As young parents, my husband and I felt that at age 6 and 8, our children were old enough to be cleaning their rooms and making their beds. But they thought 36 . My complaints, repeating myself, even self-justified shouting were landing on 37 ears. I felt frustrated , and very often a whole afternoon’s scolding would end with their 38 into tears, I realized I needed to 39 my methods of “mothering”.
One day while they were at school, I had great fun 40 their rooms. On their desks, in plain 41 , I left the cards: “Dear Bill (the other card was 42 to Sarah), your room was messy this morning and I’m sure you like it clean. Love, the House Fairy. ” 43 arriving back, the children were 44 excited to receive the little note from the House Fairy. The next day, their rooms were fairly tidy. Sure enough, there was another note from the House Fairy 45 for them, thanking them for th eir nice “gift” of a clean room and 46 asking them to play a certain violin 47 . Each day, thank--you notes would be worded differently to keep the ideas 48 .
Sometimes the House Fairy would propose a little 49 : “If you can finish your homework today and 50 it before dinner, I’ d like to watch a particular television program with you tonight. ” Sometimes some colored markers or other little items would be left in 51 of jobs especially well done the day 52 .
53 I can’t remember how long “the House Fairy” continued leaving her love notes. When they were no longer age appropriate (合适的), we used various versions
of Post-Its. The bathroom mirror became the 54 centre of our home. Appointments, notices about visiting relatives, lesson schedules, and changes in plans could be posted.
We all benefited from and 55 the idea of sharing reminders and daily details
of life through notes. I believe the true legacy of the House Fairy notes survives
in our frequent and enjoyable communication.

A
The slogan “a dog is for life, not just for Christmas” has been going strong for 27 years now. Dogs and cats have been popular Christmas gifts in the gifts in the UK and Europe for many years. But some people still haven’t quite got the message.
The slogan still holds good. Some 105,000 dogs were rounded up by local government last year because they had been abandoned, many of them shortly after the festival season.
The main reason given by owners for handing their dogs over to the Dogs Trust is that the dogs need more attention than they can give; behavioral problems and moving home are also reasons given.
But Eleanor Silk, the Trus t’s communications director, says, “It’s often four or five months after Christmas, in early summer, when owners find that the dog has got too big and too active, or it hasn’t been trained properly and has caused damage around the home.”
In any case, some organizations that help pets are quick to point out that if you are serious about getting a puppy(小狗) as a pet, Christmas is not the time to do it. Puppies need to get used to their new surroundings, to be introduced to a routine, and to be looked after like small children. It’s hard to meet any of these needs at Christmas. What’s more, pulling a puppy out of a Christmas stocking in itself sends the wrong message to children. It encourages children to think of the puppy as a toy, rather than a responsibility.
Appreciating what you’re taking on with a dog can be a serious realization. “For life” means thinking about the effect they’ll have on your life. It also infers you will need to care for the dog for its whole life.
56.What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Dogs and Cats—the Most Popular Christmas Gifts.
B. A pet is for Life, Not just for Christmas.
C. How to Take Care of Your Pets over Christmas.
D. Let’s Help Those Abandoned Pets.
57. The underlined words “rounded up” in Paragraph 2 mean “________”.
A. given out as gifts
B. thrown away
C. gathered into one place
D. raised to make money
58. The fifth paragraph mainly tells us________.
A. how to take best care of Christmas pets
B. the right time to have a puppy as a pet
C. the reasons why Christmas is not the time to get a pet
D. the worries about Christmas pets from organizations that help pets
59. Why is the author against the idea of putting a dog in the Christmas stocking
as a Christmas gift?
A. Because these dogs can still cause damage.
B. Because children will not take dogs seriously.
C. Becau se children don’t like to have dogs as Christmas gifts.
D. Because a Christmas stocking is not big enough to put a dog in.
B
Labor force is defined as being the total number of people who are available to work and earn income. This definition includes everyone who is employed or seeking paid employment, so it includes employers and the self-employed. Labor is one of the country’s resources which can be combined with other resources to produce the goods and services wanted by the community.
Although the size of the workforce depends a great deal on the size of the total population, there are several other influences which also affect it. The age distribution (分布) of the total population has a very marked effect on the available workforce. If the population has a high proportion of very young people or of those too old to work, then the available workforce would be lower than if there were an balanced spread age distribution. If the population naturally grows rapidly, the number of births greatly exceeds the number of deaths then as a total population increases proportion of the workforce declines.
Sometimes a population is described as aging which means that the birth rate is either falling or growing very slowly, and as people retire from the workforce there are insufficient numbers of young people entering it to replace those who are leaving it. In that situation the population is top-heavy with older people. So the percentage of the population in the workforce declines when there is either a rapid increase in births or a falling birth rate.
The age distribution of the population has several important effects on the economy. If the population is aging and there is an increase in the number of people retiring without a corresponding increase in the number entering the workforce, this raises the problem of the ability of the economy to provide a reasonable level of social services to the retired group. If the aged are to be cared for in special homes, finance must be available for that purpose. If the size of the workforce is small relative to the total population, then the government tax revenue(税收) is relatively low and either the government has less money available to it or the workforce members have to be taxed more heavily.
60. The conclusion which can be drawn from the second paragraph is that___________.
A. a natural growth of population leads to a balanced workforce
B. a large population does not necessarily mean a higher proportion of workforce
C. the larger the population, the higher the proportion of the workforce
D. the workforce will be lower, if the population has a balanced age distribution
61.When a population is said to be aging, ___________.
A. there are more people retiring than those entering the workforce
B. the birth rate must be growing
C. there should be an oversupply of workforce
D. There are more people entering the workforce than those retiring
62. The population which is top-heavy with older people ___________ of a country.
A. leads to the high rate of unemployment
B. results in low tax on the workforce members
C. affects employees’ incomes
D. places pressure on the economy
C
A person, like a commodity(商品), needs packaging. But going too far is absolutely undesirable. A little exaggeration, however, does no harm when it shows the person’s unique qualities to their advantages. To show personal attractiveness in a casual and natural way, it is important for one to have a clear knowledge of oneself. A skilled packager knows how to add art to nature without any signs of embellishment(装饰), so that the person so packaged is not a commodity but a human being, lively and lovely.
A young person, especially a female, shining with beauty and full of life, has all the favor granted by God. Any attempt to make up would be self-defeating. Youth, however, comes and goes in a flash. Packaging for the middle-aged is primarily to hide the marks made by years. If you still enjoy life enough to keep self-confidence and work at pioneering work, you are unique in your natural qualities, and your attractiveness and grace will remain. Elderly people are beautiful if their river of life has been, through plains, mountains and jungles, running its course as it should. You have really lived your life, which now arrives at a self-satisfied stage of quietness and calmness with no interest in fame or wealth .There is no need to make use of hair dying. The snow-capped mountain is itself a beautiful scene of fairyland. Let your looks change from young to old in step with the natural aging process so as to keep in harmony with nature, for harmony itself is beauty, while the other way round will only end in unpleasantness. To be in the elder’s company is like reading a thick book of deluxe(better quality) edition that attracts one so much as to be unwilling to part with.
As long as one finds where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a commodity sets up its brand by the right packaging.
63. It can be concluded from the text that_______.
A. proper packing makes people attractive
B. people should be packed in a special way
C. elderly people also care about packing
D. people should be packed at all ages
64. According to the author, if you want to keep in harmony with nature, you should_______.
A. dye your hair
B. make up at a young age
C. follow the aging process
D. give up fame and wealth
65. For the middle-aged, attractiveness________.
A. hardly exists
B. is the strongest
C. comes from the inside
D. comes from the appearance
66. The underlined sentence means that elderly people _______.
A. are usually packed like a finely-made book
B. experience a lot and have rich knowledge of life
C. do a lot of traveling and can give you much information
D. enjoy reading thick books of beautiful nature and fairyland
D
Some houses are designed to be smart. Others have smart designs. An example of the second type of house won the Award of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects.
Located on the shore of Sullivan’s Island off the coast of South Carolina, the award-winning cube-shaped beach house was built to replace one damaged by Hurricane Hugo years ago. In September 1989, Hugo struck South Carolina, killing 18 people and damaging or destroying 36,000 homes in the state.
Before Hugo, many new houses built along South Carolina’s shoreline were poorly constructed, according to architect Ray Huff, who created the cleverly-designed beach house. Now all new shoreline houses are required to meet stricter, better-enforced codes. The new beach house on Sullivan’s Island should be strong enough not to be damaged by a Category 3 hurricane with peak winds of 179 to 209 kilometres per hour.
At first sight, the house on Sullivan’s Island looks anything but hurricane-proof. Its redwood shell makes it look like “a large party lantern” at night. But looks can be de ceiving. The house’s wooden frame is strengthened with long steel rods(杆) to give it extra strength.
To further protect the house from hurricane damage, Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings(木桩) buried deep in the sand. Pilings might appear insecure, but they are strong enough to support the weight of the house. They also raise the house above storm waves. The pilings allow the waves to run under the house instead of running into it. “The waves of water come ashore at tremendous speeds and cause most of the damage done to beach-front buildings,” said Huff.
Huff designed the timber pilings to be partially concealed(隐藏) by the house’s ground-to-roof shell. “The shell masks the pilings so that the house doesn’t look like it’s standing with its legs pulled up,” said Huff. In the event of storm, the shell should break apart and let the waves rush under the house, the
architect explained.
67. After Hurricane Hugo, new houses built along South Carolina’s shore line are required to .
A. be easily pulled down
B. look smarter in design
C. meet stricter building standards
D. be designed to be cube-shaped
68. The award-winning beach house is quite strong because .
A. it is strengthened by steel rods
B. it is made of redwood
C. it is in the shape of a shell
D. it is built with timber and concrete
69. Huff raised the house 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings in order to .
A. avoid peak winds of about 200 km/h
B. bury stronger pilings deep in the sand
C. break huge sea waves into smaller one
D. prevent the waves from running into it
70. It can be inferred from the passage that the house’s shell should be .
A. smooth
B. waterproof
C. easily broken apart
D. extremely hard

How can I fight laziness?
Lazy people will never amount to anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.
___71____ Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. ___72____
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child to promote responsibility. ___73____
___74____ Spouses and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. To fight household laziness, lead by example. Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when your are surrounded by motivated people.
____75___ Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.
A. Knowing how to fight laziness is important.
B. One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.
C. Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home.
D. Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy , such as a good
dinner or a film.
E. Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.
F. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.
G. Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life.
