Each of the passages below is followed by some questions. For each question there are four answers marked A, B, C and D. Read the passages carefully and choose the best answer to each of the questions. Mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET. (40 points)
Passage 1
There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. Information in long-term memory can be remembered at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks. However, information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over. The following experiment shows how
short-term memory has been studied.
Henning studied how students who are learning English as a second language remember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English: beginning, intermediate, advanced, and native-speaking students.
To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English. Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whether, wither, and wetter are four words that sound alike. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning. Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.
Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike; students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning. Henning’s results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in their short-term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory.
21. Henning made the experiment in order to study .

Passage 2
How men first learned to invent words is unknown: in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented some sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.
The power of words, then, lies in their association – the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience, and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increase.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears.
26. According to the passage, the origin of language is __________.
A. a matter that is hidden
B. a question difficult to answer
C. a problem not yet solved
D. a legend handed down from the past
27. The real power of words exists in their __________.

C. use beautiful words
D. cause us to have feelings
Passage 3
Almost two million British children are suffering ill-health and are not growing as well as they could because of poor food quality and variety. A report called ―The Hunger Within‖ complains about the British government’s decision to stop providing inexpe nsive school meals and free milk for school children. This decision has caused much suffering among the children of Britain.
Many children are below the weight and height they should be. In some poor places in Britain, there is a lack of iron in what many of the children regularly eat. Children’s emotional, academi c and physical developments have been badly affected as a result.
Of particular concern is the increase of lung disease. This disease spreads easily among those who have weakened health due to po or, unbalanced food. In the 1960’s, lung disease was conside red a childhood disease easy to put an end to, provided all children were able to have healthy, well-balanced, regular meals. Disappointingly, it appears to be on the increase in certain population groups in Britain. This is especially a concern at a time when the British economy is experiencing healthy growth. Despite an increase in wealth of the country as a whole, some children are still suffering.

A.It is becoming poorer and deserves public attention.
B.It is not as bad as reported in ―The Hunger Within‖.
C.British children enjoy better health than children in other countries.
D.British children are not as healthy as children in other European countries.
Passage 4
Loch Ness(尼斯湖)is a lake resulting from a movement in the earth’s crust. It is the largest body of fresh water in Britain. There is more water in Loch Ness than all the other lakes in England, Scotland and Wales put together.
Because of the great amount of water in the loch a thermocline(温跃层)lies at around 100 feet down in the loch. The top 100 feet of water changes temperature depending on the weather conditions but below the thermocline the temperature never changes from 44 degrees Fahrenheit. So, as the surface water cools in winter and nears freezing point, it sinks and is replaced by warmer water from below. This can cause the loch to steam on very cold days. In fact it has been estimated that the heat given off by the loch in winter is the equivalent to burning two million tons of coal.
It is said that the residents around the loch used to tell their children stories of the kelpie(马形水鬼)to keep them away from the dark dangerous waters of the loch. The story is of a horrible beast who lived in the loch and when hungry would leave its watery home and change itself into a beautiful horse which would wait for some unlucky traveler to climb on its back. Then it would jump straight into the loch and feed on its victim.
Most people think that the Loch Ness monster first appeared in the 1930’s and it is certain from this time that the loch became famous. However, sightings of something unusual in the loch date back much further than this.

C. the cold air on the surface of the loch
D. the change of large amounts of fresh water to seawater
39. The stories of the kelpie would ____________.
A. discourage children from playing near the loch

Passage 1
Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand — he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him.
What visional(梦幻的)artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experience into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artists.
Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and at rest; their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Modern artists might say that they only choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. However, they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects.
If one painter chooses to paint a decaying(溃烂的)leg and another lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something — all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.

Passage 2
Are you forty years old and fat? Do you wear fine clothes? Do you look rich? If so, be careful. There is a pickpocket(小偷)looking for you.
A typical pickpocket is under forty years old, usually a male. He has smart fingers and has trained himself in running. Generally, he carries a newspaper or magazine in his hand. He may appear fairly clever and pretend to be calm. The good pickpocket always operates in crowded places. Very well-dressed men and slightly drunken(喝醉的)men are favorite victims of the pickpocket. An average sized department store hires about six or seven full-time detectives who are all the time looking for pickpockets. Many police districts(地区)have detectives(侦探)whose only job is to catch pickpockets quickly. But a good pickpocket knows these things and is very careful. He is especially busy on buses, trains and subways(地铁)between 11: 00 a.m. and 3: 00 p.m. when there are many shoppers with much money to spend.
Pickpocketing makes nearly 40% of daytime(白天的)crime in America. The sentence for the crime is usually three to five years in prison. However, after release, pickpockets may commit some serious crimes. So be careful.

Passage 3
One of the most important reading skills you will ever develop is being able to find a piece of information rapidly and correctly.
Looking for information in a book is easy if you know how to use the Table of Contents in the front of the book. It lists the different sections the book contains in the order they are written. In the back of the book is another section, where all of the topics in the book are listed alphabetically(按字母顺序). The page numbers on which the topics are discussed are listed as well.
Finding a job or a place to live is made easier by knowing how to read newspaper advertisements, or ―ads‖. In the back of most newspapers is a section that lists
―Employment(就业)Opportunities‖ fo r anyone looking for work. Usually nearby are sections called ―For Rent‖ and ―For Sale‖ in which apartments and houses are listed for those seeking a place to live in.
Of course, making a phone call to a friend or business is easier if you know how to use a telephone book. It can also be useful in finding services available in a town or city.
Traveling can be more enjoyable and less stressful(有压力的)if you know how to read time charts, or timetables, for buses, planes, and trains. When you are in an unfamiliar(不熟悉的)town, knowing how to read a street map can be very helpful.
Understanding words is made easier when using a dictionary, especially when dealing with a foreign language.
