Blackmail 敲诈Arthur Hailey--阿瑟•黑利○1The chief house officer, Ogilvie, who had declared he would appear at the Croydons suite an hour after his cryptic telephone call actually took twice that time. As a result the nerves of both the Duke and Duchess were excessively frayed when the muted buzzer of the outer door eventually sounded.

○2The Duchess went to the door herself. Earlier she had dispatched her maid on an invented errand and, cruelly, instructed the moon-faced male secretary – who was terrified of dogs – to exercise the Bedlington terriers. Her own tension was not lessened by the knowledge that both might return at any moment.

Mark Twain-the Mirror of America1 Most Americans remember Mark Twain as the father of Huck Finn's idyllic cruise through eternal boyhood and Tom Sawyer's endless summer of freedom and adventure. In-deed, this nation's best-loved author was every bit as adventurous, patriotic, romantic, and humorous as anyone has ever imagined. I found another Twain as well – one who grew cynical, bitter, saddened by the profound personal tragedies life dealt him, a man who became obsessed with the frailties of the human race, who saw clearly ahead a black wall of night.

2 Tramp printer, river pilot , Confederate guerrilla, prospector, starry-eyed optimist, acid-tongued cynic: The man who became Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens and he ranged across the nation for more than a third of his life, digesting the new American experience before sharing it with the world as writer and lecturer. He adopted his pen name from the cry heard in his steamboat days, signaling two fathoms (12 feet) of water -- a navigable depth. His popularity is attested by the fact that more than a score of his books remain in print, and translations are still read around the world.

1.The job of arousing manhood within a people that have been taught for so many centuries that they are nobody is not easy. It is no easy job to educate a people who have been told over centuries that they were inferior and of no importance to see that they are humans, the same as any other people.2.Psychological freedom, a firm sense of self-esteem, is the most powerful weapon against the long night of physical slavery. If you break the mental shackles imposed on you by white supremacists, if you really respect yourself, thinking that you are a Man, equal to anyone else, you will be able to take part in the struggle against racial discrimination.3.The Negro will only be free when he reaches down to the inner depths of his own being and signs with the pen and ink of assertive manhood his own emancipation proclamation. The liberation of mind can only be achieved by the Negro himself/herself. Only when he/she is fully convinced that he/she is a Man/Woman and is not inferior to anyone else, can be he/she throw off the manacles of self-abnegation and become free.4.Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against that stands against love.Power in the best form of function is the carrying out of the demands of justice with love and justice in the best form of function is the overcoming of everything standing in the way of love with power.5.At that time, economic status was considered the measure of the individual’s ability and talents. At that time, the way to evaluate how capable and resourceful a person was to see how much money he had made(or how wealthy he was).6.The absence of worldly goods indicated a want of industrious habits and moral fiber.A person was poor because he was lazy and not hard-working and lacked a sense of right and wrong.7.It is not the work of slaves driven to their tasks either by the task, by the taskmaster or by animal necessity. This kind of work cannot be done by slaves who work because the work has to be done, because they are forced to work by slave-drivers or because they need to work in order to be fed and clothed.8.When the unjust measurement of human worth on the scale of dollars is eliminated. When the unfair practice of judging human value by the amount of money a person has got is done away with.9.He who hates does not know God, but he who has love has the key that unlocks the door to the meaning of ultimate reality. Once, upon meeting him in the street he asked him: "Most people are selfish and unsatisfied. They do not smile as often as you do; neither are they as helpful or kind as you are. How do you explain it?"

这该如何解释呢?”"When you make peace with yourself, then you can be in peace with the rest of the world. If you can recognize the spirit in yourself, you can recognize the spirit in everyone, and then you find it natural to bekind and well disposed to all. If your thoughts are under your control you become strong and firm."“当你和自己和平相处时,你就能和世界和平相处。

• The essential element of Zen Buddhism is found in its name, for Zen means "meditation." Zen teaches that enlightenment is achieved through the profound realization that one is already an enlightened being. This awakening can happen gradually or in a flash of insight (as emphasized by the Soto and Rinzai schools, respectively). But in either case, it is the result of one's own efforts. Deities and scriptures can offer only limited assistance.
Background
Overall, the decade is often seen as a period of great contradiction: of rising optimism and deadening cynicism, of increasing and decreasing faith, of great hope and great despair. Put differently, historians usually see the 1920s as a decade of serious cultural conflict.

Mark Twain-the Mirror of America1 Most Americans remember Mark Twain as the father of Huck Finn’s idyllic cruise through eternal boyhood and Tom Sawyer's endless summer of freedom and adventure. In—deed, this nation's best—loved author was every bit as adventurous, patriotic, romantic, and humorous as anyone has ever imagined. I found another Twain as well one who grew cynical, bitter, saddened by the profound personal tragedies life dealt him, a man who became obsessed with the frailties of the human race, who saw clearly ahead a black wall of night.

2 Tramp printer, river pilot , Confederate guerrilla, prospector, starry-eyed optimist, acid—tongued cynic: The man who became Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens and he ranged across the nation for more than a third of his life, digesting the new American experience before sharing it with the world as writer and lecturer. He adopted his pen name from the cry heard in his steamboat days, signaling two fathoms (12 feet) of water -—a navigable depth. His popularity is attested by the fact that more than a score of his books remain in print, and translations are still read around the world.

• His first book, Down and Out in Paris and London (1933), was a nonfictional account--moving and comic at the same time-of several years of selfimposed poverty he had experienced after leaving Burma.
• Orwell's two best-known books reflect his lifelong distrust of autocratic government : Animal Farm (1945), and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949).
Point of view
6. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.
Style
His works show sharp powers of observation and deep sympathy for suffering people. His works give a deep sense of conviction and urgency. The use of English is clear, simple and direct, with no formality of embellishment. He said his ideal was to write prose like a window pane---as clear as glass.
Influence
George Orwell was one of the most important writers of the 20th century and his works have sold millions of copies .

Background
King's English is usually the English originated spoken by the ruling class. But during the periods of the Old English and Middle English it were influenced by the Latin and French, King's English was reprensented by racial discrimination. It was not until early modern period that English came back royally into its own.
As A Book
Because all living languages continually evolve(演变,发展), the book is now considered outdated in some respects, and some of the Fowlers' opinions about correct English usage are at times incorrect with contemporary standards.
Examples
• The Queen and Older Royals might pronounce the following words as noted: house = [ hice ] off = [ orf ] tower = [ tar ] refined =[ refained ]
• Younger Royals might exhibit the following types of pronunciations: really = [ rairly ] milk = [ miuk ] yes = [ yah ] Paul’s = [ Pauw’s ]
As A Book
♫ The King's English is a book on English usage and grammar. ♫ It was written by the Fowler brothers, Henry Watson Fowler and Francis George Fowler, and published in 1906, and thus pre-dates by 12 years Modern English Usage, which was written by Henry alone after Francis's death in 1918.
Background
After the Norman Conquest, the general relation of Normans and Saxons was that of master and servant. One of the most striking manifestations(表现) of the supremacy(霸权) of the conquerors was to be seen in the language. The Norman lords spoke French, while their English subjects retained their old tongue, AngloSaxon.
Questions
1.Do you think the King’s English is the English that everyone should try to speak or properly use on all occasions? 2.What is the author’s attitude of the writer towards “the King's English”?

Definition
“The King’s English” was regarded as a form of racial discrimination during the Norman rule in England about 1154— 1399. It refers to supposed correct or standard British English, as to grammar and pronunciation. And it can be further defined as the standard pronunciation and intonation of British English. It was called from the notion of royal sancti's English is less like a dictionary than Modern English Usage. It consists of longer articles on more general topics such as vocabulary, syntax (语法) and punctuation(标点符号), and draws heavily on examples from many sources throughout. The third and last edition was published in 1931, by which time Modern English Usage had superseded it in popularity.
