I was in a strange city and I didn’t know the city at all.And what’s more,I couldn’t speak a word of the language. After having spent the first day in the town center, I decided to lose my way on my second day, since I was sure that this was the better way of getting to know the strange city. I got on the first bus in the morning, rode on it for several stops, and then got off and walked on. The first two hours passed happily enough. Then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch. After walking about for some time, I decided I had better ask the way. The trouble was that the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street where I lived and even that was pronounced badly.
I stopped to ask a friendly-looking newspaper seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to give him some money and went on my way. Then I met a policeman. I asked him at once. The policeman listened to me carefully, smiled and took me by the arm. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I thanked him politely and began walking on.
About an hour passed and I found that the houses were getting fewer and green fields could be seen on either side of me.
The thing left for me to do was to find the nearest bus stop.

Some people have a very poor sense(感觉) of direction. Unlucky, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.
When I was a little girl, I never dared ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk round in circle and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.
Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone asks me the way somewhere, I would say, “sorry, I am a stranger here.”
Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps. I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with s omeone at my office and I didn’t want to keep him waiting.
When I just got to my office, the secretary showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at the first sight!

Few words are spoken more often every day on t he streets of Britain than “I’m sorry”. This phrase has become such a common response(反应) that it has taken on a lot of meanings.
Saying “Sorry” means to apologize(道歉). This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a native speaker and as a student of foreign languages.
But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can’t get out of the way in time. The man bumps (碰撞) into the woman. Who should say sorry? Naturally, the man should say sorry, because it was he who wasn’t looking where he was going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize.
It is known that British people, like most people, do not enjoy conflict(冲突).So to quickly calm the situation, British people will apologize to each other.
Other times it may sound funny to hear “sorry”. Some of my friends say it at restaurants, as they ask the waiter: “Sorry, but can I order another drink?” It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter. In Britain, sorry doesn’t always mean exactly what you think.
( ) 60. According to the passage, “saying sorry” is a cultural expression in .
A. the USA
B. the UK
C. the WWF
D. the UN
( ) 61. What does the underlined phrase “take on” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.从事
B.雇佣
C. 呈现
D.拿起
( ) 62. The example in the third paragraph is used to .
A. describe a situation that people should avoid
B. describe how “sorry” has another meaning in Britain
C. explain why people should say sorry to each other
D. show how polite British people are
( ) 63. The restaurant example shows that “sorry” can be used to .
A.apologize
B. calm a situation down
C. explain what you’re thinking about
D. ask a waiter to bring something
( ) 64. What might be a good title for this passage?
A.“I’m S orry” Is More Than just an Apology
B. Traditional British Manners
C. How to Best Catch O thers’ Attention
D. Finding a Way out of a Difficult Situation

阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容,从短文后方框内的选项中选出能填入文中空白处的最佳选项。
(提示:每个选项只用一次,选项中有一项为多余选项)
You will get different answers if you ask people from different countries the question “Could you tell me the way to the post office?”
In Japan, people use landmarks(地标) instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers. “ 65 Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In Kansas, America, there are no towns or buildings within miles 66 For example, people will say,“Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
67 A person will often say, “Follow me.” Then he or she will take you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes if a person doesn't know the answer to your question, he or she, like a New Yorker, might say,“Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers“I don't know.”People there think saying “I don't know.” is not polite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. 68 But one thing will help you everywhere. You might not understand a person's words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language. 69 Go on in that direction and you may find the place
65. _______ 66. ______ 67. ______ 68. ______ 69. ______

五、综合填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面的材料,在空白处填入一个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
(提示:每空不超过三个单词)
When you visit a foreign country, it is important to know how to ask for help politely, and we also need to learn how to be polite when we ask for help.
If you’re a good speaker, when you talk with different people, the70 (express) you use might depend on whom you are speaking to or how 71 (good) you know them. If you say to your teacher, “When is the school trip?”, this might sound 72 (polite). But if you say, “Excuse me, Mr. West. Do you know when the school trip is?”, this will sound much more polite. However, it is all right to ask the question 73 (direct), like with your classmates.
Usually polite questions are 74 (long). For example, “Could you please ...?” or “May I ask ...?” It sounds more polite to say, “Peter, could you please tell me your e-mail address?”75 “Peter, tell me your e-ma il address.” Sometimes we even need to spend time76 (lead) into a request. For example, with a 77 (strange) on the street, we might first say, “Excuse me, I wonder if you can help me” or “I’m sorry to trouble you, but ...” 78 asking for help.
In short, it is important to learn how to use 79 right language in different situation. This will help you become better at communicating with other people .
70._______ 71. ______ 72. ______ 73. ______ 74. ______
75.______ 76. ______ 77. _______ 78. ______ 79. ______

When you have finished looking at the things on show, take a lift up to the fourth floor. You can go to the cafe for a drink, but don’t stay too long. If you want to know more about the museum, you can buy books or magazines, or ask the guide for help. Remember, the most helpful

We act, we improve
Ladies and gentlemen,
We have entered a new area. As students, it’s our duty to study hard. Bu t to be a qualified middle school student, I think we have a lot of things to do.
First, we should learn to be independent and honest. We’re supposed to be friendly to others and behave politely in public. Second, we should have good habits. Habits play an important role in our life. We’d better develop our interests and the ability to create. Third, we should care more about others and be thankful to all the people who have helped us. Value the time we spend with our family and friends in our daily life. Last but not least, I think we should exercise more to keep healthy.
In a word, the more we act, the better we will improve.。
