A
What will man be like in the future—in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now?We can only make guesses,of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today. For man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an obvious example. Man,even five hundred years ago,was shorter than he is today. Now,on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time,so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again,in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so,we still make use of only about 20% of the brain's capacity. As time goes on,however,we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change to the head,in particular the forehead, will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact,we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand,we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These,as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.
Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at!This may well be true. All the same,in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with use. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.
1.The passage mainly tells us that______.
A .man's life will be different in the future
B. future man will look quite different from us
C. man is growing taller and uglier as time passes
D. man's organs' functions will be on the wane
2.What serves as the evidence that man is changing?
A. Man has got stronger eyes now than h e ever had.
B. Man's hair is getting thinner and thinner.
C. Man's arms and legs have become lighter and weaker.
D. Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years.
3.The change in man's size of forehead is probably because______.
A.he makes use only 20% of the brain's capacity
B.his brain has grown larger over the past centuries
C.the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time
D.he will use his brain more and more as time goes on

What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show the strengths that you can use in your work.A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work.So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard.Although not all
subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value.A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a parttime job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it.If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time,to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example.Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry o r career you see from the inside in a parttime job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be_ all_ thumbs when you handle tools;perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist.Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic(认错的)about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The importance of working hard at school.
B.Choosing a career according to one's strengths.
C.How to face one's weakness.
D.The value of school work.
5.According to the passage, doing a parttime job for a st udent is probably ______.

B.one of the best ways of earning extra money
C.of great use for his work in the future

A.be clumsy at doing things

A.make full use of one's own weak points

Sharing Beauty
It was in October. I was aimlessly wandering down the street, heading into a most gloriously beautiful sunset. I had an urge to speak to someone on the street to share that beauty, but it seemed everyone was in a hurry.
I took the next-best action. Quickly I ducked into a department store and asked the lady behind th e counter if she could come outside for just a minute. She looked at me as though I were from some other planet. She hesitated, and then seemingly against her better judgment, she moved toward the door.
When she got outside I said to her, “Just look at that sunset! Nobody out here was looking a t it and I just had to share it with someone.”
For a few seconds we just looked. Then I said, “God is in his heaven and all is right with the world.” I thanked her for coming out to see it; she went back inside and I left. It felt good to share the beauty.
Four years later my situation changed greatly. I came to the end of a twenty-year ma rriage. I was alone and on my own for the first time in my life. I lived in a trailer park which, at the time, I considered a real come-down, and I had to do my wash in the community laundry room.
One day, while my clothes were going around, I picked up a magazine and read an article about a woman who had been in similar circumstances. She had come to the end of a marriage, moved to a strange community, and the only job she could find was one she disliked: clothing sales in a department store.
Then something that happened to her changed everything. She said a woman came into her department store and asked her to step outside to look at a sunset. The stranger had said, “God is in his heaven and all is right with the world,” and she had realized the truth in that statement. From that moment on, she turned her life around.
8.The author asked the woman to go outside to ______.
A.admire the sunset
B.cheer her up
C.offer some help
D.have a chat
9.Four years later, the author______.
A.found her dream job

C.worked in a laundry room
D.lived in the same community
10.After reading the article in the magazine, the author was probably______.
A.disappointed
B.puzzled
C.inspired
D.ove rjoyed

A person, like a commodity(商品), needs packaging. But going too far is absolutely undesirable. A little exaggeration(夸张) will do no harm when it shows the person's unique qualities to their advantages. To show personal attractiveness in a casual and natural way, it is important for one to have a clear knowledge of oneself. A skilled packager knows how to add art to nature without any signs of embellishment so that the person so packaged is not a commodity, but a human being, lively and lovely.
A young person, especially a female, shining with beauty and full of life, has all the favor granted. Youth however, comes and goes in a flash. Packaging for the middle-aged is primarily to hide the marks made by years. If you still enjoy life enough to keep
self-confidence and work at pioneering work, you are unique in your natural qualities, and your attractiveness and grace will remain. Elderly people are beautiful if their river of life has been, through plains, mountains and jungles, running its course as it should. You have really lived your life, which now arrives at a self - satisfied stage of quietness and calmness with no interest in fame or wealth. There is no need to make use of hair dyeing. The snow-capped mountain itself is a beautiful scene of fairyland. Let your looks change from young to old in step with the natural ageing process so as to keep in harmony with nature, for harmony itself is beauty, while the other way round will only end in unpleasantness. To be in the company of the elderly is like reading a thick book of good edition, which attracts one so much that one is unwilling to part with it. As long as one
finds where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a commodity sets up its brand by the right packaging.

A.hardly exists

es from the appearance
14.According to the author, if you want to keep in harmony with nature, you should ______.

B.make up at a young age
C.follow the ageing process
D.give up fame and wealth

II、信息匹配(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)
Things An Air Hostess Won't Tell You
To make th ings a bit easier for them and ensure a smooth flight, many Flight attendants have little tricks under their sleeves. Here are some of them which they won't tell you out of sheer politeness.
(16)
Contrary to what most people think, a flight attendant's primary job is to ensure your safety - the helping and serving part of their job are just add-ons. If they are assisting you with your luggage, it is to make sure it is stored properly and does not harm anyone. They are not required to lift your bags or help you take them elsewhere. All the other assistance, such as providing you with a drink, handing you hot towels, etc., are to make sure you stay calm and satisfied.
(17)
As unfair as it may seem, the time that a flight attendant spends in getting the plane ready, settling you down, etc., is not included in their salary. They do, however, receive some expense allowance(津贴) for the entire time they clock in - it is a pretty small income though
(18)
If a flight attendant feels a passenger is ordering too many drinks, and getting drunk, they might avoid serving him/her by avoiding eye contact. When that fails, they might just fill the glass half-way or give him/her a diluted (稀释的) drink
(19)
A number of training programs and workshops exist to train flight attendants in different aspects. As some people are using flights more and more to smuggle (走私), flight attendants are being regarded as the first line of defense against this heinous (邪恶的)crime. The benefits are already evident - a number of dangers are avoided, thanks to alert(警惕的) flight attendants on board.
(20)
This is a bit unfortunate for those sitting at the back of the plane, but nevertheless true. As the attendants start serving from the front of the plane to the back, the variety of drinks or meals might go down. This is because a plane has limited space, only a certain number of items can be stored, and by the time they get to the back of the plane, they run out of at least a few of the options.
A. Sitting at the back means fewer food options.
B. Flight attendants get paid only for flight hours.
C. Flight attendants' job is to keep passengers safe.
D. Flight attendants might water down your drinks.
E. Flight attendants are trained to identify criminals.
F. The seat-bel t sign is “on” far longer than necessary.

In the evening,I happened to watch the news report on TV,which said that the Yellow River had run out of water this year. I was burdened with a heavy heart.
