The guy, without thinking about it, got in the car and closed the door and only then did he realize that there was nobody behind the steering wheel(方向盘)!
The car started to move very slowly. The guy looked at the road and saw a curve (拐弯) coming his way. Frightened, he started to pray, begging for his life. He had not come out of shock when, just before the car hit the curve, a hand suddenly appeared through the window and m oved the wheel. Millions of people from around the world pelted each other with tons of tomatoes Wednesday in the eastern Spanish town of Bunol. The one-hour bloodless battle, known as the Tomatina, left the town in a sea of tomato pulp(果肉).
The town council brought in some 100 tons of ripe tomatoes on trucks for around 40,000 tourists who came to the town of just 9,000 residents for the annual festival, which has taken place for more than 60 years.
Doyle, who serves in the army in Ireland, learned about the festival while vacationing in Spain and didn’t want to miss it. “I recommend it to everyone who wants to have a great time,” he said. “I’ll definitely come back.”
There were no reports of injuries in this year’s fight, said city coun cilor Pilar Garrigues. She said participants receive a list of recommendations on how to fight without
hurting anybody.
Lots of fighters take their red-soaked shirts off, and they are not supposed to throw them, just the fruit. Not is it considered fair to throw tomatoes that are a bit on the green side because they’re harder. And the red ones? Squeeze them first, please, to ease the pain.
More than 100 police and 120 civil protection volunteers were on hand in case of accidents. The “Tomatina” is held each year in Bunol, located in a fertile region some 40 kilometers north of the coastal city of Valencia, Spain’s third largest city, on the last Wednesday in August.
The origins of the event are unclear although it is thought to have its roots in a food fight between childhood friends in the mid-1940s in the city. It has grown in size as international press coverage brought more and more people to the festival.
63. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Different festivals in Spain.
B. The uses of tomatoes in Spain.
C. Popular festival ---the Tomatina.
D. Tourists’ attractions in Spain.
64. What does the underlined word “pelted” in the first sentence most probably mean?
A. Took care of
B. Threw at.
C. Laughed at.
D. Searched for.
65. From the passage we can infer that Doyle ____.
A. learned about the festival when he was in the army
B. heard of the festival while he was in Ireland
C. likes the festival very much.
D. takes part in most of the former festivals
66. Why did participants squeeze the tomatoes first?
A. To see if they are ripe.
B. To get the water out.
C. To make them harder.
D. Not to hurt others.
D
Whether you’re studying for a test, reviewing paperwork for your job, or trying to understand a journal article, reading comprehension is a valuable life school. Unfortunately, especially when the reading material is difficult, our reading comprehension might not be good enough. Learning to comprehend what you read means you waste less time and makes you more productive on the job or at school.
The things you already know are important in helping you understand things you’re going to learn. Before you begin reading something on a new topic, think about what you already know about it and how what you are reading might build upon that.
Since kindergarten, we’ve all been told to keep a dictionary nearby when reading, but few of us follow this advice. If you are not absolutely certain of the meaning of a word, look it up. It will not only make reading easier but also improve your vocabulary.
If you are reading especially challenging material, try taking notes. If you write while you are reading, reading will become boring and your comprehension will go downhill. Instead, make an outline at the end of each paragraph or sentence.
While speed reading is often used in some circles, and certainly has its place, it is generally a terrible method if you want to learn. Besides, speed reading will cost you more time because you will have to go back and review if you misunderstand what has been read. Focus on quality reading rather than quick reading, and take frequent breaks if you begin to get distracted.
When you read something boring, it’s easy to just read the words without understanding
what they mean. When this happens, just find a way to relate to the material. Write down questions, and surf the Internet for related information. Your comprehension will improve and you’ll be less likely to need reread.
67. It is implied(暗示) in the first paragraph that _____.
A.it’s easy to improve our reading ski lls
B.it’s important to improve our reading ability
C. we should train our reading ability at school
D. our reading habit plays an important role in our life
68. The author suggests in the second paragraph that we should_____.
A. forget what we have learned
B. pay attention to what we know
C. often focus on new topics
D. improve our reading speed
69. Which of the following things is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Keeping a dictionary.
B. Taking notes.
C. That speed reading is not always good.
D. Finding out all the uses of a word.
70. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Ways to improve reading comprehension.
B. The importance of changing your reading habit.
C. A good suggestion for those who are bad at reading.
D. The differences between quality reading and quick reading.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

选项中有两项为多余选项。

Expressions about water are almost as common as water. 71 .
The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression. “Hot water” was used five hundred years ago to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of extremely throwing hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.
When we are in “hot water”, we are in trouble. 72 . A young boy can be in hot water with his mother, if he comes into the house with dirty shoes.
“To keep your head above water” is a colorful expression that means staying out of debt. A company seeks to keep its head above water during economic hard times. A man who loses his job tries to keep his head above water until he finds a new job.
Another common expression, “to hold water”, is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. If it can hold water, it is strong and has no holes in it. If your argument can hold water, 73 . If it does not hold water, 74 .
“Throwing cold water” is also an expression that deals with ideas or proposals. _ 75 . For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But your wife “throws cold water” on the idea, beca use she says a new car costs too much.
A. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.
B. You are in a difficult position
C. A person who breaks a law can be in hot water with the police.
D. It means disliking an idea.
E. It is strong and does not have any holes.

范文:
Dear Tom,
How is everything going?
I’m writing to share with y ou my unforgettable experience of sports meeting held last month.
Before the meeting, my teacher and classmates made a detailed plan. We were all very excited to give advice and provide anything needed. At the same time, the athletes made full preparations, running and jumping in their spare time. During the meeting, the athletes competed fairly in the playground with the other students cheering around. What a great time!
I think our class has become more united after the sports meeting. In addition, the classmates know more about each other and become closer. As a result, we are more hopeful of the colorful school life.
I would appreciate it if you could reply soon.
Truly yours

Did you just press a button on your phone to check if you have received any text? Are the others around you busy texting, listening to music or surfing the Internet on their phones? I believe that cell phones are one of the greatest inventions by humans, which have changed the way world citizens communicate and express themselves. 71 That’s what I am going to discuss in the following paragraphs.
The world has become a smaller place due to cell phones. Do you have a friend or a loved one who has moved away from you? 72 Crossing over the seven seas to speak to a loved one is now child’s play. About ten years ago making international calls was a big deal and a matter of great expense. Cheaper calls have made communication more affordable and efficient.
The Internet was previously limited to a computer. 73 Nowadays, who needs a newspaper to learn about what’s happening in the world? Your cell phone is your most trusted and portable encyclopedia(百科全书).
74 You can listen to songs, read books, access social networking sites and play games --- all on your phone. It has in fact changed our very way of life. From paying for your food, shopping bills and credit cards, to measuring temperature, checking the weather
forecast, and even taking pictures and videos, painting, playing your favorite instrument virtually, they’re all what cell phones have.
Phones have practically become an important source (来源) of spending time. When you have nothing to do or no one is with you, all you need is your phone to be your companion. Just pick up your phone and you can listen to songs, watch movies, call up a friend, check your emails or your accounts, click photos, and play games. 75
A.Phone numbers have become personal identities.
B.It’s no prob lem staying in touch with them anymore.
C.With all these functions why would one need anything else?
D.Cell phones, especially smart phones, have everything you need.
E.Do you want to know how the cell phone has changed our society?
F. A recent survey has shown that cell phones are changing the young minds away from reality.
G.However, it can be accessed by phones now, which has made the spread of knowledge and
information easy and quick.
