Man Versus Animals[N][1] One day a clever fox began wondering, "Why is man considered the acme of creation[N] and in what way is he superior to animals? Both man and beast have emotions and passions. Both have their own good and bad qualities. Why then this superiority? Let me go to the king lion and seek his advice." Thinking thus, the fox hurried to the lion's den. "How nice to see you after so many days! Come tell me what is it that you want?" said the lion. The fox said in all humility, "Oh, King! Man is growing all-powerful and is claiming sovereignty over the entire creation! I cannot tolerate man's arrogance and his claim of superiority over all animals. In what way are we inferior? Can we not establish our superiority? We must do something about it." The lion nodded its head and said: "True dear, what shall we do?" The lion and the fox discussed the problem for a long time and decided finally to call for a conference of all animals in the forest. They would discuss thoroughly the relative merits and demerits of man versus animals. The lion then said to the fox: "Go and make all arrangements for the conference. Invite all animals, big and small without any exception. But, who will preside over the conference?" The fox replied: "There is a sage in our forest who has been doing penance for a long time. He is a friend of both man and animals. He will certainly have no preference or prejudices. Why not request him to be the Chairman?" "Do so," replied the lion.[2] In a week's time the fox executed the whole plan. A vast area in the forest was cleared to hold the conference. On the appointed day the animals began filing up[N] towards the conference venue. Very soon, all the animals were seated in their respective places. The sage arrived in time and took his presidential seat. The lion and the elephant stood on either side of the sage, while the fox stood in front of the gathering.[3] The fox being the Secretary of the conference welcomed the gathering and said: "I welcome you all and thank you all for attending this conference." Referring to the Agenda of the conference, the fox said: "I am pleased to place before you four major points over which we have to deliberate. You have to think well and come forth with your opinions as these points have a vital bearing on our self-respect.1) Man as well as the other animals are born alike, of the womb of the mother. Then why should animals be called 'janthu'[N] and man as 'manava'[N] They should be addressed alike.2) There is a fantastic notion that man is wise and animals are foolish. We cannot accept this humiliation and baseless stigma.3) It is claimed that man has the most blessed[N] faculty of speech. But what is the reason for pride when[N] man is only abusing this faculty? In what way do we suffer for want of this faculty?[N] Though we are dumb, we are able to procure food, find shelter, rear our children and live happily. So, man cannot be considered as superior to us only because of this rare faculty of which he boasts.4) Finally, they say that we are cruel and that man is kind and compassionate. In fact, we are more kind and considerate than man. So, we have to refute this allegation, as well."[4] Having read out the agenda, the fox went and sat in its place. The lion stepped forward and raising his head, said in a dignified manner: "I totally approve of all the points of the agenda. I cannot consider man superior to us in any way. Let us first of all take up[N] the point of valor and strength. Is there one among men who can excel me in strength and valor? Even though I am the sole monarch of the forest, I do not indulge in any act of injustice and corruption. I don't kill any animal unless I am hungry. Such being the case[N], can man claim to be superior to us?" "Never, never," roared the whole assembly.[5] The lion then resumed its seat beside the sage. The elephant got up and trumpeted its own glory. "In form, stature, and strength, I am far superior to man. He is a pigmy beside me. As for intelligence, I am reputed for my subtle intellect. Since time immemorial, for every important and auspicious function in the temple or in the palace my presence is considered auspicious. In fact pious men offer me fruits and flowers with deep feelings of reverence. How can man call himself superior to us?" The whole assembly roared: "He can't, he can't." The elephant went back to its seat by the side of the sage.[6] Then came forward the dog and saluting one and all in the assembly said aloud: "I have sound reason to claim that the animals are certainly superior to mankind. Take for example, the quality of love, faithfulness and loyalty. Can any man boast of himself being superior to the dog in these qualities? Man himself keeps us and treats us as a member of his family because of these rare qualities. But, what about men? They have no sense of gratitude even. They keep us on cheap food or on the leftover bits at their meal. Man, in his relation to his own master whom he serves,is ungrateful to the core. Sir, I am sure, we animals are far superior in these characteristics to man." Having spoken thus, it went and sat in its place.[7] It was now the turn of the President to give out his decision on the matter under dispute. The sage got up and said: "My dear friends, what the dog has said is true. Man often says one thing and does another. This inconsistency is not to be found in animals". All the animals clapped long with joy. The sage continued: "In the matter of food, sleep and allied habits of livi ng, there is absolutely no difference between man and animals. But, there is one fundamental difference. The animals cannot transform themselves, while man can transform himself through education, company and emulation. The animals cannot even change their food habits." The fox at once got up and questioned, "Oh Master! What you have said is true. But do you think that all men transform themselves?" The sage said: "Why, without doubt, such men who do not, are worse than animals." At once all the animals clapped and cheered the President. The sage continued: "Men have got another virtue, discrimination." The fox said: "It is true that they have discrimination, but what is the use? They put even animals to shame in their bad conduct. Oh, what a pity! Man spends all his time, talents, strength and money to earn his bread, while we animals procure food without any labor." The sage could see that the fox was trying to exceed the limits[N] and make much of their instinctive nature. So, he said: "Oh, dear animals! You must also be told about another important distinction. Man can conquer illusion. He can realize the self or atma and attain immortality. In fact the very word 'man' indicates these attributes." M-means Maya[N];" A-means the Atmic vision[N] and" N-means Nirvana.By getting rid of illusion and attaining Atmic vision, man can become God. Why don't you own and admit your limitations?" The animals asked him: "Oh wise one! Do you mean to say that all men make use of these three attributes?" "No, not all of them," replied the sage. "Then those who do not attain nirvana by conquering illusion and having atmic vision must be treated as our comrades," asserted the animals, in one voice. "Oh, dear ones!" replied the sage, "I have come to this forest only to be your friend and prove myself a true Man."(1,340 words)。

A Long March to Creativity (II)1 I soon realized that this incident was directly relevant to our assigned tasks in China: to investigate the ways of early childhood education (especially in the arts) and, more broadly, to illuminate Chinese attitudes toward creativity. And so before long I began to include this"key-slot" anecdote into my talks to Chinese educators. I would tell audiences about what had happened and seek their reactions. Some of my Chinese colleagues displayed the same attitude as the attendants at the Jinling Hotel. Since adults know how to place the key in the key slot (they would say), since that is the ultimate purpose of approaching the slot, and since the toddler is neither old nor clever enough to realize the desired action on his own, what possible gain is achieved by having the child flail about? He may well get frustrated and angry certainly not a desirable outcome. Why not show him what to do? He will be happy (those around will be happier), he will learn how to accomplish the task sooner, and then he can proceed to more complex activities, like opening the door or asking for the key.2 We listened to such explanations sympathetically. We agreed that sometimes it i s important to show a child what to do, and that we certainly did not want to frustrate Benjamin. But, as I have said, he was rarely frustrated by his fledgling attempts: "delighted" would be a more appropriate word to describe him. We went on to suggest that many Americans held quite different views about such matters.3 First of all, we did not much care whether Benjamin succeeded in inserting the key into the slot. He was having a good time and exploring, two activities that did matter to us. But the critical point was that in the process, we were trying to teach Benjamin something: that one can solve a problem effectively by oneself. Such self-reliance is a principal value of child rearing inmiddle-class America. So long as the child is shown exactly how to do something whether it be placing a key in a key slot, drawing a rooster, or apologizing for a misdeed he is less likely to figure out himself how to accomplish such a task. And, more generally, he is less likely to view life as many Americans do as a series of situations in which one has to learn to think by oneself, to solve problems on one's own, and even to discover new problems for which creative solutions are wanted.4 In retrospect, it became clear to me that this incident was indeed key and ke y in more than one sense. It indicated important differences in the educational and artistic practices in our two countries. Even more to the point, this apparently little episode revealed important issues about education, creativity, and art that have interested thinkers around the world.5 Dating back to the time of the Greeks, as Philip Jackson has pointed out, one can discern two contrasting approaches to educational issues. One dominant approach is the "mimetic" one, in which the teacher (and "the text") are seen as the unquestioned sources of knowledge. Students are expected to memorize information and then, on subsequent occasions, feed back the information that has been presented to or modeled for them. Opposed to this tradition is a"transformative" approach, in which the teacher is more of a coach, attempting to elicit certain qualities in her students. The teacher engages the student actively in the learning process, asking questions and directing attention to new phenomena, in the hope that the student's understanding will be enhanced. One might say that in the "mimetic" tradition, the cultivation of basic skills is primary; whereas in the "transformative" approach, the stimulation of the child's expressive, creative, and knowing powers is most prized.。

新视野大学英语4第三版读写教程第二单元答案(B4U2)

新视野⼤学英语4第三版读写教程第⼆单元答案(B4U2)1. How do you understand the sentence "No amount of rehearsal will help you come up with the right answer" (Para. 2)?Reference:The sentence means that it is very difficult, or even impossible, for a man to give a right answer when a woman asks him how she looks, no matter how hard he thinks about it and how many different answers he tries.2. According to the text, in what way do men and women evaluate their appearance differently?Reference:Men are satisfied with being average-looking, paying little attention to their looks. In contrast, women pay great attention to their body and image, considering their appearance as not good enough even if they are in fact attractive.3. What causes women to be always dissatisfied with their looks?Reference:The interaction of many psychological and societal factors, for example, their childhood experiences with toys, and the influence of the media.4. In what way do the toys girls play with differ from those boys play with?Reference:Girls' toys are proportioned to have extreme measures of the body (e.g. in terms of height, weight and waist size), whereas boys' toys can look weird rather than handsome.5. What does the sentence "You could not imagine him saying to the others, ‘Is this accessory the right shade of violet for this outfit?'" (Para. 6) imply?Reference:It implies that men pay little attention to the details of their appearance.6. Why is the supermodel Cindy Crawford mentioned in Paragraph 7?Reference:Cindy Crawford is mentioned as an example to show that the beauty industry and the media have great influence on women's devotion to physical beauty and the use of beauty products.7. What is the author's attitude toward the claim that women care much about their appearance due to pressure from men?Reference:The author thinks that the claim is not right since men in fact pay little attention to the details of women's appearance.8. Why do women think that men are not qualified to judge whether a woman looks good or not?Reference:Women think so because men do not even care about their own appearance. For instance, a man often does not bother to clean the cream in his hair or ears after shaving.1. What are the factors that make women pay much greater attention to their appearance than do men?Reference:I think there are three main factors accounting for women's greater attention to appearance. The first are cultural traditions. It is common in many cultures that people put high value on beauty when they look at women. The second is the requirement of certain jobs. For example, in China airline companies set certain criteria for appearance (e.g. in terms of height and weight) when they recruit stewards and stewardesses. Finally, the influence of the media is another strong factor which shapes women's pursuit of physical beauty. There are a lot of advertisements of cosmetics and skincare products in various media such as TV, magazines and newspapers. They often havecelebrities as the spokesperson for the advertised products, which makes women have an illusion that they could look as good as those famous stars if they use the products. In short, these three factors exert immense influence on how women value appearance.2. Are there any occasions in life where it is necessary for a person, either a woman or a man, to look good? Why or why not?Reference:Yes. On certain formal occasions, a person, either female or male, has to pay attention to his attire. Sample cases are job interviews, business meetings, weddings, and banquets. This is because to dress properly is an important element of successful completion of these events.No. People do not have to care what others think of them as long as t hey feel comfortable and satisfied with their looks themselves. After all, this is the most important source of happiness to people.3. What do you consider as the most important traits that make a person beautiful?Reference:In my opinion, the important traits of human beauty include two types, one for appearance and one for inner qualities. Features that characterize a beautiful appearance are a good-looking body, proper clothes and accessories, as well as use of makeup that matches the occasion or event one is attending. Inner qualities that make a person beautiful mainly include good manners and positive personality traits such as honesty, bravery or friendliness.4. What do you think of the relationship between wearing makeup and female beauty? In other words, do women have to apply cosmetics in order to look beautiful? Why or why not?Reference:Yes. Women should pay great attention to their appearance and hence need to wear makeup. This is because beauty is, believe it or not, usually an important quality for women to succeed, for example, when they want to look for a job or an ideal husband.No. What really makes a person beautiful is inner beauty rather than physical appearance. A beautiful look can't last long, but inner beauty, for example, intelligence and honesty, may make a person successful and happy throughout his life.5. If you were the head of a cosmetics company, how would you market or promote a new product?I would market a new product by three means. First, I can ask a celebrity, for example a famous movie star or a supermodel, to be the brand spokesperson on TV. This is a common practice in the advertising industry, and I think it is very effective. Second, I will hire people to distribute flyers and give away free samples of the product on the streets, so the product can reach potential customers directly. In addition, I may post advertisements on public transportation vehicles such as buses and subways. In this way, the commercials can be seen by a large number of people.Fill in the blanks with the words given below. Change the form where necessary. Each word can be used only once. You can follow the outline given below.Done with this activity. Time submitted: 2017-03-07 21:53 (Tuesday) Outline:Topic :How do women and men groom themselves?Introduction :Women and men take care of their appearance in very different ways, which are mainly shown in three areas.Body :The variety of beauty tools and products they useThe amount of clothes they haveThe amount of time they spend on grooming themselvesConclusion :Women and men behave differently in how they attend to their routinegrooming chores. My writing:When you get yourself ready to go to school or work in the morning, or attend a party in the evening, you may have to do various preparations. What youconsider as essential to prepare largely depends on whether you are a female or a male. Women and men take care of their appearance in different ways, which are mainly shown in three areas. One difference lies in the variety of beauty products that women and men use. Women have a great variety of tools and skincare products; for example, combs and clips for hair, brushes for powder foundation, and eyeliners for eyebrows, creams for face, to name just a few. Men, however, do not use so many things. They may comb their hair, but they seldom use cosmetics. Another difference involves the amount of clothes women and men have. Females usually have many more clothes than men do. You may well be familiar with movie scenes in which a woman tries on the outfits in her wardrobe one after another and still hesitates about which one to wear. Unlike females, males do not buy themselves piles of clothes as long as they still have something at home. The third difference is that women spend much more time grooming themselves than men do. It can easily take a woman half an hour or even several hours to get a perfect hair style or apply makeup to her face. In contrast, it may just take a man several minutes to tidy himself. All he needs to do is to comb his hair and put on whatever clothes he finds in the drawer. To conclude, women and men behave differently in how they attend to their routine grooming chores. Such distinctions help create the typical images of females and males in human society.Translate the following paragraph into Chinese.Done with this activity. Time submitted: 2017-03-07 21:53 (Tuesday) The originalWilliam Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent (杰出的) dramatist. His plays have been translated into a vast number of languages and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare's early works were mostly comedies and histories, which have the reputation of being among the finestmasterpieces produced in these genres (体裁) even today. Later on, Shakespeare wrote mainly tragedies, some of which, like Hamlet and King Lear, earned him fame in the entire Western literature. The most striking features of Shakespeare are his brilliant use of language and his universal themes. He contributed thousands of words to English, many of which have become embedded in the language. His themes are so universal that they transcend generations to stir the imaginations of readers and audiences worldwide. Shakespeare has influenced and inspired many writers over the centuries. His writings remain highly popular today, and they are constantly studied, performed, and reinterpreted in diverse cultures throughout the world. Shakespeare will continue to have an enormous impact on future playwrights, novelists, poets, actors, and scholars. My translation⼈们普遍认为,威廉?莎⼠⽐亚是最伟⼤的英语作家和世界杰出的戏剧家。

Well, yes. Because ads for nicotine patches and other ways to quit smoking actually do work — and they work even if you don’t buy the product being advertised. That’s the finding of a study to be published by Cornell researchers in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Political Economy in 2011. Because although some people who saw ads did buy the products being advertised, it seems that just seeing the ads convinces other people第3/7页to try to quit, regardless of how they do it. The phenomenon of influencing consumers beyond the advertised method is known as the spillover effect.A 2006 study by the same authors found that consumers see more ads forover-the-counter-stop-smoking products than for those available only by prescription. Over-the-counter-stop-smoking aids are more heavily advertised. So if more products were available over the counter, there would presumably be more advertising, which in turn could lead to a lot more former smokers, regardless of how they stop.15.A) Seeing ads for ways to quit smoking can help people to stop smoking.B) Nicotine patches do not work for those who want to quit smoking.C) People can be convinced to quit smoking.D) Spillover effects cannot be useful.Script: What is the passage mainly about?正确答案: A16.A) Counter effects.B) Authority effects.C) Spillover effects.D) Peer pressure effects.Script: What is the phenomenon of influencing consumers beyond the advertised method known as?正确答案: C17.A) In 2011.B) In 2010.C) In 2007.D) In 2006.Script: When was the earlier research done?正确答案: DPassage ThreeQuestions 18 to 20 are based on the passage you have just heard.Script: U.S. President Barack Obama signed into law Monday bill regulating the nation's tobacco industry. The bill gives the federal government the ability to regulate the production and sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products. Decades after the dangers of tobacco first became known, the strongest anti-smoking legislation in U.S. history has been signed into law by the President. The measure does not criminalize tobacco or limit the availability of tobacco products to adults. But it will have a big impact on the way cigarettes are produced and sold —particularly to young people. President Obama says protecting children is what the bill is all about."Each day, 1,000 young people under the age of 18 become new, regular, daily smokers," he said. "And almost 90 percent of smokers began at or before their 18th birthday." The president says he knows the problem too well."I was one of these teenagers, and so I know how difficult it can be to break this habit when it's been with you for a long time," he said. "And I also know that kids today don't just start smoking for no reason. They're aggressively targeted as customers by the tobacco industry."For the first time, a government agency — the Food and Drug Administration or FDA — will have the authority to regulate tobacco products.Mr. Obama noted that under the new law, the FDA can ban certain substances in cigarettes and restrict the marketing techniques used by tobacco companies.第4/7页"It will curb the ability of tobacco companies to market products to our children by using appealing flavors," he said. "It will force these companies to more clearly and publicly acknowledge the harmful and deadly effects of the products they sell." The President signed the legislation at a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden surrounded by members of Congress and representatives of health advocacy groups —including three children from an organization called "The Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids."18.A) A bill gives the federal government the ability to regulate the production and sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products.B) A bill advocates anti-smoking campaign.C) A bill allows FDA to ban cigarette production and stop the advertisement on smoking.D) A bill forbids the young people to smoke in the public.Script: What did President Obama sign into law?正确答案: A19.A) FDA can now ban smoking.B) FDA has the power to regulate tobacco products.C) FDA can decide on the sales of tobacco.D) FDA can choose the advertisement of cigarette products.Script: What authority does the FDA have after the legislation?正确答案: B20.A) It will force these companies to stop advertising cigarettes.B) It will force these companies to more clearly and publicly acknowledge the harmful and deadly effects.C) It will force these companies to reduce their cigarettes’ production and advertising in public places.D) It will force these companies to warn the public and ask the public to quit smoking. The incidence of stomach cancer has fallen dramatically in the United States and western Europe over the past 60 years but the disease remains a serious problem in much of the rest of the world, where it is a leading cause of cancer death, according to the Mayo Clinic.Throat cancer is a form of cancer that starts in the inner layer of the throat, the 10-inch-long tube that connects the throat to the stomach.Other studies have linked throat cancer in general to drinking and smoking, but Steevens and colleagues wanted to refine the risk of the different types of the tumours.Smoking was associated with an increased risk of the throat cancer. "These are the results when no other aspects of smoking were considered, such as the amount of cigarettes smoked per day and the number of years a person smoked," Steevens said. "When we took into account the smoking duration and frequency, it appeared that the difference in risk between former smokers and current smokers could partly be explained by these other aspects of smoking." Back from the DeadLast year, a group of South African researchers claimed to have brought a frozen rat's heart back to life. Their discovery gave new hope to the cryonics movement, which is trying to find ways to preserve human beings so they can be revived in the future.1 One morning in the year 2070, a man called Duane awakens. He looks up and sees a doctor in a white coat smiling at him. "Why am I in hospital?" he asks.2 "You've been sick," the doctor replies.3 Then Duane notices a badge on the doctor's coat. It reads "Alcor Resuscitation." Suddenly Duane remembers everything. He has come back to life, 70 years after he "died."4 The reason this was possible is because, instead of being buried or cremated when he died, Duane's body was preserved in a "flask" of liquid nitrogen (at 196 degrees Celsius). And there it "waited" until science had developed the technology to revive a frozen human being.5 Suddenly, a woman appears beside the doctor. It is Duane's wife Jeannie, looking more beautiful than ever. For the past 70 years, she has been taking drugs that prevent her body from aging. Duane looks lovingly at her, and then at his own body. That, too, is in perfect condition. The people at the Alcor Life Extension Foundation have not only brought Duane back to life, they have given him back his youth, using the latest computer technology.6 The couple look at each other apprehensively after all, they haven't seen each other for 70 years. "I guess we've got some stuff to talk about, huh?" Duane says to her.7 This scenario is a shortened version of that which is outlined in the Alcor Foundation's publicity material. It claims that for around $125,000 plus storage fees you, too, might be able to experience a miracle similar to Duane's. But, the brochure warns, "This scenario does not prove that cryonics can or will succeed. It may, however, facilitate discussion of that possibility."8 If $125,000 sounds too expensive, there is a cheaper alternative. If you're a little short of cash, Alcor will dispose of your body, and just freeze your head. This is the option that Paul Garfield, a 79-year-old American man, has chosen. When he dies, his head will be cut off and preserved in liquid nitrogen until such time if ever that science has worked out how to revive it.9 Many people would probably find the idea of "waking up" in the future without a body a little disconcerting. But Mr Garfield isn't worried. Such is his confidence in science that he believes it will not only be able to revive his head, but that it will also be able to build him a new body. "They could just take a small piece of tissue which contains your entire DNA, and from that DNA reconstitute the body in the future."10 Mr Garfield seems to hold science in higher regard than most people, including scientists themselves. The orthodox scientific community regards cryonics as an absurd idea one scientist recently likened it to trying to "turn a hamburger back into a cow."11 The process of preserving a body begins by replacing the blood with glycerin or anti-freeze. It is then frozen in ice and moved to a storage facility, where "cryonic suspension" takes place. Thisinvolves placing the body in a huge flask of liquid nitrogen. In theory, the body could remain in this state for hundreds of years without further deterioration.12 But the main problem is that it has so far proved impossible to freeze bodies without causing irreparable damage to the internal organs. When water freezes, it expands, and when this happens in an organ, it causes the cells to rupture.13 At present, the only "living" things that are regularly frozen and then reanimated are embryos and sperm. But these are just tiny parcels of living cells with no organs. Preserving and reviving an entire human body in the same way has so far proved impossible.14 This is why the reported breakthrough by researchers in South Africa, who claim to have revived a frozen rat's heart, has created a new sense of optimism among cryonicists. They hope that they may eventually be able to use a similar technique to bring humans hack to life. Scientists remain skeptical, though the South African team's findings have been rejected by all the scientists who have seen them.15 And what of the psychology of people who want their bodies frozen? What makes them want to "wake up" hundreds of years in the future? Sociologist Jim Lippard believes they are like a cult, seeking a substitute for religion.16 "This type of person seems to be someone who has little or no faith in traditional religion, and who believes in the power of science and rationality to solve problems. They believe that they will be able to live forever through technology."17 Indeed, most of these people seem to regard death as an illness that should be cured, while others equate it with a calamity that one should try to avoid. As one man put it, when asked why he wanted to live forever: "It's like being on a sinking ship, and asking someone why they are interested in lifeboats."18 For people like Paul Garfield, the fact that cryonics may never work is no reason for not trying. "We may be completely off our rockers," he says. "But if it works, it'll be absolutely wonderful. And if it doesn't work it won't be any different than just dying. That'll be the end of it, and you will have lost nothing.。

国际交流英语视听说B4U2Listening 1Tour Guide: OK, everyone, here’s our next exhibit. Do you see the body of the little bird in that bottle? That is a dusky seaside sparrow. It was an old male that died on June 16, 1987. It’s kind of sad because he was the very last dusky seaside sparrow in the world. They’re now extinct. Yes, you have a question?Male: Do you know why they became extinct?Tour Guide: Basically, they lost their habitat. See, the dusky seaside sparrow lived only in one place—on Merritt Island in Florida. The island had a lot of mosquitoes and wetlands. The people on Merritt Island used chemicals to kill the mosquitoes.Tour Guide: Those chemicals were also very harmful to the sparrows, and many died. In addition, the people on Merritt Island tried to control and exploit the wetlands. As they altered them, the wetlands were no longer a good habitat for the sparrows. The birds died one by one until there weren’t any left.Female: So, if people were to blame, can’t we ma ke sure something like that never happens again?Tour Guide: We’re trying. The situation with the dusky seaside sparrow makes one thing very clear. We need to protect endangered animals. However, it’s a better strategy to protect the animals andtheir habi tats, too. After all, if an animal’s habitat is destroyed, the animal will likely become extinct.Tour Guide: We’re trying. The situation with the dusky seaside sparrow makes one thing very clear. We need to protect endangered animals. However, it’s a bet ter strategy to protect the animals andtheir habitats, too. After all, if an animal’s habitat is destroyed, the animal will likely become extinct. That’s why the Endangered Species Act, which was passed in the United States in 1973, protects both endangered animals and their habitats. For example, the steelhead trout lives in rivers and streams on the west coast of the United States—the Columbia River in Washington state for instance. Recently, both the fish and the river came under the protection of the Endangered Species Act.Male: But how can we protect large areas such as rivers and forests? No one—not even the government—can afford to buy or control all the land that endangered species live on.Tour Guide: Good point. In fact, that’s what makes the En dangered Species Act difficult to fully enforce. There’s an ongoing conflict between some landowners and the government. Take the case of the gray wolf, for instance. At one time, the wolves were common all over North America, but by the 1930s they were nearly all killed. Then in 1973, the wolves came under the protection of the Endangered Species Act, along with huge areas of land—in Wyoming and Idaho, for example. This angered ranchers. They think they should have the right to shoot wolves that threaten their sheep and cows.Tour Guide: So, landowners may understand the need for the protection of endangered species, but it’s understandable that they might also feel that the Endangered Species Act violates their rights. Yes?Female: Is the law working? I mean, what is the status of endangered species today in the United States?Tour Guide: Unfortunately, the situation of threatened and endangered animals is worse now than in 1973, even with the Endangered Species Act in place. Reports on topics such as habitat loss, deforestation, and overfishing show that the situation for many species is far worse now than it was in 1973. Let me be more specific. Right now over 1,300 species in the United States are listed as endangered or threatened.Tour Guide: And, it’s important to keep in mind that not many species are ever taken off the list. Since 1973, in fact, only around 39 species have been removed from the Endangered Species list. But that number doesn’t indicate the complete story. What’s significant about that number is that only 14 species were removed because they had actually recovered. Nine species became extinct, and the others were removed from the list after scientists found evidence that listing the species had been a mistake in the first place. Meanwhile, another 300 species may soon be added to the list, including a plant, the Las Vegas buckwheat, and an insect, the Miami blue butterfly. So, you see, even with the Endangered Species Act in place, we’re not making as much progress as we would like. Any more questions? OK, let’s move on to the next exhibit. This way, please.导游:好的,各位,这是我们的下一个展览。

What Kind of Brain Do You Have?Simon Baron-Cohen[1] Are there essential differences between the male and female brain? My theory is that the female brain is predominantly hard-wired for empathy, and that the male brain is predominantly hard-wired for understanding and building systems.[2] Empathising is the drive[N] to identify another person's emotions and thoughts, and to respond to these with an appropriate emotion. Systemising is the drive to analyse and explore a system, to extract underlying rules that govern the behaviour of a system; and the drive to construct systems.[3] A person (whether male or female) has a particular "brain type". There are three common brain types: for some individuals, empathising is stronger than systemising. This is called the female brain, or a brain of type E. For other individuals, systemising is stronger than empathising. This is called the male brain, or a brain of type S. Yet other individuals are equally strong in their systemising and empathising. This is called the "balanced brain", or a brain of type B.[4] A key feature of this theory is that your sex cannot tell you which type of brain you have. Not all men have the male brain, and not all women have the female brain. The central claim of this new theory is only that on average, more males than females have a brain of type S, and more females than males have a brain of type E.[5] So are females better at empathising? This theory rings true[N] at an anecdotal level. For example, we've always known that people choose different things to read in the newsagent on the railway platform or in the airport departure lounge. Women are more likely to go to the magazine rack featuring[N] fashion, romance, beauty, intimacy, relationship advice, and parenting. Men are more likely to go to a magazine rack featuring computers, cars, boats, photography, DIY, sport, hi-fi, guns, and tools.[6] But the E-S theory goes beyond such anecdotal evidence to pull together the scientific evidence, and investigate the origins of these differences.[7] The evidence for a female advantage in empathising comes from many different directions. For example, studies show that when children play together with a little movie player that has only one eye-piece[N], boys tend to get more of their fair share of looking down the eye-piece. They just shoulder the girls out of the way. Less empathy, more self-centred.[N] Or if you leave out a bunch of those big plastic cars that kids can ride on, what you see is that more little boys play the "ramming" game. They deliberately drive the vehicle into another child. The little girls ride around more carefully, avoiding the other children more often. This suggests the girls are being more sensitive to others.[8] How early are such sex differences in empathy evident? Certainly, by 12 months, girls make more eye contact than boys. But a new study carried out in my lab at Cambridge University shows that at birth, girls look longer at a face, and boys look longer at a suspended mechanical mobile. Furthermore, the Cambridge team found that how much eye contact children make is in part determined by a biological factor: prenatal testosterone. This has been demonstrated by measuring this hormone in amniotic fluid.[9] All this adds up to a large amount of evidence for a female advantage in empathising, with at least some biological determinants. What about the claimed male advantage in systemising?[10] Boys, from toddlerhood onwards, are more interested in cars, trucks, planes, guns and swords, building blocks, constructional toys, and mechanical toys systems. They seem to loveputting things together, to build toy towers or towns or vehicles. Boys also enjoy playing with toys that have clear functions, buttons to press, things that will light up, or devices that will cause another object to move.[11] You see the same sort of pattern in the adult workplace. Some occupations are almost entirely male. Think of metal-working, weapon-making, crafting musical instruments, or the construction industries, such as boat-building. The focus of these occupations is on constructing systems. Professions such as maths, physics, and engineering, which require high systemising, are also largely male-chosen disciplines.[12] The male preference for focusing on systems again is evident very early. Our Cambridge study found that at one year old, little boys showed a stronger preference to watch a film of cars (mechanical systems), than a film of a person's face (with a lot of emotional expression). Little girls showed the opposite preference.[13] We, of course, know that with time, culture and socialisation do play a role in determininga male brain or female brain. But these studies strongly suggest that biology also partly determines this.[14] Should a theory like this be a cause of concern? Some people may worry that this is suggesting one sex is better than the other, but a moment's reflection should allay this fear. The theory is saying that, on average, males and females differ in what they are drawn[N] to and what they find easy, but that both sexes have their strengths and their weaknesses. Neither sex is superior overall. (849 words)。

Mother TongueAmy Tan1 I am a writer. And by that definition, I am someone who has always loved language. I am fascinated by language in daily life. I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language the way it can evoke an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth. Language is the tool of my trade. And I use them all all the Englishes I grew up with.2 Recently, I was made keenly aware of the different Englishes I do use. I was giving a talk to a large group of people, the same talk I had already given to half a dozen other groups. The nature of the talk was about my writing, my life, and my book, The Joy Luck Club. The talk was going along well enough until I remembered one major difference that made the whole talk sound wrong. My mother was in the room. And it was perhaps the first time she had heard me give a lengthy speech, using the kind of English I have never used with her a speech filled with carefully constructed grammatical phrases, burdened, it suddenly seemed to me, with nominalized forms, past perfect tenses, conditional phrases, all the forms of standard English that I had learned in school and through books, the forms of English I did not use at home with my mother.3 Just last week, I was walking down the street with my mother, and I again found myself conscious of the English I was using, the English I do use with her. We were talking about the price of new and used furniture and I heard myself saying this: "Not waste money that way." My husband was with us as well, and he didn't notice any switch in my English. And then I realized why. It's because over the twenty years that we have been together I've often used the same kind of English with him, and sometimes he even uses it with me. It has become our language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to family talk, the language I grew up with.4 You should know that my mother's expressive command of English doesn't reflect how much she actually understands. She reads financial reports, listens to Wall Street Week (a TV financial news program), converses daily with her stockbroker, and reads many types of books with ease. Yet some of my friends tell me they understand only 50 percent of what my mother says. Some say they understand 80 to 90 percent. Some say they understand none of it, as if she were speaking pure Chinese. But to me, my mother's English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It's my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, full of observation and imagery. That was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed things, made sense of the world.5 Lately, I've been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to other people as "broken" English. But I shrink with pain when I say that. It always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than "broken", as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked certain wholeness and soundness. I've heard other terms used, "limited English", for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people's perceptions of the "limited" English speaker.6 I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother's "limited" English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is, because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of empirical evidence to support me: the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.7 My mother has long realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to ask me to call people on the phone to pretend I was she. In this guise, I was forced to ask for information or even complain and yell at people who had been rude to her. One time it was a call to her stockbroker in New York. She had cashed out her small stock portfolio and it just so happened we were going to go to New York the next week, our very first trip outside California. I had to get on the phone and say in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, "This is Mrs Tan."8 And my mother was standing in the back whispering, "Why he don't send me check, already two weeks late. So mad he lie to me, losing me money.9 And then I said in perfect English, "Yes, I'm getting rather concerned. You had agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn't arrived."10 Then she began to talk more loudly, "What he want, I come to New York tell him front of his boss, you cheating me?" And I was trying to calm her down, make her be quiet, while telling the stockbroker, "I can't tolerate any more excuses. If I don't receive the check immediately, I am going to speak to your manager when I'm in New York next week."11 Why are there not more Asian Americans represented in American literature? Why are there so few Asian Americans enrolled in creative writing programs? Why do so many Chinese students go into engineering? Well, these are broad sociological questions I can't begin to answer. But I have noticed in surveys that Asian students, as a whole, always do significantly better on math achievement tests than in English. And this makes me think that there are other Asian-American students whose English spoken in the home might also be described as "broken" or "limited". And perhaps they also have teachers who are steering them away from writing and into math and science, which is what happened to me. Fortunately, I happen to be rebellious in nature and enjoy the challenge of disproving assumptions made about me. I became an English major my first year in college, after being enrolled as pre-med.。
