The Longing For Better LifeThe Reading Report of Oliver Twist
Ⅰ.Introduction
1.1The Author
The author of this novel is Charles John Huffam Dickens(February 1812 –9 June 1870), an English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian period.Dickens enjoyed a wider popularity and fame than had any previous author during his lifetime, and he remains popular, having been responsible for some of English literature's most iconic novels and characters.Dickens's work has been highly praised for its realism, comedy, mastery of prose, unique personalities and concern for social reform. He wrote many successful stories, but the Oliver Twist is the most famous one.1.2 Summary Oliver Twist is born into a life of poverty and misfortune in a workhouse.Orphaned almost from his first breath by his mother’s death in childbirth and his father’s unexplained absence, Oliver is meagerly provided for under the terms of the Poor Law, and spends the first nine years of his life at a baby farm in the 'care' of a woman named Mrs.Mann.Along with other juvenile offenders against the poor laws, Oliver is brought up with little food and few comforts.Oliver, remains in the workhouse for six months. He finally decides to run away to London. Here he receives an education in villainy from the criminal gang of Fagin that includes the brutal thief Bill Sikes, the famous artful Dodger and Nancy, Bill whore.Oliver is rescued by the intervention of a benefactorbut the mysterious Monks gets
the gang to kidnap the boy again.Nancy intervenes but is murdered viciously by Sikes after she has showed some redeeming qualities and has discovered Monk sinister intention. The story closes happily and with justice for Bumble and the cruel Monks who has hidden the truth of Oliver parentage out of malice.Ⅱ.Major themes
In Oliver Twist, Dickens mixes grim realism and merciless satire as a way to describe the effects of industrialism on 19th-century England and to criticise the harsh new Poor Laws.Oliver, an innocent child, is trapped in a world where his only options seem to be the workhouse, Fagin's gang, a prison, or an early grave. In the midst of corruption and degradation, the essentially passive Oliver remains pure-hearted;he steers away from evil when those around him give in to it, and in proper fairy-tale fashion, he eventually receives his reward —leaving for a peaceful life in the country, surrounded by kind friends.Oliver, born for better things, struggles to survive in the savage world of the underclass before finally being rescued by his family and returned to his proper place—a commodious country house.Ⅲ.Reflection
After reading this novel, I am really deeply impressed by such a little boy.How can he still remain pure in mind although suffered those oppressive miseries.I was shocked by his sufferings, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. So I think Oliver is very brave and indomitable.Facing death or to be a thief, he chose justice.Although he suffered huge pain, but his longing for better life is never flinched. He liked wonderful life and brightness future. We are living in happiness, but we are always dissatisfied and complaining. We never thought that there are still lots of people who are suffering from pain.So we should learn
something from Oliver. No matter how bad the circumstance is, we need to keep an optimistic mood to pursue a better life.Ⅳ.References。
