All you have is what you bring with you
I've always felt a need to be prepared for whatever situatio n I've found myself in.
My mother once took me to a store when I was seven year s old. She and I got to the checkout counter, and she realized she had forgotten a couple of things on her shopping list. She left me with the cart and ran off to get what she needed.
"I'll be right back." she said.
She was gone just a few minutes, but in that time, I had loa ded all the things on the belt and everything was rung up. I wa s left staring at the cashier, who was staring at me. "Do you h ave money for me, son?" she said. "I'll need to be paid."
I didn't realize she was just trying to amuse herself. So I sto od there, ashamed and embarrassed.
By the time my mom returned, I was angry. "You left me he re with no money! This lady asked me for the money, and I ha d nothing to give her!"
Now that I'm an adult, you'll never catch me with less than $200 in my wallet. I want to be prepared in case I need it.
I've always admired people who are over-
prepared. In college, I had a classmate named Norman. One
day he was giving a presentation on an overhead projector an d in the middle of his talk, the light bulb (灯
泡) on the projector blew out. We would have to wait ten minu tes until someone found a new projector.
"It's Okay." he announced. "There's nothing to worry about. "
We watched him walk over to his bag and pull something o ut. He had brought along a spare bulb for the overhead projec tor. Who could even think of that?
I often told my students, "When you go into the wilderness, the only thing you can depend on is what you take with you." And essentially, the wilderness is anywhere but your home or office. So take money. Pack a light bulb. Be prepared.
66. Why was the boy angry with his mother?
A. His mother left him alone.
B. He lost face in front of the cashier.
C. His mother forgot to buy something.
D. He had just quarreled with the cashier.

A. He was always well-prepared.
B. His presentation was about bulbs.
C. He knew the classroom equipment was of poor quality.
D. He predicted the bulb on the projector would blow out.
68. What do the two stories tell us?
A. Accidents happen almost every day.
B. Money is the key that opens all doors.
C. In fair weather, prepare for a rainy day.
D. Chances favor those who are well-prepared.

Ever walked to the shops only to find, once there, you've co mpletely forgotten what you went for? Or struggled to rememb er the name of an old friend? For years we've accepted that a forgetful brain is as much a part of ageing as wrinkles and gr ey hair. But now a new book suggests that we've got it all wro ng.
According to The Secret Life of the Grown-
up Brain, by science writer Barbara Strauch, when it comes to the important things, our brains actually get better with age. I n fact, she argues that some studies have found that our brain hits its peak between our 40s and 60s-
much later than previously thought.
Furthermore, rather than losing many brain cells as we age , we retain (保
留) them, and even produce new ones well into middle age. F or years it's been assumed that brain, much like the body, dec lines with age. But the longest, largest study into what happen s to people as they age suggests otherwise.
This continuing research has followed 6,000 people since 1 956, testing them every seven years. It has found that on aver age, participants performed better on cognitive (认知
的) tests in their 40s and 50s than they had done in their 20s. Specifically, older people did better on tests of vocabulary, ver bal memory (how many words you can remember) and proble m solving.
Where they performed less well was number ability and per ceptual speed—
how fast you can push a button when ordered. However, with more complex tasks such as problem-
solving and language, we are at our best at middle age and b eyond. In short, researchers are now coming up with scientific proof that we do get wiser with age.
Neuroscientists are also finding that we are happier with ag eing. A recent US study found older people were much better at controlling and balancing their emotions. It is thought that w hen we're younger we need to focus more on the negative as pects of life in order to learn about the possible dangers in the
world, but as we get older we've learned our lessons and are sub-
consciously aware that we have less time left in life: therefore, it becomes more important for us to be happy.
69. Barbara Strauch probably agrees that ________.
A. people's brains work best between their 40s and 60s
B. the young are better at handling important things
C. ageing leads to the decline of the function of the brain
D. wrinkles and grey hair are the only symbols of ageing
70. People are happier with age because ________.
A. they know how to share feelings
B. they learn to value the time left
C. they cannot focus on negative aspects
D. they do not realize the possible dangers
71. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. People get more forgetful with age.
B. People get wiser with age.
C. People get happier with age.
D. People get m ore self-aware with age.
C
As we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society h
as been shifting from curing disease to preventing disease-especially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors , such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued furthe r. Imagine a person who is about the right weight, but does no t eat very nutritious foods, who feels OK but exercises only oc casionally, who goes to work every day, but is not an outstand ing worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but d oes not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abn ormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot he althier.
The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished bet ween someone who is merely "not ill" and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body's special need s. Both types have simply been called "well." In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the ter ms "well" and "wellness" only to those who are actively strivin g to maintain and improve their health. People who are well ar e concerned with nutrition and exercise, and they make a poin t of monitoring their body's condition. Most importantly, perha ps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matter
s related to their health. Even people who have a physical dis ease or handicap may be "well," in this new sense, if they ma ke an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in th e face of their physical limitations. "Wellness" may perhaps be st be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, th e concept of wellness can have a beneficial impact on the wa ys in which people face the challenges of daily life.
72. Today medical care is placing more stress on _________.
A. keeping people in a healthy physical condition
B. monitoring patients' body functions
C. removing people's bad living habits
D. ensuring people's psychological well-being
73. According to the author, the true meaning of "wellness" is for people _________.
A. to best satisfy their body's special needs
B. to strive to maintain the best possible health
C. to meet the strictest standards of bodily health
D. to keep a proper balance between work and leisure
74. According to the author, which of the following groups of p
eople would be considered healthy?
A. People who have strong muscles as well as slim figures.
B. People who are not presently experiencing any symptom s of disease.
C. People who try to be as healthy as possible, regardless of their limitations.
D. People who can recover from illness even without seeki ng medical care.

Text messaging is a surprisingly good way to receive candi d responses to sensitive questions, according to a new study t o be presented this week at the annual meeting of the Americ an Association for Public Opinion Research. "The preliminary (初步
的) results of our study suggest that people are more likely to disclose sensitive information via text messages than in voice interviews," says Fred Conrad, a psychologist at the Universit y of Michigan Institute for Social Research.
"This is sort of surprising," says Conrad, "since many peopl e thought that texting would decrease the likelihood of disclosi ng sensitive information because it creates a persistent, visual record of questions and answers that others might see on yo
ur phone and in the cloud."
With text, the researchers also found that people were less likely to engage in "satisficing"-
a survey industry term referring to the common practice of givi ng good enough, easy answers. "'We believe people give mor e precise answers via texting because there's just not the time pressure in a largely asynchronous (非同步
的) mode like text that there is in phone interviews," says Con rad. "As a result, respondents are able to take longer to arrive at more accurate answers."
Conrad conducted the study with Michael Schober, a profe ssor of psychology at the New School for Social Research. " We're in the early stages of analyzing our findings," says Sch ober. "But so far it seems that texting may reduce some respo ndents' tendency to shade the truth or to present themselves i n the best possible light in an interview, even when they know it's a human interviewer they are communicating with via text. What we cannot yet be sure of is who is most likely to be disc losive in text. Is it different for frequent texters, or generational , for example?"
For the study, the researchers recruited approximately 600 iPhone-
users through Google Ads, offering them iTunes Store reward
s to participate in the study. Their goals were to see whether r esponses to the same questions differed depending on sever al variables: whether the questions were asked via text or voic e, whether a human or a computer asked the questions, and whether the environment, including the presence of other peo ple and the likelihood of multitasking, affected the answers. 75. The underlined word "candid" in Para. 1 probably means _ _______.
A. straightforward
B. appropriate
C. ambiguou s
D. objective
76. Compared with phone interviews, texting has the strength that people could ________.
A. present their best to the interviewers
B. have mo re time to make a reply
C. pay less for sending a message
D. enjoy mor
e freedom o
f speech

D. Texting Up s Truthfulness

In the face of the tensions and pressures we all face every single day, a sense of humor can be helpful. The ability to lau gh is very important to our fullest development and to our "me ntal health". And if we can laugh at ourselves, we're even furt her along the road to self-
fulfillment. Consider the following example.
Gordon is hoping to become a professional singer. He has a good voice, and has performed in public many times. But he 's very sensitive about his abilities. For instance, if his voice c oach suggests he practice a particular song a few more times until he gets it right, Gordon falls apart, absolutely certain that the coach is implying that he isn't any good and he has no fut ure in music.
He mentioned his sensitivity in his paper for a psychology c lass. The psychology professor called him in, outwardly to talk about the paper, but hoping to give the boy a chance to open up about the problem. The teacher rarely told her students w hat they ought to do, but she felt Gordon should know that su ch extreme sensitivity would make it difficult for him in the ent ertainment field, where stage personnel, and fellow performer s often are very hard on new talent. She asked Gordon if he f elt he had made necessary preparations to follow through in s uch a competitive and difficult business.
Gordon got angry with the teacher, pointing a brave finger at her, and told her she was "dead wrong" about him. Further, Gordon asked what she could possibly know about music an d the pressures of the profession. The teacher stood up and t urned Gordon around, right in the middle of a sentence, askin g him to continue, but to watch himself in the mirror on the ba ck of the office door as he talked. Gordon tried to go on, pointi ng and gesticulating, but suddenly he saw his expression in th e mirror, then when he turned to face the psychologist, he noti ced a smile beginning to form on the teacher's face. At the ver y top of his "outburst," Gordon burst out laughing. He stopped his aggressive talk and asked the teacher if he looked that rid iculous all the time.
Seeing himself "objectively" made Gordon realize that how rid iculous it was to take himself so seriously. In our everyday life , the ability to catch ourselves being so serious, bearing all th e burdens of the world, and trying to save the human race hel ps us relieve some built-up tension through laughter.
Laughter is a necessary part of mental health. Laughter is o ne of the ways in which we relax and recreate the selfhood. T he things we find in humor may vary, but the experiences of h umor, pleasure, and enjoyment are extremely important and must be fostered.
78. From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that Gordon _ ________.
A. has broken up with his coach
B. has failed to be a professional singer
C. keeps practicing and hopes for the best
D. feels very sensitive to other people's comments
79. Why did the psychologist talk with Gordon?
A. To discuss his paper with him.
B. To help him realize his problem.
C. To point out his rude behaviors.
D. To offer advice on reducing pressure.
80. How does the author support his ideas?
A. By offering analyses.
B. By providing rese arch results.
C. By giving an example.
D. By stating an ar gument.

Most drinks stating that they are fruit-flavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the Briti sh Food Commission.
"Shoppers need to check the labels (标
签) before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual conten t can be non-
existent," said Food Commission spokesperson Lan Tokelove . "Food production is highly competitive. 81 It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are being tric ked."
Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food produ cts such as fruits, meats and vegetables, or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Research ers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberry-
flavored products sold in stores. 82 Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.
83 Let's take jam as an example. Some strawberry-flavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial colors, flav ors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all.
84 Consumers have the rights to know clearly about wha t they have bought. Under current UK law, Food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. "Describing a product as strawberry flavor and covering the s urface of the package with pictures of strawberries is misleadi ng. 85 Unfortunately, it is also legal and widespread," Tokel ove said. "It's time to take measures to protect the consumers' rights."
A. The products which contain real fruit are popular with peopl e.
B. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.
C. They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain an y fruit at all.
D. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they ar e likely to do so.
E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.
F. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of stra wberry or even no fruit at all.
G. The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a prod uct should be listed on the packaging.
