Introduction
Computer-assisted surgery (CAS) is a methodology that translates into accurate and reliable image-to-surgical space guidance. Neurosurgery is a very complex procedure and the surgeon has to integrate multi-modal data to produce an optimal surgical plan. Often the lesion of interest is surrounded by vital structures, such as the motor cortex, temporal cortex, vision and audio sensors, etc., and has irregular configurations. Slight damage to such eloquent brain structures can severely impair the patient (1,2). CASMIL, an imageguided neurosurgery toolkit, is being developed to produce optimum plans resulting in minimally invasive surgeries. This system has many innovative features needed by neurosurgeons that are not available in other academic and commercial systems. CASMIL is an integration of various vital modules, such as rigid and non-rigid co-registration (image–image, image–atlas and

Classification of Mammograms...(IJIGSP-V8-N3-5)
Most types of cancer cells eventually accumulate to form a lump or mass called a tumor, and are named after the part of the body where the tumor originates. Majority of the masses are benign; that is, they are not cancerous, do not grow uncontrollably or spread, and are not lifethreatening [2]. There are different imaging modalities currently available for the detection of breast cancer. X-ray mammography is the most efficient and reliable imaging technique for diagnosis at an early stage. Analysis of mammograms is an extremely complex and cumbersome task, which demands high expertise for radiologists. While screening, the volume of normal mammograms will be higher compared to the abnormal ones. So, the possibility of identifying cancerous mammograms decreases during the screening process. Therefore, in order to enhance the quality of interpretation, usually dual readings are carried out by two radiologists and lessen the probability of misdiagnosis. [4], [5]. On account of these reasons, several computer aided diagnostic (CAD) systems based on advanced image processing and pattern recognition techniques are developed to locate and classify the possible lesions. These CAD systems can provide a “second opinion” to the radiologist during diagnosis and prevent misinterpretation. Microcalcifications are tiny calcium deposits that occur in the breast tissue. These are considered to be early indication of breast cancer. Also, microcalcifications are very small in size ranging from 0.1-1.0mm and the average diameter is about 0.3mm. They usually appear in an inhomogeneous background, which may be brighter than the calcifications in the case of dense breasts [6]. Benign calcifications are typically larger, coarser, round with smooth margins and have a scattered or diffused distribution. Malignant calcifications are typically grouped or clustered, pleomorphic, fine with linear branching [7]. Breast tumors and masses usually appear in the form of dense regions in mammograms. Benign masses generally possess smooth, round and well circumscribed boundaries, while the malignant tumors are usually having spiculated, rough and blurry boundaries.

It points out that the book has made a great contribution to the interdisciplinary research, medical research, especially western colonialism research. Keywords: American literature in the 20th century, medicine, empireThis book is the research result of the National Social Science fund of China project achieved by Professor Jiang Tianping and his team. His research team aims to use the theories and methods of Michel Foucault andEdward Said’s theories from a post-colonial perspective to explore the relationship between medical imaginationand imperial politics in American literature of the 20th century, revealing how the natural sciencemedicine All Rights Reserved.evolves into social medicine and medical cultural history under specific historical conditions, and how medicalterms becomesthe medical discourse intertwining and interacting with imperial politics, and participating in theconstruction of empire. The team has selected 13 medical themes or novels with the medical descriptions fromdifferent historical periods as cases. The content of the book is rich and diverse, covering colonial medicine, eugenics, obstetrics, nursing, surgery, psychiatry, virology and many other fields. This book is closely related tothe theme of the connection and interaction between literature, medicine and imperial politics. The combinationof close reading of the text and theoretical interpretation makes it a significant and innovative monograph onAmerican literature research in the 20th century, bringing readers a brand new reading experience and richassociations and some enlightenment.First of all, the research in this book conforms to the contemporary development trend of literature.Contemporary literary research attaches importance to interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary reading strategies, and enriches the experience and interpretation possibilities of literary reading with a broader vision and a diverse*Acknowledgements: This paper is funded by 2017’s Hunan Provincial Funding Project “Colonial Medicine Research in EnglishLiterature” (17YBA343), National Funding Project “Research on disease consciousness and national anxiety in English literatureof the 16th and 17th centuries” (16BWW056), Hunan Provincial Social Science Achievement Review Committee project“Oriental Medical Imagination from a Post-colonial Perspective” (XSP18YBC029) and “American Literature Project”193ysk011).JIANG Jian-song, former dean of Hunan Normal University; Professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of ForeignLanguages; “Senior Visiting Scholar of Cambridge University, UK”; Former president of Hunan Translation Association; ChinaTranslators Association-funded translator (Chinese-English bilingual); “Greater China Library” English final review expert; chiefexpert of the English portal of the Hunan Provincial Government.990BOOK REVIEW OF THE MEDICAL EMPIRE IN 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN LITERATURE and inclusive way.As early as 100 years ago, British historian Thomas Babington Macaulay said: History as adiscipline is between the two distinct fields of fiction and theory, and the boundary is sometimes unclear. Today, with the development of discipline theory and the progress of research methods and research methods, on the onehand, the classification of disciplines is not only more refined, but the division of scabs has become blurred; onthe other hand, it is the empty advancement of science and technology and the return of humanistic spirit. In the“gray zone” or “urban-rural junction” between disciplines, new growth points of research interest will oftenappear, new research fields or research paradigms will be formed, and marginal disciplines or interdisciplinarydisciplines will be born.In recent years, overseas studies such as “big history” and “new translation theory” areexamples of this. This research paradigm has two common characteristics: one is a large perspective and a largedimension, such as the former placing historical events in the macroscopic social and economic structure and thebroad perspective of Chinese and Western comparison; the second is the intersection and integration ofdisciplines. For example, the latter integrates translation theory and practice, comparative literature, and overseassinology studies. The research on this book reflects this trend of contemporary academic research.Secondly, because the literature is placed in a large historical context, the research has a large pattern, which is conducive to the overall investigation of writers and works of the same period, and to explore the historicalimplications and contemporary meaning of literary phenomena. fter studying the classic works of the 18th and19th centuries, Said proposed a reading strategy related to literature and imperialism , so that he can read the richmiddle-class life of the heroes and heroines in Austen’s novels and the British Empire abroad. The relationshipbetween expansion and colonial plunder has deepened the understanding and interpretation of the works.According to the needs of the subject, Professor Jiang Tianping’s team has divided the history of the United All Rights Reserved.States in the 20th century into three periods: “Early Empire-Colonial Expansion”, “Mid-Empire-Cold WarHegemony”, “New Empire Period-Budding of New Imperialism”. The historical background, the main contextof the characteristics of the era and its internal logic have been comprehensively sorted out and explained, andthis historical consciousness and vision are integrated into the analysis of the work, throughout the entire work, plus the observation of related theories, to make the research At the same time, it has the thickness of history andthe depth of theory.Again, this research is a good example of the combination of innovative awareness and desk work. The premise of academic innovation is solid research and strict academic standards. The topics from thedetermination of research objects, research goals and research questions, to the theoretical framework, researchideas and work definitions, from document combing and text reading to the argumentation of opinions and theextraction of conclusions, all reflect a strict academic training and Rigorous style of study. 197 kinds of Chinesereferences and 222 kinds of English references reflect the overall solidity of the previous work. All 400 kinds ofAi Xian in both Chinese and English are cited in the book, and each citation has a page for betting. Hundreds ofnotes, detailed and standardized, testify to the foundation of research and the conscience of scholars, and alsoenhance the persuasiveness of the argument. Finally, the research has reflected a spirit of the times and has important practical significance. The broad vision and pattern of this research that integrates tradition and modernity, interdisciplinary and cross-field, andthebold innovation based on strict and standardized academic exploration, embodies the craftsman spirit of a bigcountry culture. In addition to meticulousness, excellence, and persistent pursuit of decades of sharpening aBOOK REVIEW OF THE MEDICAL EMPIRE IN 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN LITERATURE991sword, a craftsman in a big country must have a big vision, a big pattern, a heavy sense of history and a sense ofmission of the times. Related to this may be greater humanistic care and a stronger sense of innovation.Contemporary foreign language workers may wish to have a “big foreign language” awareness, cultivate deeply, cultivate and accumulate, cultivate the land of foreign language and literature, and at the same time give full playto their strengths. With full cultural self-confidence and high professional level, he has devoted himself to thework of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, and made a unique contribution to foreignlanguage speakers and foreign literary workers for the construction of the “Belt and Road” and the realization ofthe Chinese dream. All Rights Reserved.。

1. Introduction Advancement in the treatment of cancer is one of the major challenges in contemporary medicine and science at large. The number of deaths from cancer is increasing and this disease is the number-one cause of deaths in many countries. In Europe and America radiation treatment for cancer therapy is now applied in most cases (to more than 50% of patients) and in other countries it is increasing. For example, in Japan the percentage is currently around 20%. With the advent of superior diagnosis and early detection of cancer in the future, it is anticipated that this

trend toward increase in radiation therapy will continue [1]. What is the drive behind this trend? We would like to present here one possible school of thought for this based on an oncological consideration. This idea is based on the following observation [2–6]. Dr. Molls argues: “In chemotherapy the tumor cell kill depends on the transport of the substance to the clonogenic cells and molecular targets, DNA repair capacity, repopulation, pO2 , pH, MDR, etc. In macroscopic tumors not all the subvolumes of the tumor, clonogenic cells and relevant molecular targets are reached by those doses of the medical substance which are needed for cell kill. However, the ion beam therapy installation is large and expensive, limiting its availability for public benefit. One of the hurdles is to make the accelerator more compact on the basis of conventional technology. Laser acceleration of ions represents a rapidly developing young field. The prevailing acceleration mechanism (known as target normal sheath acceleration, TNSA), however, shows severe limitations in some key elements. We now witness that a new regime of coherent acceleration of ions by laser (CAIL) has been studied to overcome many of these problems and accelerate protons and carbon ions to high energies with higher efficiencies. Emerging scaling laws indicate possible realization of an ion therapy facility with compact, cost-efficient lasers. Furthermore, dense particle bunches may allow the use of much higher collective fields, reducing the size of beam transport and dump systems. Though ultimate realization of a laser-driven medical facility may take many years, the field is developing fast with many conceptual innovations and technical progress. Keywords : Coherent acceleration of ions by laser (CAIL); target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA); radiation pressure acceleration (RPA); adiabatic acceleration; phase stable acceleration; ion beams; cancer therapy.

Rev. Accl. Sci. Tech. 2009.02:201-228. Downloaded from by PEKING UNIVERSITY on 09/26/13. For personal uon, “the chemotherapy dose distribution is intrinsically inhomogeneous.” On the other hand, Prof. Molls points out: “In radiation therapy the tumor cell kill depends on intrinsic radiation sensitivity, DNA repair capacity, repopulation, oxygenation status, etc. However, the entire tumor can be irradiated matched with the dose, which is necessary to kill all clonogenic tumor cells, even the most resistant ones.” In other words, “it delivers a matched dose distribution,” citing the superior feature of radiation therapy. Most (typically more than 90%) of current radiation therapy is based on photon therapy (using x-rays driven by accelerated electrons). This choice arose because of the technology available with the electron accelerator at an affordable cost and with a sufficiently compact setup. However, as is well known, most ionizing radiations, including x-rays, deposit a larger dose upon their entry or early propagation in the body than in their later propagation and at the all-important tumor site in the patient’s body. Such a dose is exponentially diminishing with penetration depth (see Fig. 1). Because of this property, in most
