1.阅读理解
Now some women are spending a weekend at Mother's Camp(营地). There, husbands and children are not allowed. Why would a woman want to take a vacation without her family? Some women say they need time to be alone.
At Mother's Camp a woman has room for herself. She can sleep, read or watch TV, and no one will bother her. No children will ask, “Mom, what's for dinner?” No husband will say, “Oh, dear, I can't find any clean socks.” In fact almost 50% of women in the United States work outside the home. Many of them work full-time and then come home for a second job—taking care of their homes and families. These working women say one of their biggest problems is housework.
In the United States, working wives do about 75% of the housework. Many of their husbands say they want to help. But then they burn the rice or they can't find the pans. They ask so many questions that their wives decide it is easier to do the job themselves.
Some women go to Mother's Camp just to get a break from housework. For two days they don't cook, they don't clean and they don't look after their children and husbands. What do they do?They enjoy warm, sunny weather, walking, swimming or boating in a clear blue lake and sing songs around the campfire. They relax away from home. They have a really wonderful vacation at Mother's Camp.

As a kid, I read a story of a bird. It described a male bird which takes a lot of pain to build a house and the female bird takes care of the baby in it. When the baby bird learns to fly, the whole family flies off to a different place leaving behind the beautiful nest for other birds to grow their family in it. It made me confused(困惑的):How could they so easily give up their house built with so much effort?
One night, I got this dream. I was walking on the endless road with beautiful trees on the either side. Attracted by the greenery, I went on, then I saw a wonderful house. I explored the house. There was a sloping(斜的) roof which matched with the greenery around; the large central open yard reminded me of the activities that might have taken place there which felt lively even now. The small water body that kept the house cool added to the beauty of the house — of course, it was all dried up now. Such liveliness turns the house into a home. People say “THE HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS”, and now I felt it and was attracted deeply.
When I woke up from the dream, I was clear about everything. I realized what message my dream wanted to convey(传递) me. And years later, when I chose my career, I thought of
the story of the bird and my dream, then I was sure what to do. I decided to choose architecture as my career. I wanted to do the same thing that the male bird in the story did, to take pain in building a beautiful house and let others stay in it. 3.阅读理解
After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him, so I agreed.
During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩症).When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, and then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming(克服)difficulties and going for my dreams.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Clearly, he knew what he was talking about. He didn't mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weight with me. When we finished talking, I pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming difficulties than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You won that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”
Last summer I received a letter from Matthew's parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before:
Dear Rick,
My mum said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don't have long to live any more, but I still smile as
much as I can.
I told you someday that I was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal, but I know now I will never get to do that. However, I know I'm a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me.
Your friend,
Matthew

9.阅读理解
I had an old neighbour, a doctor named Gibbs. When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He hardly watered his new trees.
Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants made them grow weaker. He said he had to make things difficult for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water.
So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the trees' attention.
Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Sometimes I walked by his house and looked at the trees I'd watched him plant 25 years ago. They were tall and strong.
I planted several trees myself a few years ago. Two years of caring for these trees meant they grew up weakly. Every time a cold wind blew, my trees shook. Adversity seemed to be good for Doctor Gibb's trees, they could never relax.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray(祈祷)that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to experience difficulties. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be separated.(1)What did Doctor Gibbs do to the trees he planted?
