Most full-time students at American universities must have health insurance. This is because college health costs in the United States are high. Colleges are not able to pay the costs if a student suffers a serious accident or sickness. Many American colleges have health centers where doctors and nurses
treat students' medical problems. This service may be included in the cost of attending college. Health
insurance is usually needed for extra services.
Students may already be protected under their family's health insurance policies. If not, many colleges offer their own insurance plans.
For example, students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor are treated without charge for minor medical problems at the university health center. But the university suggests that students buy
its health insurance plan to pay for other health services. The cost is about eight-hundred dollars a year. The insurance generally pays for hospital services, emergency room care and visits to doctors. It also pays for laboratory tests and X-rays. And it pays ninety percent of the cost of drugs ordered by a doctor. The plan does not pay for birth control ,care of the teeth or eyeglasses. And it does not pay for preventive care such as injections that prevent disease.
Students at Boston College in Massachusetts are required to have their own health insurance plan or to buy the college accident and sickness insurance. The college plan costs about five- hundred dollars a year. It pays for any medical' care needed within a time period. It does not pay for eyeglasses, hearing aids, or dental treatment. Students can also buy independent insurance policies from insurance companies. The details of such policies are different, depending on where the student lives.
41. The insurance in University of Michigan covers all of the following EXCEPT ______ .
A. hospital servicesB emergency room care
C. teeth care
D. lab tests and X-rays
42. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

D. The health insurance plans for the students are different from place to place.
43. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. American students' health care costs are covered in more ways than one.
B. The health insurance of University of Michigan can be used in Boston College.
C. 500 dollars can cover any medical care costs within a year.
D. No protection of any kind is available for part-time students.
44. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Health costs in the United States.
B. The protection of the students in America.
C. Health insurance in American universities.
D. American students' medical system .

If this 13-year-old American boy succeeds in his bid to climb Mount Everest, he has modest
ambitions-pick a small piece of rock from the top of the world as a memento and wear it in a necklace. “I will not sell it ; I will not give it to anyone. It is something for myself to say ‘this is a rock from the summit‘ ” Jordan Romero from California, told reporters in Kathmandu. He left for the mountain on Sunday.
If he succeeds, Romero will become the youngest climber to scale the 8,850 meters(29,035 feet) Everest summit. Currently a 16-year-old Nepali boy, Temba Tsheri Sherpa, holds the record of being the world's youngest climber of Mount Qomolangma.
But Romero, sitting over lunch with his climbing father and stepmother in Kathmandu's tourist
district of Thamel said he was not after setting climbing records.
Romero said Mount Qomolangma, that straddles (跨越)Nepal - China border, was part of his goal to climb the highest mountains on all seven continents.
“It is just a goal,” he said confidently. “If I don't succeed I am okay. I will try again."
Romero has already climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and Mount McKinley in Alaska among others.
His father Paul, a critical care paramedic, said the boy was ready to take on the climb and understood the risk of climbing the giant mountain.
“I know it requires a lot of patience. I will remain patient. I want to stay safe and make the
right choice ,Romero said of his climb using the northeast ridge route on the Chinese side of the mountain.
More than 4,000 climbers have reached the top of Mount Qomolangma since it was first climbed by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal's Tenzing Norgay Sherpa in 1953. Romera said he wanted to climb the highest mountains in all 50 states in the United States next. “It does not need to be after Qomolangma and could be in between." Romera added.
45. Romero decided to climb Mount Qomolangma to ______.
A. set a new record
B. realize his dream
C. take a piece of rock
D. please his father
46. Until now ,who is the world's youngest climber of Mount Everest?

B. Temba Tsheri Sherpa.
C. Kathmandu.
D. Paul.
47. How did his father feel about Romero climbing Mount Everest?
A. Supportive.
B. Critical.
C. Proud.
D. Worried.
48. Which is true according to the passage?
A. Romero has a small piece of rock from the top of the world.
B. Very few climbers have reached the top of Mount Qomolangma so far.
C. Romero has climbed the highest mountains in all 50 states in the United States.
D. Climbing the highest mountains requires a lot of patience.

As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.
Just be happy. Sounds too simple, doesn't it? But, in reality, we can have much more happiness if we choose to consider things in positive attitude. Everyone experiences the ups and downs of life; however ,we can make a decision to deal with negative things or practice what the old saying says to do: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! ”
It really boils down to your attitude and you have the ability to change your attitude into any shape you like. Here are some tips:
? Ignore those who tell you that life is too difficult to be happy. What do they know?
? When you awaken each morning, be thankful for another day, even if it's raining.
? Smile at those you meet, even if they don't return the favor.
? Don't borrow trouble. Each day has enough of its own.
? Don't allow trouble to bury you in its gray clouds of sorrow.
? Don't give in to negative thinking.
? Refuse to give up on anything worth having or doing.
? Do something you enjoy each day, even if it's just a walk in your neighborhood.
? Whistle as you go through the day.
? Work at being happy because it's worth it.
You're human, like everyone else, and from time to time you need a little pick-me-up in your decision to be happy. When you reach that stage, find someone else who has decided to be happy. Join forces with him or her and march forward in your decision to be a happy person.
Simply speaking, a happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes.
Choose today to just be happy-as much as it depends on you!
49.The underlined sentence advises us to ______ .
A. work hard for a comfortable life
B. drink lemonade when in difficulty
C. make the best of what we have
D. ignore the negative side of life
50.To feel happy, you should ______ .
A. not give up on negative thinking
B. have a walk with your neighbor every day
C. live in certain circumstances
D. consider the ups and downs of your life positively
51.According to the passage ,who is probably considered to be a happy person?
A. Agnes is always seeking comfortable circumstances.
B. Raman is easy to sink in negative thinking.
C. Kingsley spends some time seeing his favorite films.
D. Louisa hates her boss but doesn't give up the job.
52.Whistle as you go through the day so that ______ .
A. you can make the lemonade delicious
B. you will be happy about your life
C. you won't have any trouble at all
D. you may make others happy
D
Children in America are encouraged, but not forced, to “leave the nest” and begin an independent life once they reach a suitable age (usually between 18 and 21 years) . After children leave home they often find social relationship and financial support outside the family.
Parents do not arrange marriages for their children ,nor do children usually ask permission of
their parents to get married ,Romantic love is most often the basis for marriage in the United States; young adults meet their future spouses (配偶) through other friends, at jobs ,and in organizations and religious institutions.
Although children choose their own spouses, they still hope their parents will approve of their choices. In many families ,parents feel that children should makemajor life decisions by themselves. A parent may try to influence a child to follow a particular profession but the child is free to choose another career.
Sometimes children do precisely the opposite of what their parents wish in order to declare their independence. A son may deliberately decide not to go into his father's business because of a fear that he will lose his autonomy( 自主)in his father's workplace.
This independence from parents is not an indication that parents and children do not love each other. Strong love between parents and children is universal and this is no exception in the American family. Co-existing with such love in the American family are cultural values of self reliance and independence.
53.The marriage of young adults is discussed to show ______ .
A. they are free to choose their spouses
B. they want to win the permission of their parents
C. they want to challenge the authority of their parents
D. they live an independent life
54.It can be inferred from the text that ______ .
A. most American people never make decisions for their children
B. American culture values autonomy and independence
C. American young adults are likely to follow the suit of their parents
D. American parents find it hard to live together with their gown-up children
55.A son is unwilling to work in his father's business mainly because ______ .
A. he wishes to make full use of what he has learnt in school
B. he wishes to do the opposite of what his parents approve of
C. he wants to prove his independence
D. he wants to show his love for his parents
56.The subject matter of this passage is ______ .
A. family values in America
B. marriage arrangements in America
C. the pursuit of a career in America
D. decision making in America

Pronouncing a foreign language is a skill. Every normal person is expert in the skill of pronouncing his own language; but few people are even moderately proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons for this, some obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the fundamental reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages very much better than they do is that they fail to grasp the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce ,and consequently never set about tackling it in the right way. Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill~~one that needs careful training of a special kind, and one that cannot be acquired by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of language, while recognizing the importance of a good accent, refuse to pay attention to ,in their practical teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught; the teacher should be prepared to devote some of the lesson time to this ,and should get the student to feel that here is a matter worthy of receiving his close attention. So, there should be occasions when other aspects of English, such as grammar or spelling ,are allowed for the moment to take second place.
Apart from this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements for the teacher: the first, knowledge; the second, technique.
It is important that the teacher should be in possession of the necessary information. This can generally be obtained from books. It is possible to get from books some idea of the mechanics of speech, and of what we _ general phonetic theory. It is also possible in this way to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those ,say, of your students. Unless the teacher has such a picture, any comments he may make on his students' pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use, and lesson time spent on pronunciation may well be time wasted.
57.Teaching pronunciation ______ .
A. should always be taken into first consideration
B. can never be treated as a main course
C. may not be so important as someone thinks
D. is often not taken seriously by the teachers
58.Most students can't pronounce a foreign language properly in that ______ .
A. they like to learn grammar rather than pronunciation
B. teachers think pronunciation is not important
C. they lack careful training in pronunciation
D. teachers can not find effective ways to teach pronunciation
59.The best way to speak a foreign language well, he suggests, is by ______
A. studying grammar and spelling
B. picking it up by nature
C. undertaking systematic work
D. spending all time on it
60.To make the passage more complete, it would be better for the writer to continue to talk about _ ______
A. teachers' knowledge of pronunciation
B. the correct way to teach pronunciation
C. students' interest in pronunciation
D. the difficulties in teaching pronunciation

One possible version:
Dear Kate,
It is known to us Chinese that Lei Feng, who set us a good example, passed away fifty years ago. A survey has been conducted about what we should learn from him.
The result indicates that, nearly 60% tend to think that from Lei Feng we’re supposed to love labour and seize every chance to learn. Besides, we should devote ourselves to whatever we’re engaged
in and make every effort to do it well. On the other hand, about one third believe it’s essential to be always ready to sacrifice ourselves just for the sake of helping others. Furthermore, a frugal and simple lifestyle must be advocated even though we’ve made remarkable achievements so far. And we feel
it a pity to see that one in ten is still at a loss.
Personally, prosperous as we’re growing, we regard it’s a must to try to help others as much as we can so as to build a harmonious society.。
