What’s more, he doesn’t mind who Marianne chooses and he still loves her until the end. At last, he wins Marianne’s heart and they get married. As for Elinor, she is very reserved and she keeps her love to herself. To tell the truth, she is the one who deserves admiration for she is the eldest in the family of four women. As she is the eldest, she has to be strong and support the family. And she has to put up with things that are unfair to them. When Lucy Steele reveals her secret engagement to Edward, on one hand, she has to keep it a secret, on the other hand, she feel sorrowful for she will lose her lover, Edward. Indeed, she suffers a lot. However, both she and her sister, Marianne are paid back by life. They both have a happy marriage.The ending of the novel is a little bit ideal. What if Colonel Brandon changes his mind? And what if Lucy doesn’t fall in love with Robert and she marries Edward? If these two conditions become true, the two sisters will end up with a tragedy. However, there is a solution to avoid the tragedy that is to marry somebody out of a great amount of sense and a little sensibility. Obviously, Marianne thinks about love and marriage with sense at last. Thus, she marries Brandon. And Elinor expresses her true love to Edward though she is usually a symbol of sense. She began work in 1799 on a novel called Susan (not to be confused with her initial effort), which was published posthumously in 1818 as Northanger Abbey. She wrote three other novels as well - Mansfield Park (1813), Emma (1815), and Persuasion (published posthumously in 1818).Her personal life was a happy but quiet one, consisting largely of her writing, along with the kind of country amusements - balls, parties, and teas - described in her novels. Facing to all the annoying negative characters, Jane can always go right to the heart of the matter: vanity, greed and bad social ideas towards men and women. She isn’t criticizing anyone, but the most talentironic essays in the world flow under Jane’s pen! On the contract, our author is fond of her lead characters and used her passion to make them vivid. Besides Elinor and Marianne, Edward’s honesty and Brandon’s consideration also impressed me a lot.Here I want to take some paragraphs of conversation from the original text for example.“Had you any idea of his coming so soon?” said Mrs. Dashwood. “I had none. On the contrary, if I have felt any anxiety at all on the subject, it has been in recollecting that he sometimes showed a want of pleasure and readiness in accepting my invitation, when I talked of his coming to Barton. Does Elinor expect him already?”“I have never mentioned it to her, but of course she must.”“I rather think you are mistaken, for when I was talking to her yesterday of getting a new grate for the spare bedchamber, she observed that there was no immediate hurry for it, as it was not likely that the room would be wanted for some time.”“How strange this is! what can be the meaning of it! But the whole of their behaviour to each other has been unaccountable! How cold, how composed were their last adieus! How languid their conversation the last evening of their being together! But she feels unhappy, or even sorrowful. She is restricted by the conventions. On the contrary, Marianne never pays much attention to what other people talk about her. She just do what she thinks is right andshe follows her heart. The concept of following our hearts is very popular now, as we are free from the restrictions of the conventions.All of this accords with the post-Revolutionary society in which Austen lived. "Sensibility," the indulgence of personal absolutes regardless of social conventions and laws, is viewed widely as a major source of Revolutionary transgression; "sense" is often opposed to Revolutionary theory. The triumph of sense over sensibility in the novel establishes the value of conventional feminine virtues, a position also espoused by other writers in the aftermath of the Revolution. Elinor and Marianne's "sense" triumphs and suffering bring happiness in the end.I love both of the sisters. As a matter of fact, Marianne catches most of the fancy of me. She does what she wants to do. She loves who she wants to love. She hates to obey the hypocritical social rules. If we compare Elinor to Xue Baochai, Marianne does have something in common with Lin Daiyu. Marianne doesn’t follow who she doesn’t agree with. What’s more, just like Elinor once says,” Mari anne never loves somebody with half of her heart and soul.” How adorable she is! In present society, maybe people like Marianne more than Elinor. Because people think that people of the kind of Elinor are too coward to pursue their own happiness, dream or success. While people like Marianne are more likely to be called “Modern people”——fighting for their dreams and sparing no effort to get what they want to own and reach where they want to go.I t’s the hardest thing in one’s lifetime to choose from sense and sensibility. It’s too childish to let sense cover up sensibility. Entire sense doesn’t seem realistic. I’ve learnt that, the sign of growing up means that you can control sense with sensibility. Sense and Sensibility is a novel written by Jane Austen. According to her consistent manner, Jane Austen described the contradictions between "sense" and "sensibility" exquisitely and skilfully which expressed in the two heroines' intricate l ove experience.
The novel concerns two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood that Elinor represents "sense" and Marianne is "sensibility". Elinor was efficient at controlling her emotion with mind. On the contrary, her sister Marianne was a brilliant girl who always dealt with her affections emotionally. All of these determined their attitude when they faced love.
They lived in Norland Park with their parents and young sister.
A fter the death of their father, the mother and daughters had to move to a country cottage offered by a generous relative. Before they moved out of their former residence, Elinor fell in love with the gentleman Edward who was her sister-in-law’s brother. Elinor not only had never revealed any slightest anguish , but had tried her best to comfort family. When she heard the message from Lucy that she had been engaged with Edward, Elinor kept her despair and looked after her same lovelorn sister. Because of her sense, her emotions in heart were always unable to release. Thus, she had to endure the pain alone. Therefore the selfless and consideration on her were more admired. Differing from her sister,
Marianne' s soul that always advocated romantic love uncontrollably but was also easily upset mad e her sent out a distinctive charm. She never covered over her hates to sister-in-law' s family. To Colonel Brandon, Marianne respected but kept a certain distance. She loved Willoughby more than anything else. She felt shame when she knew how much Elinor sacrificed for her. All of these vividly illustrated her straightforwardness and made everyone can not help loving her.
Unfortunately, Marianne' s blind love mad e her inconsolable, and nearly died when Willoughby betrayed. The conflicts between sense and sensibility were bulged. If she had loved Willoughby with a bit sense, Marianne shouldn't have been so painful. But, may be not. When Elinor who restrained own feelings all along heard that loved Edward didn't get married, she unexpectedly lost calm and reason and run out of the room, crying hard. We had to admitted in front of love, sensibility surmounted sense forever.
After finishing reading this novel, sense and sensibility effected me deeply. Life is not a novel, the God won't bring us a happy ending all the time. In the real life, abundant emotion should involved when it is not extreme. Our emotions should be restrained by sense. On the one hand, I want myself just like Elinor control emotion by sense. On the other hand, why not have a try like Marianne to love somebody regardless of the consequences? Maybe I will be hurt, but I can
gratifying tell myself I have loved so passionately. In a word , contradictious life is wonderful. Only as that is called a real life.。
