She is a cute, quiet girl. As a daughter, she has no secrets from her mother, who is very pleased with her. But recently she has become somewhat mysterious, and not
so open as before. She has a diary that she keeps under lock and key. Her mother can’t help worrying about her: what if she falls in love, which is too early for a girl of her age? After all, she is reaching the “dangerous stage”. These thoughts have caused trouble in the mother’s mind.
One weekend the girl came to tell her mother that she was going to the cinema with her schoolmate and would return late. As this was the first time, her mother agreed, but she couldn’t help worrying because her daughter had never been away at night before. The mother waited till nine and decided to go out to meet her daughter. Just at that moment the noise
of a car pulling up drew her to the window and there was her daughter, waving goodbye to a boy. Her heart missed a beat. When the girl came in, the mother was watching TV, pretending nothing had happened. “Mom, I’m back.” “Yeah.”“Sorry to be late. Still sitting up?”“Yes, oh, that… who’s that boy?” The daughter was silent for a moment. “Ah. It’s my monitor. He gave me a lift on his way home. Mom, I’m going to bed.”“All right. Go to sleep early.”
Next morning when the mother went to the daughter’s room to do some cleaning, she found her diary left at her pillow. Finally she opened it. It read: Mom, it’s love that made you ask, but it would show your understanding of me if you hadn’t.

If you have ever been discouraged because of failure, please read on. Usually, achieving what you set out to do is not the important thing. Let me explain.
Two brothers decided to dig a deep hole behind their house. As they were working, several older boys stopped by to watch.
“What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors.
“We plan to dig a hole all the way through the earth!”one of the brothers answered excitedly.
The older boys began to laugh, telling the younger ones that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a long silence, one of the diggers picke d up a bottle full of spiders and insects. He removed the lid(盖子) and showed the wonderful contents to the visitors who were laughing at them. Then he said quietly and confidently, “Even
if we don’t dig all the way through the earth, look at what we found along the way!”
Their goal was far too difficult, but it made them big. And that is what a goal is for—to make us move in the direction we have chosen. In other words, it sets us digging!
But not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end successfully. Not every hope will come to pass. Not every love will last. But when you fall short of your aim, perhaps you can say, “Yes, but look at what I found along the way! Look at the wonderful things which have come into my life because I tried to do something!” And I believe it is the joy in the journey, in the end, that truly matters.

B. Where there is a will, there is a way
C. No pains, no gains
D. Joy in the journey

Many people think that the most popular way of communicating with other people is through the mouth. But what they don’t know is that actual communication using mouth accounts for only around 10% (or even less) of all the means to communicate a message.
Moreover, you can never determine the honesty of people by what they say alone. In fact, words expressed through mouth do not reflect what people really think or feel. The only way you can determine their true inner feelings and thoughts is by reading their body language.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you can “see through”the emotions of other people? For example, you ask a person if he can do an important task. He says “OK”. But deep inside, you are questioning yourself, “Is he really willing to do this job?”or “Does he have the confidence to finish this task?”You can’t question him directly because that would be like belittling him. And even if you ask him those questions, his replies will not tell you what he really feels or thinks.
Then what is the final solution? Here are just a few of the magic tricks you’re about to discover:
◆Actions to make someone like or trust you.
◆How to win in a negotiation(谈判).
◆How to attract the opposite sex using body language.
◆How to increase your sales using body language.
◆How to help you find out who is telling a lie.
And a lot, lot more!
Body language is very easy and fun to learn. With this book, you will make body movements to achieve the success you’ve always longed for. Do yourself a big favor and get a copy of Body Language Magic.
27. According to the passage, people communicate with each other mainly by _____.
A. speaking
B. using body language
C. writing letters
D. the passage doesn’t tell us
28. The underlined word “belittling”in the 4th paragraph can be replaced by _____.

29. We can learn from the passage that body language is helpful in the following ways EXCEPT ______.
A. it makes other people believe you
B. it can decide your success
C. it makes you better understood
D. it shows whether someone is honest
30. The main purpose of the passage is ______.
A. to attract people to buy a book

根据第二段中先后出现的“the girl came to tell her mother that she was going to the cinema with her schoolmate”,“but she couldn’t help worrying because her daughter had never been away at night before.”和“the noise of a car pulling up drew her to the window and there was her daughter, waving goodbye to a boy”及第三段中的“she found h er diary left at her pillow. Finally she opened it.”

a, b, c, d的正确顺序为b, d, a, c。

选择A项。

22.B

根据第一段中的“But recently she has become somewhat mysterious, and not so open as before. She has a diary that she keeps under lock and key. Her mother can’t help worrying about her…These thoughts have caused trouble in the mother’s mind.”

“What the daughter did recently had worried her moth er.”

23.A

根据文章最后的“It read: Mom, it’s love that made you ask, but it would show your understanding of me if you hadn’t. Holding the diary, the mother fell into thought.”

“care about what their children really think and feel”符合语境。

选择A项。

根据第三段中的“one of the diggers picked up a bottle full of spiders and insects. He removed the lid and showed the wonderful contents to the visitors who were laughing at them”可知,有一个挖洞的人捡起了一个装满着蜘蛛和昆虫的瓶子,他把瓶盖去掉后,让嘲笑的人看看他们挖到的好东西。

25.C

根据倒数第二段中的“Their goal was far too difficult, but it made them big. And that is what a goal is for—to make us move in the direction we have chosen. In other words, it sets us digging!”

“a goal is something that we have chosen and want to achieve”符合语境。

选择C项。

26.D

根据最后一段中的“But when you fall short of your aim, perhaps you can say, ‘Yes, but look at what I found along th e way! Look at the wonderful things which have come into my life because I tried to do something!’ And I believe it is the joy in the journey, in the end, that truly matters.”

“Joy in the journey”

根据第一段中的“Many people think that the most popular way of communicating with other people is through the mouth. But what they don’t know is that actual communication using mouth accounts for only around 10% (or even less) of all the means to communicate a message.”

“the passage doesn’t tell us”符合语境。

选择D项。

28.A

根据第四段中的“you ask a person if he can do an important task. He says ‘OK’. But deep inside, you are questioning yourself, ‘Is he really willing to do this job?’ or ‘Does he have the confidence to finish this task?’ You can’t question him directly because that would be like belittling him.”

选择A项。
