollutants.

“One of the exciting parts of this study is that it bridges science with community interests,” Smith told the school’s website. “Honey sampling can easily be performed by citizen scientists in other urban centers, ev en if they lack other environmental monitoring skills.”

12. Using beehives to measure pollutants could _______.

A. be an efficient method to see what is in the air

B. keep the environment from being polluted

C. monitor what happened to the air

D. cost a large amount of money

13. What can we know from Kate E Smith’s words?

A. Downtown Vancouver is pretty clean.

B. The lead comes from man-made product.

C. The environment of Vancouver is not bad.

D. Human is responsible for the concentration of lead.

14. What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?

A. The problem of lead is easy to settle.

B. Ships from Asia are related to the pollutants.

C. Honey can be used to reveal lead and other pollutants.

D. Heavy traffic and industrial activity produce more lead.

15. Wha t’s the best title of the passage?

A. The Importance of Honey

B. Environmental Monitoring Skills

C. Honey--Measure Lead and Pollution

D. How to Look at Honey for Pollutants

A 13. D 14. C 15. C

根据第三段的““We also found that the concentration of elements increased the clos er you got to downtown Vancouver, and that the lead largely came from man-made sources.””

根据第五段的“Through the honey samples alone, Smith said the researchers could find higher concentrations of lead in areas with heavy traffic or industrial activity. Researchers also noted that the lead wasn’t traceable to any local sources, which led them to think that large ships entering Vancouver from Asia could be the source of the pollutants.”

Honey can be used to measure air pollution,

according to a new study from researchers at the Uni versity of British Columbia’s Pacific Centre for Isotopic and Geochemical Research (PCIGR).”(据英属哥伦比亚大学太平洋同位素和地球化学研究所的研究人员说,蜂蜜可以用来测量空气污染)和第二段的“Using beehives to measure pollutants could be a cost-effective way to monitor what is in the air.”(使用蜂房来测量污染物可能是一种经济有效的监测空气污染指数的方法。)

To Learn More without More Study

A new research on how teenage brains work, aside from its own sake—teen brains are developing madly to build a computing machine—is arousing a new movement to help kids make the most of the brain they've got. But how to make the kids to learn more without having to study more? Here are several tips:

___16___ Sleep enables memory, which is that you remember stuff after you sleep on it. What's more, overall performance, attention, and the ability to concentrate are damaged by lack of sleep. Teenagers need nine to 10 hours of sleep a night for optimum performance.

Start studying a few days in advance of a test. Memories work better if the brain is exposed to information repeatedly. ___17___This is because your brain doesn't have enough time to digest what you have learned.

Body exercise is brain exercise.___18___ Perhaps the reason is that it increases blood flow, or that it reduces stress and anxiety. Exercise also promotes growth of new brain neurons(神经). Twenty minutes or so a day of activity that raises your heart rate will do it.

___19___ Because emotional systems develop fast in teenager brains, and teenagers learn things they're in favor of quickly and well.

Learn now what you want to remember for the rest of your life. Teenage brains are much better at remembering things on a conscious level than the brains of young children or adults. Scientists aren't sure why, but they know that human brains are prepared to notice and remember what's new. ___20___ So whatever the reason is, the teenage years are the time to learn new languages

and acquire other lifelong skills.

A. Learn what you love

B. Get to bed and go to sleep.

C. Squeezing doesn't work well.

D. Teenagers are exposed to lots of new stuff.

E. Studying hard before the exam is also useful.

F. Suitable exercise really improves brain function.

G. Doing morning exercise is helpful for your health.

B 17. C 18. F 19. A 20. D

Perhaps the reason is that it increases blood flow, or that it reduces stress and anxiety(也许原因是它增加了血液流动,或者减轻了压力和焦虑)可知,适当的运动确实能改善大脑功能,选项F符合语境,故选F。

Because emotional systems develop fast in teenager brains, and teenagers learn things they're in favor of quickly and well(因为青少年的情绪系统在他们的大脑中发展得很快,而且青少年能快速而很好地学习他们喜欢的东西)可知,要学习你喜欢的东西,选项A符合语境,故

选A。

句子主语thousands of runners 是复数含义,并且跟谓语动词take on 又是主动关系。故填have taken 。

故填an 。

故填to save 。

故填with 。

故填including 。

先行词为“she holds 11 world records and countless awards”这句话,定语从句中缺主语,所以用关系代词which引导非限制性定语从句。故填which。

With today’s college application fees averaging around $ 80, you can expect to spend hundreds of dollars on college before you are even accepted into a school. One of the easiest ways to save money on college application fees before you begin applying is to narrow down your list of schools. To save money, try to limit the schools to which you apply to about 2- reach schools and 2- safety schools. At some schools, being a relative of a graduate can secure you a free application. If you are applying to a school where one of your parents or grandparents is a former graduate, check to see if you’re qualified for it. Research the preferred method of applying for each school on your list. Some schools offer free online applications, yet charge a fee for paper submissions. This is because online applications save schools the cost of employing a staff member to physically enter the application information. Several states, such as Michigan and North Carolina, take part in College Application Week, where many schools in the participating states cancel their application fee for the week. Be sure to contact the schools to I j which you are applying to see if they participate in College Application Week and when the program takes place in that state. Apply for early admission. If you have already decided on which college is your top choice, consider applying under an Early Action or Early Decision admission program. If you are accepted, you won’t have to submit application fees to other schools. For more information regarding college applications and the fees associated with them, contact your high I school advisor or the admissions department at your school(s) of interest. 21.The passage is mainly written to______. The first is the 173-meter-high Great Pyramid of Giza, the largest of all the pyramids in Egypt. The second is the Great Sphinx of Giza, a sculpture with the body of a lion and the head of a man, which stands 20 meters tall and 73 meters long. The origin of the Great Sphinx of Giza goes back 5,000 years, Although many sphinx sculptures have been found over the years, researchers believe that the Great Sphinx which guards the pyramids in Giza was actually the first one to be made (around 2600-2500B.C.). The head of the Sphinx represents Khafre, the Pharaoh who ruled Egypt at the time. About two thousand years later, around 570 B.C., sand had covered all but the head of the Great Sphinx. The people living in the area had forgotten the history of the statue, so they imagined that the head represented the sun god Ra and began worshiping it. The son of Pharaoh Amenhotep II heard the head speak to him in a dream. The Sphinx’s head made him promise to clear the sand from the statue’s body. The son, Thutmose, kept his word and did what he was told in the dream. He also built walls around the statue to prevent the sand from covering it again. After all of the sand was cleared away, Thutmose made a large stone tablet that told the story of his dream. He placed this tablet between the two front feet of the Sphinx, where it stands to this day. For hundreds of years, the Sphinx attracted people both as a religious monument and as a work of art. But eventually, the desert sand once again covered the Sphinx, leaving only

The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause. The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life. (1)It can be inferred from the passage that the five girls who were kicked off the team were ________. A. very good players on the team B. addicted to alcohol and drugs C. three junior students and two senior students D. scolded by their parents for drinking alcohol (2)What did the girls do to support their coach's decision? A. They didn't fight for Danville High School any more. B. They all gave speeches to apologize in the local press. C. They admitted their mistake in public in the gymnasium.

I was born on the 17th of November 1828, in the village of Nam Ping, which is about four miles southwest of the Portuguese Colony (殖民地) of Macao, and is located on Pedro Island lying west of Macao, from which it is separated by a channel of half a mile wide. As early as 1834, an English lady, Mrs. Gutzlaff, wife of a missionary to China, came to Macao. Supported by the Ladies' Association in London for the promotion of female education in India and the East, she immediately took up the work of starting a girls' school for Chinese girls, which was soon followed by the opening of a boys' school. Mrs. Gutzlaff's comprador(买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted into the school. It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed. Most certainly such a step would have been more suitable for Chinese public opinion, taste, and the wants of the country, than to allow me to attend an English school. Moreover, a Chinese belief is the only avenue in China that leads to political promotion, influence, power and wealth. I can only guess that as foreign communication with China was just beginning to grow, my parents hoped that it might be worthwhile to put one of their sons to learning English. In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic world. I am wondering if that influenced my parents to put me into Mrs. Gutzlaff's School.
