GERMANY American CHINA JAPAN
Here’s the German/European way of using a knife and fork:
FAST FOOD!
Finger Foods? Nein! Americans and other Europeans rarely eat with their hands! Especially in a fine restaurant or in a formal/semiformal dining situation, even pizza is eaten with a knife and fork. However, if you are at an outdoor Grillparty or eating informally, it’s okay to eat some foods, such as hamburgers or hotdogs, with your hands.
Reserving a Table is rather popular in the USA. And it is often necessary to make a reservation. You will sometimes see short queues of people waiting for tables at restaurants-it's more pleasant to wait in the bar ,of course,if there is one-but there queues more quickly.
We eat to live, not live to eat.

Paying for the meal is also different from country to country. In China ,one person usually pays for all. In western countries, when friends eat together, they usually share the cost. This is called “going Dutch” .Also, when westerners pay the check, they usually leave some money for the waiter. This is called “leaving a tip”. Not leaving a tip is very rude. In the U.S, it’s common to leave tips of 10%,15%,or 20% . of the check. The amount depends on how good the waiter is. Good waiters can get a lot of money!

(When a dish is offered from a serving dish (a.k.a.family style), as is the traditional manner, the food may be passed around or served by a host or staff. If passed, you should pass on the serving dish to the next person i n the same direction as the other dishes are being passed. Place the serving dish on your left, take some, and pass to the person next to you. You should consider how m uch is on the serving dish and not take more than a proportional amount so that eve ryone may have some. If you do not care for any of the dish, pass it to the next pers on without comment. If being served by a single person, the server should request if the guest would like any of the dish. The guest may say "Yes, please," or "No, thank you.")

(1) Your wrists should be placed on the edge of the table while eating, fork in left hand, knife in the right.(2) Keep your hands in sight. It is not good manners to rest them on your lap. It’s polite to mop up excess sauce or gravy with bread.3. France 法国(1) Never discuss money or religion over dinner. Going Dutch is considered “the height of unsophistication”.(2) In France, a meal is like a ceremony. People relish it and make it’s a special occasion.(3) In contrast to the etiquette in Russia, it’s considered good manners to finish everything on your plate. People often cut bread directly on a table cloth rather than on a plate. Tearyour bread into bite-sized pieces before eating. Taking a bite from the whole piece is very impolite。

Not switching your fork and using your left is called the “Continental” way, and is done most often in European countries. This way is gaining acceptance. Also, cut meat a piece at a time. Cutting the entire meat up into pieces or cutting more than one at a time is tacky

•It is considered polite to take along a small gift for your host and hostess. Flowers, chocolates or champagne are always appreciated. But do not expect your gift to be used during the meal. Most dinner parties have carefully planned menu items, and your gift may not go with the meal.
Table manners were designed to keep people from scarfing food down like animals, so learn them before you eat with others. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that you should never call attention to yourself by blatantly breaking the rules set by society.
Some dinner parties are formal and have place cards where the host or hostess wants you to sit. If not, ask if there are seating preferences. Wait until the host sits before you do. In some cultures, a blessing will be said. Even if you don’t follow the beliefs of the prayer, show respect and be s ilent. If the host offers a toast, lift your glass. It is not necessary to “clink” someone else’s glass.
When to Eat何时进食If you are eating out, you should wait until all the members of your group have been served before picking up your fork. At a private dinner, observe the host or hostess and pick up your fork when heor she does. However, if you are at a buffet, you may start when there are others seated at your table.
One of the most common issues to confuse today’s diners is which utensil to use for each course. A typical rule of thumb is to start with the utensil that is farthest from your plate and work your way toward the center of your place setting. If you see the host or hostess doing something different, you may follow his or her lead.
THE 10 Do's!10个必做Turn off your cell phone before sitting down. It is extremely rude to talk on your phone or text while in the company of others.
1.Once seated, unfold your napkin and use it for occasionally wiping your lips or fingers. Atthe end of dinner, leave the napkin tidily on the place setting.
2.Keep your elbows off the table.
3.Hold the knife and fork with the handles in the palm of the hand, forefinger on top, andthumb underneath.
4 Whilst eating, you may if you wish rest the knife and fork on either side of the plate betweenmouthfuls. When you have finished eating, place them side by side in the center of the plate.Use your utensils for eating, not gesturing. Eat slowly in order to finish at the sameapproximate time as the host or hostess用餐时,如果你中途需要放下刀叉,只需把刀叉放在盘子两边。
5Compliment the hostess if you like the food, but don’t voice your opinion if you don’t. If the food is not to your liking, it is polite to at least make some attempt to eat a small amount of it unless you are allergic to it.
