2019年12月英语六级阅读理解100篇:美籍华人的历史

2019年12月英语六级阅读理解100篇:美籍华人的历史The History of Chinese AmericansChinese have been in the United States for almost two hundred years. In fact. the Chinese had business relations with Hawaii prior to relations with the mainland when Hawaii was not yet part of the United States. But United States investments controlled the capital of Hawaii at that time. In 1788,a ship sailed from Guangzhou to Hawaii. Most of the crewmen were Chinese. They were considered the pioneers of Hawaii. The Immigration Commission reported that the first Chinese arrived in the United States in 1820. eight in 1830 andseven hundred and eighty in 1850. The Chinese population gradually increased and reached 64,199 in 1870.For many years it was common in the United States to associate Chinese Americans with restaurants and laundries. People did not realize that the Chinese had been driven into these occupations by the prejudice anddiscrimination that faced them in this country. The First Chinese to reach the mainland United States came during the California Gold Rush of 1849. Like most of the other people there, they had come to search for gold.In that largely unoccupied land, the men staked a claim for themselves by placing markers in the ground. However. either because the Chinese were sodifferent from the others or because they worked so patiently that they sometimes succeeded in turning a seemingly worthless mining claim into a profitable one, they became che scapegoats of their envious competitors. They were harassed in many ways. Often they were prevented from working their claims; some localities even passed regulations forbidding them to own claims. The Chinese therefore started to seek out other ways of earning a living. Some of them began to do che laundry for the white miners; others set up small restaurants. (There were almost no women in California in those days, and the Chinese filled a real need by doing this“woman's work”.) Some went to work as farmhands or as fishermen. In the early 1860's many more Chincse arrived in California. This time the men were imported as work crews to construct the first transcontinental railroad. They were sorely needed because the work was so strenuousand dangerous, and it was carried on in such a remote part of the country that the railroad company could not find other laborers for the job. As in the case of their predecessors, these Chinese were almost all males; and like them, too, they encountered a great deal of prejudice. The hostility grew especiallystrong afrer the railroad project was complete, and the imported laborers returned to California-thousands of them, all out of work. Because there were so many more of them this time, these Chinese drew even more attention than the earlier group did. They were so very different in every respect: in their physical appearance, including a long“pigtail”at the back of their otherwise shaved heads; in the strange, non-Western clothes they wore; in their speech (few had learned English since they planned to go back to China); and in their religion. They were contemptuously called “heathen Chinese” because there were many sacred images in their houses of worship. When times were hard. they were blamed for working for lower wages and taking jobs away from white men. who were in many cases recent immigrants themselves. Anti-Chinese riots broke out in several cities. culminating in arson and bloodshed. Chinese were barred from using the courts and also from becoming American citizens. Californians began to demand that no more Chinese be permitted to enter their state. Finally. in 1882. they persuaded Congress to pass the Chinese Exclusion Act, which stopped the immigration of Chinese laborers. Many Chinese rerurned to their homeland, and their numbers declined sharply in the early part of this century. However. during the World War II,when China was an ally ofthe United States. the Exclusion laws were ended; a small number of Chinese were allowed to immigrate each year, and Chinese could become American citizens. In 1965, in a general revision of our immigration laws, may more Chinese were permitted to settle here,as discrimination against Asian immigration was abolished.。

People keep telling me that the hill has been moved, and I keep telling them that the high-jump bar has dropped from the six feet I once easily cleared to the four feet that is impossible for me now.“Your are not getting older, you are getting better.” says Dr. Joyce Brothers. This, however, is the kind of doctor who inspires a second opinion. And so, as I approach the day when I cannot even jump over the tennis net. I am moved to share some thoughts on aging with you. I am moved to show how aging feels to me physically and mentally. Getting older, of course, is obviously a better change than the one that brings you eulogies (悼词). In fact, a poet named Robert Browning considered it the best change of all:Grow old along with me!The best is yet to be.Whether or not Browning was right, most of my first fifty years have been golden ones, so I will settle for what is ahead being as good as what has gone by. I find myself moving toward what is ahead with a curious blend of both fighting and accepting my aging, hoping that the philosopher was right when he said. “Old is always fifteen years from now.”1. What does the author seems to tell us in Paragraph 1?A. Time alone will tell.B. Time goes by quickly.C. Time will show what is right.D. Time makes one forget the past.2. How did people around him respond when the author turned fifty?A. They tried to comfort him.B. They got inspiration with him.C. They were friendlier with him.D. They found him more talkative.3. How does the author consider his fifty years of life?A. Peaceful.B. Ordinary.C. Satisfactory.D. Regretful.4. What can we infer from the passage?A. The old should lead a simple life.B. The old should face the fact of aging.C. The old should take more exercise.D. The old should fill themselves with curiosity.答案:1-4 BACB2LOS ANGELES, Nov. 12 (Xinhua)—Legendary comic book writer Stan Lee has died at the age of 95, according to media reports on Monday.Lee, born in Stanley Lieber on Dec. 28, 1922, began his career in 1939 and joined the Marvel Comics in 1961.He is considered as one of the most legendary names in the history of comic books and the leading creative force behind the rise of Marvel Comics. He co-created iconic fictional characters such as Spider-Man, X-Men, the Avengers, and many more.Lee’s characters often have super powers, but they also have weaknesses. They were humans, not gods. They not only struggled to save the world, but also to pay their bills, make friends, and hold jobs. This made Marvel comic book heroes stand apart from its competitor DC, which produced the seemingly perfect heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman. Those superheroes have been adapted into blockbuster films, most of which were made after Disney acquired Marvel in a 4-billion-dollar deal in 2009.In a statement, Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company said Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created.Marvel also praised Lee on its website by putting on one of Lee’s famous quotes, which goes, “I used to be embarrassed because I was just a comic-book writer while other people were building bridges or going on to medical careers. And then I began to realize: entertainment is one of the most important things in people’s lives. Without it, they might go off the deep end.I feel that if you’re able to entertain, you’re doing a good thing. ”Praise from his Hollywood peers and colleagues was generous. President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige appreciated Lee’s unparalleled impact on the industry. “No one has had more of an impact on my career than Stan Lee,” Feige said. “Our thoughts are with his family and the millions of fans who have been forever touched by Stan’s genius, charisma and heart.”5. How do Lee’s characters differ from those of DC?A. They are perfect heroes.B. They often have super powers.C. They are not humans, but gods.D. They have human shortcomings.6. 2021年高考英语二轮专题复习《阅读理解》09(含答案)

2021年高考英语二轮专题复习《阅读理解》09A1.Rock music in one form or another is the most popular type of music all over the world. But where did it come from?Rock began in the USA in the early 1950s. At that time, “rhythm and blue”music was very popular with black Americans. “R&B” was a mixture of black religious music and jazz. It had strong rhythms that you could dance to and simple, fast words.Noticing the success of R&B music, white musicians started to copy the same style.By the mid-1950s, this new white R&B music, called rock ’n’ roll, had become very popular. Singers like Elvis Presley and Bill Haley attracted millions of teenage fans. Their music was fast and loud. Many older people thought that rock ’n’ roll was very dangerous.By the early 1960s, even rock ’n’ roll had become old-fashioned. Many of the songs had begun to sound the same. It was at that time that a new group from England became popular — the Beatles. The Beatles first started by singing American style songs, but they soon developed their own style, with more complicated tunes. They also introduced different instruments. Groups like the Beatles had a very important influence on the style of popular music.By the early 1970s, rock ’n’ roll had develope d into a new form of music.Electronics had replaced the amplified guitars and drums of rock ’n’ roll.“Rock” had arrived.Rock music had continued to change and develop. He thought that although relative needs may indeed be insatiable(无止境的),this is not true of absolute needs.Keynes was surely correct that only a small part of total spending is decided by the desire for superiority. He was greatly mistaken, however, in seeing this desire as the only source of insatiable demands.Decisions to spend are also driven by ideas of quality which can influence the demand for almost all goods, including even basic goods like food. When a couple goes out for an anniversary dinner, for example, the thought of feeling superior to others probably never comes to them. Their goal is to share a special meal that stands out from other meals. There are no obvious limits to the escalation of demands for quality. For example, Porsche, a famous car producer, has a model which was considered perhaps the best sports car on the market. Priced at over $120, 000, it handles perfectly well and has great speed acceleration. But in 2004, the producer introduced some changes which made the model slightly better in handling and acceleration. People who really care about cars find these small improvements exciting. To get them, however, they must pay almost four times the price.By placing the desire to be superior to others at the heart of his description of insatiable demands, Keynes actually reduced such demands. However, the desire for higher quality has no natural limits.(1)According to the passage,John Keynes believed that .A.desire is the root of both absolute and relative needsB.absolute needs come from our sense of superiorityC.relative needs alone lead to insatiable demandsD.absolute needs are stronger than relative needs(2)What do we know about the couple in Paragraph 3?A.They want to show their superiority.B.They find specialty important to meals.C.Their demands for food are not easily satisfied.D.Their choice of dinner is related to ideas of quality.(3)What does the underlined word“escalation”in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A. Understanding.B. Increase.C.Difference.D. Study.(4)The author of the passage argues that .A.absolute needs have no limitsB.demands for quality are not insatiableC.human desires influence ideas of qualityD.relative needs decide most of our spendingD4.Our “Mommy and Me” time began two years ago.My next-door neighbor and fellow mother, Christie, and I were out in our front yards, watching seven children of age 6 and under ride their bikes up and down.“I wish I could take one of my children out alone,” said Christie. Then we worked out a plan: When Christie takes one of her children out, I’ll watch her other three. And when she watches two of mine, I’ll take someone out.The children were extremely quick to accept the idea of “Mommy and Me”time.Christie’s daughter, McKenzie, went first. When she returned, the other children showered her with tons of questions.McKenzie was smiling broadly.Christie looked refreshed and happy.“She’s like a different child when there’s no one else around,”Christie shared with me quietly. With her mother all to herself, McKenzie didn’t have to make an effort to gain attention.Just as Christie had noticed changes in McKenzie, I also discovered something different in each of my children during our alone times. For example, I am always surprised when my daughter, who is seldom close to me, holds my hand frequently. My stuttering (口吃) son, Tom, doesn’t stutter once during our activities since he doesn’t have to struggle for a chance to speak. And the other son, Sam, who’s alwaysa follower when around other children shines as a leader during our times together. The “Mommy and Me” time allows us to be simply alone and away with each child -talking, sharing, and laughing, which has been the biggest gain.Every child deserves (应得到) to be an only child at least once in a while.(1)What is the text mainly about?A.The experience of the only child being with mother.B.The advantage of spending time with one child at a time.C.The happy life of two families.D.The basic needs of children.(2)Right after McKenzie came back, the other children were ______.A.happyB.curiousC.regretfulD.friendly(3)What is one of the changes the author finds in her children?A.The daughter acts like a leader.B.Sam holds her hand more often.C.The boys become better followers.D.Tom has less difficulty in speaking.(4)The author seems to believe that ______.A.having brothers and sisters is funB.it’s tiring to look after three childrenC.every child needs parents’ full attentionD.parents should watch others’ childrenE5.Parents'meetings may be your worst nightmare (噩梦).However, that's not always the case. The parents'meeting we had after our mid﹣term examinations, for instance, couldn't have been more surprising.Sitting in our chairs next to our parents,we felt like we were on pins and needles, expecting a final outburst when they examined our grades and rankings. However, our teacher came to our rescue. He told our parents the stress we faced in our daily school lives and how hard we had worked for the college entrance examination."No matter the score, they all studied very hard and each one of them has madeprogress. They deserve encouragement rather than blame,"he said. When they heard these words, many parents nodded, their anger gone.Well,to be honest,we hadn't worked that hard before the meeting, but we decided we would try our best to live up to our teacher's expectations after it.Another highlight of this parents'meeting was when our parents read our letters that we had written in advance. In our daily lives,we are so busy doing homework and preparing for exams that we hardly have time to communicate with our parents.Yet this parents'meeting gave us an opportunity to show our appreciation. In the letters,we expressed our love for them and gratitude for everything they had done for us.Many parents burst into tears after reading their children's letters. So you see,our parents'meetings may not be as bad as we think. They could be opportunities to bring us closer to our parents.(1)What does the underlined phrase"on pins and needles"(in Para 2)mean?A.Restless.B.Proud.C.Curious.D.Sleepy.(2)How did many parents feel before they heard the teacher's words?A.Excited.B.Stressful.C.Disappointed.D.Angry.(3)Who was moved most during the meeting?A.Students.B.Parents.C.Our teacher.D.Our headmaster.(4)Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.The parents will try to live up to the teacher's expectations.B.The parent meeting brought the teacher and our parents closer.C.The parent meeting was held after the college entrance examination.D.The teacher showed great concern and understanding for the students.F6.阅读下面的短文,完成下列各题:What is small talk? His strange habit makes sense when you consider that he’s an environmental scientist who studies how to reduce litter, including things that fall off garbage trucks as they drive down the road. What is even more interesting is that one of Stein's jobs is defending an industry behind the plastic shopping bag.Americans use more than 100 billion thin film plastic bags every year. So many end up in tree branches or along highways that a growing number of cities do not allow them at checkouts(收银台) . The bags are prohibited in some 90 cities in California, including Los Angeles. Eyeing these headwinds, plastic-bag makers are hiring scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people assume.Among the bag makers' argument: many cities with bans still allow shoppers to purchase paper bags, which are easily recycled but require more energy to produce and transport. And while plastic bags may be ugly to look at, they represent a small percentage of all garbage on the ground today. The industry has also taken aim at the product that has appeared as its replacement: reusable shopping bags. The stronger a reusable bag is, the longer its life and the more plastic-bag use it cancels out. However, longer-lasting reusable bags often require more energy to make. One study found that a cotton bag must be used at least 131 times to be better for the planet than plastic.Environmentalists don't dispute(质疑) these points. They hope paper bags will be banned someday too and want shoppers to use the same reusable bags for years.(1)What has Steven Stein been hired to do?A.Help increase grocery sales.B.Recycle the waste material.C.Stop things falling off trucks.D.Argue for the use of plastic bags.(2)What does the word “headwinds”in paragraph 2 refer to?A.Bans on plastic bags.B.Effects of city development.C.Headaches caused by garbage.D.Plastic bags hung in trees.(3)What is a disadvantage of reusable bags according to plastic-bag makers?A.They are quite expensive.B.Replacing them can be difficult.C.They are less strong than plastic bags.D.Producing them requires more energy.(4)What is the best title for the text?A.Plastic, Paper or NeitherB.Industry, Pollution and EnvironmentC.Recycle or Throw AwayD.Garbage Collection and Waste ControlH8.Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, distance of about eighty miles. It was late.Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I became increasingly impatient. At one point along an open road, I came to a crossing with a traffic light.I was alone on the road by now, but as I drove near the light, it turned red and I made a stop.I looked left, right and behind me.Nothing.Not a car, no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of beingcaught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.Much later that night, the question of why I’d stopped for that light came back to me.I think I stopped because it’s part of a contract(契约)we all have with each other. It’s not only the law, but it’s an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don’t go through red lights.Trust is our first inclination(倾向).Doubting others does not seem to be natural to us.The whole construction of our society depends on mutual(相互)trust, not distrust. We do what we say we’ll do; we show up when we say we’ll show up; and we pay when we say we’ll pay.We trust each other in these matters, and we’re angry or disappointed with the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them.I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.(1)Why did the author get impatient while driving?A.He was lonely on the road.B.He was slowed down by a truck.C.He got tired of driving too long.D.He came across too many traffic lights.(2)What was the author’s immediate action when the traffic light turned red?A.Stopping still.B.Driving through it.C.Looking around for other cars.D.Checking out for traffic police.(3)The event made the author strongly believe that .A.traffic rules may be unnecessaryB.doubting others is human natureC.patience is important to driversD.a society needs mutual trust(4)Why was the author proud of himself?A.He kept his promise.B.He held back his anger.C.He followed his inclination.D.He made a right decision.参考答案1.答案及解析:答案:(1)A; (2)C; (3)B; (4)B解析:(1)细节理解题。

That’s a far different image from the cherry-tree-chopping George most people remember from their history books. But recently, many historians have begun to focus on the roles slavery played in the lives of the founding generation.①They have been spurred in part by DNA evidence made available in 1998, which almost certainly proved Thomas Jefferson had fathered at least one child with his slave Sally Hemings. And only over the past 30 years have scholars examined history from the bottom up. Works of several historians reveal the moral compromises made by the nation’s early leaders and the fragile nature of the country’s infancy. More significantly, they argue that many of the Founding Fathers knew slavery was wrong – and yet most did little to fight it..这跟很多人在历史书上读到过的那个砍樱桃树的华盛顿有点大相径庭。

2011考研英语阅读新题型(7选5)模拟题及解析

2011考研英语阅读新题型(7选5)模拟题及解析Directions:You are going to read a list of headings and a text about preparing in the academic community. Choose the most suitable heading from the list A-G for each numbered paragraph (41-45). The first and last paragraphs of the text are not numbered. There is one extra heading which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points) Long before Man lived on the Earth, there were fishes, reptiles, birds, insects, and some mammals. Although some of these animals were ancestors of kinds living today, others are now extinct, that is, they have no descendants alive now.41 Very occasionally the rocks show impression of skin, so that, apart from color, we can build up a reasonably accurate picture of an animal that died millions of years ago. That kind of rock in which the remains are found tells us much about the nature of the original land, often of the plants that grew on it, and even of its climate.42 Nearly all of the fossils that we know were preserved in rocks formed by water action, and most of these are of animals that lived in or near water. Thus it follows that there must be many kinds of mammals, birds, and insects of which we know noting.43 There were also crablike creatures, whose bodies were covered with a horny substance. The body segments each had two pairs of legs, one pair for walking on the sandy bottom, the other for swimming. The head was a kind of shield with a pair of compound eyes, often with thousands of lenses. They were usually an inch or two long but some were 2 feet.44 Of these, the ammonites are very interesting and important. They have a shell composed of many chambers , each representing a temporary home of the animal. As the young grew larger itgrew a new chamber and sealed off the previous one. Thousands of these can be seen in the rocks on the DorsetCoast.45 About 75 million years ago the Age of Reptiles was over and most of the groups diedout .The mammals quickly developed, and we can trace the evolution of many familiar animals such as the elephant and horse. Many of the later mammals though now extinct, were known to primitive man and were featured by him in cave paintings and on bone carvings.[A] The shellfish have a long history in the rock and many different kinds are known.[B] Nevertheless, we know a great deal about many of them because their bones and shells have been preserved in the rocks as fossils, from them we can tell their size and shape, how they walked, the kind of food they ate.[C] The first animals with true backbones were the fishes, first known in the rocks of 375 million years ago. About 300 million years ago the amphibians, the animals able to live both on land and in water, appeared. They were giant, sometimes 8 feet long, and many of them lived in the swampy pools in which our coal seam, or layer is formed. The amphibians gave rise to the reptiles and for nearly 150 million years these were the principal forms of life on land, in the sea, and in the air.[D] The best index fossils tend to be marine creatures. These animals evolved rapidly and spread over large over large areas of the world.[E] The earliest animals whose remains have been found were all very simple kinds and lived in the sea. Later forms are more complex, and among these are the sea lilies, relations of the star fishes, which had long arms and were attached by a long stalk to the sea bed, or to rocks.[F] When an animal dies, the body, its bones, or shell, may often be carried away by streams into lakes or the sea and there get covered up by mud. If the animal lived in the sea its body would probably sink and be covered with mud. More and more mud would fall upon it until the bones or shell become embedded and preserved.[G] Many factors can influence how fossils are preserved in rocks. Remains of an organism may be replaced by minerals, dissolved by an acidic solution to leave only their impression, or simply reduced to a more stable form.答案详解41.【解析】[B]从试题前后的语义逻辑关系来看,试题前面的一段话表明的信息是Although some of these animals were ancestors of kinds living today, others are now extinct, that is, they have no descendants alive now(尽管这些动物是某些活到现在的物种的祖先,但有的动物却灭绝了,也就是说它们现在已经没有子孙后代活在这个世界上)。

英语六级阅读理解精练及答案解析

英语六级阅读理解精练及答案解析英语六级阅读理解精练:个人主义的典范What do Americans believe in2? What is the American character? These questions are hard toanswer, because there are so many Americans and they believe in so many different things. However, the history of the United States does provide some understanding of certain basiccharacteristics that many Americans share .One of the main reasons why the early settlers came to America was to escape the controlsthey had experienced in Europe. 3 There , small groups of wealthy people prevented themfrom moving into a higher social position or becoming wealthy, and governmentsupportedchurches controlled their religious practices and beliefs. Because these early settlers wanted tobe free from such controls, they brought to America the view that the individual was supremelyimportant. The settlers were against the efforts of the church, the society, and particularly thegovernment, to control their actions. These controls came to be viewed as"un-American"4 .This strong American belief in individualism has both positive and negative sides5 . On thepositive side, it has strengthened Americansrsquo;inventiveness and their belief in hard work. Onthe negative side, the belief in individualism has sometimes prevented Americans from usingtheir government to solve their common problems. Americans prefer not to have governmentsolutions to social problems. The belief in individualism is a basic part of the American character. This belief has at leasttwo separate parts mdash; idealism and materialism6. Although these two beliefs are quitedifferent, most Americans try to live with them both at the same time, and idealism andmaterialism are both very much a part of the American character.American idealism comes largely from the nationrsquo;s Protestant7 religious heritage . EarlyAmericans did not have to belong to any particular church to have this belief. It influenced allAmericans so strongly that idealism came to mean that each individual should possess a highmoral character, and should live by his or her own beliefs. This is what American idealismmeans today.Americans also have a strong belief in materialism, that is, that each individual should gain asmuch wealth as possible. The American belief in materialism is partly a result of the nationrsquo;sgreat material abundance. The early settlers found a continent with great forests, rivers, andfertile farmland in abundance. It is not surprising that many viewed America as the land ofopportunity. 8As the United States grew and developed, the supply of natural resources seemed endless, andso did the opportunities for personal economic advancement. Each generation had a chance tobecome wealthier than their parents had been. Generation after generation of new immigrantshad the same opportunity. Americans eventually developed the belief that it was almost aduty to get rich.阅读自测Ⅰ. Here a re some new sports words that people often use in daily life .
