The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in elementary school. Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports lover, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual (个体的) skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch.
Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. And at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. During the break time, magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly feature d articles on physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force(RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare money to use to join a gym.
So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation (基础) continue in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered important even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.

A.She changed the focus into reading. B.She stuck to working out.
C.She regularly exercised on weekends. D.She joined Royal Canadian Air Force.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To express her love for sports.

Teenagers who travel around the world alone have been making headlines quite often. A young person alone in a dangerous situation attracts attention and supporters. Young sailors also attract various views. For example, Jessica Watson was asked by the government to call off her solo trip across the ocean, yet the Prime Minister (总理) called her “a hero for young Australians” when she returned. It seems views are poles apart on the ability and independence of young people.
Some experts tell us that teenage brains are likely to make wrong judgments. But such ideas often do not apply to specific individuals (个体) . Between the ages of 14 and 18, teenagers differ greatly in their abilities. The amount of independence that each is allowed should be determined not simply by their ages but by discussion with the related, responsible adults. Some teens are certainly inexperienced and make childish mistakes, but the ones who attempt dangerous journeys normally do so by winning the confidence of hard-headed and experienced adult supporters.
But it’s also wrong to think that any 16-year-old can make a hit as Jessica Watson. Watson calls herself “a common girl who had a dream”. Her purpose is to encourage teenagers but this idea can have the opposite effect of making them feel not good enough because great achievements are beyond them. Should all teens have such wild dreams? Actually, individuals face different conditions that limit their dreams.
Teenagers who travel around the world alone should not be judged by preconceived (先入为主的) views about young people. Nor should young “common” teenagers feel pressure to long for extraordinary personal goals. In fact, I believe the example of solo sailing overstresses what an individual can do. The teenage years are when most of us “common” people learn that we can achieve great things in cooperation with others.
28. Why is Jessica Watson mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To set a heroic example for teenagers.
B.To point out the public’s interest in young people.
C.To introduce different opinions on teenagers’ adventures.
D. To show the Prime Minister disagreed with the government.
29. What can determine the amount of teenagers’ independence?
A. Different journeys. B. Brain development.
C. Communication with adults. D. Confidence in themselves.
30. What does Watson mean by calling herself “a common girl who had a dream”?
A. She likes dangerous journeys. B. Teenagers can make success.
C. She can accept she is common. D. Teenagers should go travelling.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards teenagers’ act of travelling alone?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Uncaring. D. Uncertain.
Giant pandas could be left hungry and struggling to survive by global warming, scientists have warned. A new study predicts that climate change (气候变化) is certain to des troy much of the bamboo on which the pandas depend for food. Main panda habitat (栖息地) in China could be completely lost by the end of the century. Human development adds to the risk by preventing the pandas from getting to places where bamboo is less affected by rising temperatures.
Bamboo, which covers the forest floor where the pandas live, is the single item in the pandas’ diet and also provides food and shelter for other animals. The plant’s unusual reproductive (繁殖的) cycle limits its ability to get used to climate change. One species studied by the scientists only flowers and reproduces every 30-35 years. Experts pointed out that three main bamboo species were likely to disappear as the climate warmed.
“We will need advance actions to protect the present giant panda habitats,” said the leading researcher Mao-Ning Tuanmu, from Yale Universi ty in the US. “We need time to look for areas that might become panda habitats in the future, and to think now about connection between habitats for pandas and other animals.”
Efforts to protect pandas should now aim to protect areas that have a better chance of supplying pandas with food, despite climate change. Natural “bridges” could also be created to help the pandas escape from a bamboo shortage. Looking at the climate impact on the bamboo can help us prepare for the challenges that the panda will likely face in the future.
32. What can be learned from the first paragraph?
A.People stop giant pandas from travelling for food.
B.All the panda habitats could disappear in the near future.
C.Global warming will completely destroy the bamboo in China.
D.Giant pandas could be short of food because of climate change.
33. Why does climate change seriously affect the bamboo?
A.Giant pandas live on a single food resource.
B.It takes a long time for bamboo to reproduce.
C.Three main kinds of bamboo have disappeared.
D.Bamboo have no ability to flower and reproduce.
34. What does Mao-Ning Tuanmu agree with according to the third paragraph?
A.Planting more bamboos for pandas.
B.Setting up protection areas for pandas.
C.Getting pandas away from present habitats.
D.Helping pandas connect with other animals.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Effect of Climate Change on Pandas B.Ways to Protect Pandas
C.Research on Bamboo Disappearance D.Risks to the survival of Pandas Beginning a new course, a new term, life in a new city or country, and a new household can be big
