rather/ 'rɑ:ðə/
adv. fairly 相当；宁可。

常用于形容词或副词前。

The book is rather long.这本书有点长。

He speaks English rather badly.他英语说得相当差。

辨析rather, fairly
(1) rather 多用于不好的方面，表示令人“相当”不高兴；fairly多用于好的方面，表示令人“相当地”高兴。

Tom did rather terrible in the final exam.汤姆在期末考试中做的相当差。

China is fairly big and beautiful.中国相当大而且漂亮。

（2）rather 可以和比较级及too连用，而fairly则不能。

This car is rather larger than that one. 这辆车比那辆车要大许多。

This question is rather too difficult.这个问题太难了。

（3）不定冠词a/an 放在rather 的前面或后面均可，但只能放在fairly 之前，我们可以说a rather interesting story, rather an interesting story 或a fairly interesting story,但没有fairly an interesting story的说法。

固定搭配would rather do A than do B 宁愿做A而不愿做B。

I would rather stay at home than go out with you .我宁愿待在家里也不愿和你外出。

shower/ 'ʃauə/
n. brief fall of rain ,sleet or hail; wash in or under this 阵雨；淋浴。

I was caught in a shower yesterday.昨天我遇见了阵雨，
拓展shower v.下阵雨；洗淋浴。

Suddenly it began to shower.突然下起了阵雨。

I showered and then went to bed.我洗了个淋浴然后就去睡觉了。

固定搭配take a shower/have a shower 洗淋浴。

I took a shower last night.
= I had a shower last night.我昨晚洗了个淋浴。

rise/ raiz /
v. (rose/ risen) come or go upwards; (of the sun, moon, etc.)appear above the horizon 升起；上升。

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.太阳从东方升起，西方落下。

The river has risen (by) several metres.河水上涨了好几米。

拓展rise n.上升；增加；上涨。

The workers demand a pay rise from now on .工人们要求从现在起加薪。

set/ set/
v. (set/set) (of the sun, moon or stars) go down below the horizon落下。

反义词为rise.
In Britain the sun sets much later in summer than in winter .在英国，夏季日落时间比冬季晚得多。

We sat there and watched the sun setting.我们坐在那里看日落。

拓展（1）set v.摆放；放置。

The desks were set in the classroom.课桌在教室里放着。

（2）set v.设定。

My mother set the alarm clock for 5 AM.我妈妈把闹钟定在早上五点。
