他到达晋察冀边区后方医院后,第一周内就检查了520个伤病员。

第二周白求恩大夫就开始施行手术。

四个星期的连续工作,使147个伤病员很快又带着健康的身体回到前线。

在晋察冀的一次战斗中,他曾经连续69个小时为115名伤员动了手术。

他的手术台,曾经安在离前线五里地的村中小庙里,大炮和机关枪在平原上咆哮着,敌人的炮弹落在手术室后面,爆炸开来,震得小庙上的瓦片格格地响。

白求恩大夫却在小庙里紧张地动着手术。

他不肯转移,他说:“离火线远了,伤员到达的时间会延长,死亡率就会增高。

战士在火线上都不怕危险,我们怕什么危险?”两天两夜,他一直在手术台上工作着,直到战斗结束。

为了保住伤员的性命,白求恩大夫把自己的鲜血输给了中国战士。

他愉快地称自己是万能输血者,因为他是O型血。

他还拿出自己带来的荷兰纯牛乳,亲自到厨房煮牛奶,烤馒头片,端到重伤员面前。

看着他们吃下去,微笑浮在白求恩的脸上。

一次,给一个头部中弹后引起感染的伤员做手术,匆忙之中,他竟忘记戴橡皮手套。

切开头颅后,白求恩大夫赤手伸进去,用原已发炎的左手指去摸碎骨,摸到一片,像是考古学家突然在什么地方发现了甲骨文似的喜悦,他立即取出放在盘里,随即又用手指伸进去摸。

白求恩大夫的心只注意着伤员,为摸出的一片片碎骨的喜悦情绪占有了。

他总是得意地说:“又是一片!要是戴手套就摸不到了。

碎骨铁片取不出来,伤员是很难好的啊!”但是却不知,病员伤口里的细菌,也从白求恩大夫发炎手指的伤口处溜了进去,种下了导致他生命垂危的毒种。

白求恩除了做手术治疗之外,还亲自打字,画图,编写教材,给医务人员上课。

他曾经在幽静的丛林中,给三百多学生上大课。

他的讲台上放一个扩音机,身后挂着三大幅人体解剖图。

他一边讲,一边指着图表。
