Jenny's Awesome Weekend
Jenny was so excited when the school bell rang on Friday afternoon. The weekend had finally arrived! She raced home from school, breathing in the warm spring air. Jenny had been looking forward to this weekend for a long time.
As soon as she got home, Jenny dropped her backpack and ran out to the backyard. Her dad was already there, setting up the tent they would be sleeping in. "Can I help, Daddy?" Jenny asked eagerly.
Her dad smiled and handed her some tent poles. "Sure thing, peanut. Just be careful with those poles." Jenny carefully pushed the poles through the fabric sleeves as her dad hammered in the stakes. Before long, their cozy little tent was all set up.
That evening after dinner, Jenny and her parents roasted marshmallows around the backyard firepit. Jenny got her marshmallow a perfect golden brown. As she took a big bite, the warm, gooey sweetness exploded in her mouth. Camping was the best!
The next morning, Jenny woke up early to the sounds of chirping birds. She unzipped the tent and stepped outside,
squinting in the bright sunshine. Her parents were still snoring away. Giggling to herself, Jenny tiptoed over to the little creek that ran behind their backyard. She spent a peaceful hour watching tadpoles wiggle in the shallow water and listening to the babbling creek.
After a pancake breakfast cooked over the camp stove, the family packed a picnic lunch and all their fishing gear into the truck. They drove out to Jenny's favorite fishing pond at the state park. As her dad helped her bait her hook, Jenny wrinkled her nose at the slimy worm. But she knew the fish would really like it.
Jenny sat patiently for a long time, watching her bobber float motionless on the glassy surface of the pond. Just when she started to get bored, her bobber suddenly plunged under the water! Jenny shrieked with delight as she pulled hard on her rod.
A big fish kicked and thrashed in the water at the end of her line. With her dad's help, she finally pulled it up onto the grassy bank. They had caught their first fish of the day!
Over the next few hours, Jenny caught three more fish that went straight into their cooler. Her mom fried up the fresh fillets for their picnic lunch, dredged in cornmeal and fried crispy and golden brown. Jenny thought they were the most delicious fish she'd ever tasted. Full of good food and worn out from the
excitement of the day's catch, Jenny nodded off for a nap under a shady tree.
That evening after they got back home, Jenny's dad built another warm fire in the backyard. They all roasted hot dogs and made s'mores for dessert. Jenny's favorite part was tucking a toasted marshmallow and a few chocolate chips inside two graham crackers. The melty chocolate was heavenly. As twilight fell, they all gazed up at the stars just starting to twinkle in the indigo sky. Jenny spotted a few bright planets too.
On Sunday morning, it was time to take down the tent. As her dad carefully folded it up, Jenny collected all the tent stakes. Soon their backyard looked just like normal again. But the weekend had created so many magical memories for Jenny to keep forever.
After they finished packing up all their camping gear, Jenny's family drove into town for pancakes at their favorite diner. Thick, fluffy pancakes drenched in sticky maple syrup - what a treat! While they ate, Jenny's parents asked her favorite parts of their backyard camping adventure. She had so many highlights to share, from catching fish to roasting marshmallows.
On the drive back home, Jenny felt a little sad that their fun weekend was over. But she couldn't wait to go camping again
soon. Maybe next time they could even camp out in the woods instead of just their backyard! Jenny grinned and pressed her face against the car window, already dreaming about their next outdoor adventure.。
