2015 Was a Warm, Wild Year. What’s Next?
2015 saw things heat up and get out of hand, and not just in politics.
A record warm December raised average temperatures enough to make 2015 the second hottest year on record in the contiguous United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climate Monitoring Annual Report, which was released Thursday.
The United Nations had previously reported that 2015 was shaping up to be the warmest year on record for the whole planet.
Last year was also the third wettest on record in the U.S. and saw ten weather- or climate-related disasters that each caused at least $1 billion in damage in the U.S. and killed a total of 155 people. These include a drought, two floods, five severe storms, a wildfire, and a winter storm.
The average U.S. temperature was 54.4°F, 2.4°F above the 20th century average, and second only to 2012's record warmth. This was also the 19th consecutive year with average temperatures above the average for the century.
Every state reported above-average annual temperatures. The warming was particularly pronounced across most of the eastern half of the country in December, when many places saw temperatures 30 degrees above normal and many records were set.
This mirrored changes seen in the Arctic that month, when temperatures spiked to 50 degrees above normal. Part of this warming was driven by a strong El Niño, or periodic warming in the Pacific Ocean, but some of it can also be attributed to global warming, says meteorologist Eric Holthaus, who was not involved with the federal report.
The analysis comes less than a month after the U.S. and 194 other countries signed an agreement in Paris to more aggressively counter the effects of climate change.
“Even if all the initial targets in Paris are met, we’ll only be part of the way there when it comes to reducing carbon from the atmosphere,” said President Barack Obama at the time. Still, the agreement represented “a turning point” by setting up “the architecture" for doing so, he said. NOAA's climate monitoring center doesn't issue predictions for future weather, but the agency's Climate Prediction Center does. That team's forecast for the next three months calls for warmer-than-average temperatures in much of the country, although parts of Texas and the Southeast may be a little cooler than usual.
As Lancaster University Professor Gail Whiteman told the Weather Channel, "climate change means extreme weather is the new normal."
41. According to the passage, the warmest year in the U.S. is___________
A.2014
B.2015
C. not mentioned
D. 2012
42. According to the passage, which statement is right?_______
A.2015 was the third wettest year on record in the whole planet.
B.Ten weather- or climate-related disasters in the U.S. include a drought, two floods, four severe storms, two wildfires, and a winter storm.
C.The 20th century average temperature in the U.S. was 52°F.
D.The warming was pronounced across most of the western half of the country in December.
43. The agreement the US. and 194 countries signed aimed to__________
A. reduce carbon from the atmosphere
B. counter effects of climate change.
C. set up the architecture
D.find artificial ways to cool down the extreme weather
44. What does Professor Gail Whiteman mean in the future?
A. Extreme weather will be common in the future.
B. Climate change will be normal.
C. Extreme weather will be normal, if we don’t take measures.
D. Climate change lead to extreme weather.
45. Where does the passage probably come from?
A.A textbook
B. A newspaper
C. Ascience fiction
D. A financial journal

A few things to consider before booking a flight:
With fuel costs rising and airlines finding more fees to impose on travelers every day, airfare isn’t getting any cheaper. Since you can’t drive to all your dream destina tions, flying is the only way to go sometimes and, undeniably, the fastest. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead.
Getting the best fare
Airlines put out their fare sales on Tuesday morning, making this day the best day to book a flight for less.
Fly during the least popular times. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since many people don’t like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting bumped on an overbooked flight or delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.
Choose your seat later. Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still get suitable seats. Some of the best seats get held back until flight day, unless others are willing to pay extra for them ahead of time, so you still have the chance at one of those.
Fly on holidays. You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, and even though most other times are more affordable, the days surrounding holidays can be crazy. Save big if you’re willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Don’t wait until the last-minute to book. Many travelers don’t know that there’s a sweet spot for booking and getting the best price on your tickets. Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel.
Avoiding extra fees
Airlines will charge for just about anything these days. Some have even toyed around with charging customers for using the restroom. All those extra fees can certainly add up, but there’s no reason to pay them if you don’t have to. H ere are some tips to keep money in your wallet once you get to the airport.
Avoid the upgrade it's not necessary. Sometimes upgrades are free, but mostly you will be charged for seeking a last-minute bump to first class, and the cost can be hefty.
Fly carry-on only. Baggage fees vary wildly, but almost all airlines charge them and charge big. Why pay for your clothes to fly with you? If everyone in your travel party checks a bag, your bill can be astronomical before you ever even get to your destination. It’s easy to reduce the amount of stuff you pack: Make sure all your clothing coordinates, so you can take less and still make more outfit combinations, take only two pair of shoes, plan to do a bit of laundry on your trip and bring only travel-sized toiletries.
Pack your own snacks. Unless you’re flying internationally, it’s rare your flight comes with a free meal. Snacks on the plane are not cheap and almost never healthy. Don’t rely on what’s on the small menu and instead tuck some of your own snacks – granola bars, homemade muffins, fruit and trail mix all make fantastic travel foods – into your bag and eat a lot better, and cheaper, than other passengers.
Do you have a tried and true method of getting the best deal on your flights? Let us know.
46.To save money, which one should NOT be the choice?
A.Early morning flights
B.Early boarding times
C. The flights on Saturday
D.The flights on Summer holiday
47. According to the passage, which one is right?
A. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still get the best seats.
B. You can Save big if you’re willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
C. You will be charged for seeking the upgrades, and the cost can be high.
D. If you’re flying internationally, your flight will come with a free meal.
48.If you want to travel on September 10th, when is the best time to book your flight?__________
A.On July 1st
B. On August 25th
C. On September 3rd
D. On August 10th
49.According to the passage, you can do the things except_____ to avoid extra fees.
A. Use the restroom.
B. Tuck your own snacks
C. Fly with carry-on only.
D. Avoid the upgrade.

The relationship between exercise and cancer has long both intrigued and puzzled oncologists and exercise physiologists.
Exercise is strongly associated with lowered risks for many types of cancer. At the same time, exercise involves biological stress, which typically leads to a short-term increase in inflammation (发炎)which can contribute to higher risks for many cancers.
Now, a new study in mice may offer some clues into the exercise-cancer paradox. It suggests that exercise may change how the immune system deals with cancer by boosting adrenaline(肾上腺素), certain immune cells and other chemicals that, together, can reduce the severity of cancer or fight it off altogether.
To try to better understand how exercise can both elevate inflammation and simultaneously protect the body against cancer, scientists at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and other institutions decided to closely examine what happens inside mice at high risk for the disease.
So, for the new study, they began by gathering a group of adult lab mice. These animals generally like to run.
The scientists then implanted melanoma(黑素瘤) skin cancer cells into the mice before providing half of them with running wheels in their cages while the other animals remained sedentary. After four weeks, far fewer of the runners had developed full-blown melanoma than the sedentary mice and those that had been diagnosed with the disease showed fewer and smaller lesions.
They drew blood from both the exercising and sedentary animals and cells from any tumors in both groups. As expected, they found much higher levels of the hormone adrenaline in the blood of the exercising animals, especially right after they had been working out on the wheels but also at other times of the day. The body releases adrenaline in response to almost any type of stressful experience, including exercise.
They also found higher levels of interleukin-6 in the blood of the runners. This is a substance that is released by working muscles and is believed to both increase and decrease inflammation in the body, depending on where and how it goes to work.
Perhaps most important, they found much higher numbers in the bloodstreams of runners than in the sedentary mice of a type of immune cell named natural killer cells that are known to be strong cancer fighters.
So the scientists repeated their original experiment multiple times, inducing cancer while allowing some mice to run and others to sit. In some of these follow-up experiments, the scientists injected the runners with a substance that blocked the production of adrenaline and gave sedentary animals large doses of added adrenaline.
What they now found was that when running mice could not produce adrenaline, they developed cancer at the same rate as the sedentary animals, while the sedentary animals that had been injected with extra adrenaline fought off their tumors better than other sitting mice.
More remarkably, the scientists determined that adrenaline seemed to be sending biochemical signals to some of the animals’ IL-6 cells, making them physiologically more alert, so that when a tumor began to develop in the affected animal, those IL-6 cells in turn activated the natural killer cells in the bloodstream and actually directed them to the tumors, like minute guide fish.
With these results, “we show that voluntary wheel running in mice can reduce the growth of tumors, and we have identified an exercise-dependent mobilization of natural killer cells as the underlying cause of this protection,” said Pernille Hojman, a researcher at the University of Copenhagen who oversaw the new study. It perhaps provides one more incentive for us to get up and move.
50. The relationship between exercise and cancer has long puzzled oncologists and exercise physiologists because________
A. exercise is strongly associated with lowered risks for many types of cancer.
B. exercise can both elevate inflammation which can contribute to higher risks for many cancers and meanwhile protect the body against cancer.
C. exercise may change can reduce the severity of cancer or fight it off altogether.
D. exercise can lead to a short-term increase in inflammation which can contribute to elevated risks for many cancers.
51. In the first experiment, which one is the most important result the scientists found?_______
A. natural killer cells are much more in the bloodstreams of runners than in the sedentary mice.
B. levels of interleukin-6 are higher in the blood of the runners than in the sedentary mice.
C. exercise such as running seemed to help the mice fight against the cancer.
D. adrenaline can reduce the severity of cancer or fight it off.
52. What does the underlined word “sedentary” mean?
A. run
B. move
C. sit
D. sleep
53.In the follow-up experiments, the scientists found__________ ?
A. the hormone adrenaline has much higher levels in the blood of the exercising animals,
B. how these elements in the runners —their increased adrenaline, IL-6, and natural killer immune cells fight against tumor.
C. interleukin-6 can both increase and decrease inflammation in the body, depending on where and how it goes to work.
D. what happens inside mice at high risk for the disease.
54.According to the study, we can infer the fundamental substance to fight the cancer off is________
A. adrenaline
B. interleukin-6
C. natural killer cells
D. genes

My mom only had one eye. I hated her… she was such an embarrassment. My mom ran a small shop at a flea market. She collected little weeds and such to sell… anything for the money we needed.
There was this one day during elementary school. I remember that it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out.
I wished that my mom would just disappear from this world so I said to my mom, “Mom, why don’t you have the other eye?!You’re only going to make me a laughingstock. Why don’t you just die?” My mom did not respond.
That night… I woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. My mom was crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I took a look at her, and then turned away. Because of the thing I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my mother who was crying out of her one eye. So I told myself that I would grow up and become successful, because I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty.
Then I studied really hard. I left my mother and came to Seoul and studied, and got accepted in the Seoul University with all the confidence I had. Then, I got married. I’m living h appily as a successful man. I like it here because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom.
This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see me “What?! Who’s this?!” It was my mother… Still with her one eye. It felt a s if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.
And I asked her, “Who are you? I don’t know you!!” as if I tried to make that real. I screamed at her “How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter! Get out of here now!!” And to this, my mother quietly answered, “oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared. Thank goodness… she doesn’t recognize me. I was quite relieved. I told myself that I wasn’t going to care, or think about this for the rest of my life.
One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. I lied to my wife saying that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went down to the old shack, that I used to call a house…just out of curiosity t here, I found my mother fallen on the cold ground. But I did not shed a single tear. She had a piece of paper in her hand…. it was a letter to me.
She wrote:
My son, I think my life has been long enough now. And… I won’t visit Seoul anymore… but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school…. For you… I’m sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarr assment for you. You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye… so I gave you mine… I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye. The couple times that you were angry with me. I thought to myself, ‘it’s because he loves me.’ I love you. You mean the world to me.
My World Shattered. I hated the person who only lived for me . I cried for My Mother, I didn’t know of any way that will make up for my worst deeds…

Tips for Teen Entrepreneurs(创业者)
It’s harder to find jobs in today’s tough economy. If you need to earn money over the summer or after school, why not become your own boss?
Here are 5 tips on starting your own business:
61. _____________________________. Think about the kinds of services that might do well in your area. If you live in a suburb and your neighbors travel long distances to work, they may need dog walking help. Pet sitting is another good line of business during the summer or over the holidays when people travel. If there are lots of senior citizens in your area, a computer help business might do well. Keep your ears open for opportunities. If you have your license and you hear your mom’s friend talking about how her kids need to be picked up at the same time from different places, suggest she hire you to help. You also can offer to pick up anything from groceries to dry cleaning, or clean anything from windows to cars.
62. _____________________________. Once you know what you want to do, figure out how much to charge. Search online to see what others charge for the service you plan to provide. Teens often have an advantage: Less experience means you may be able to charge less, making your business more competitive.
63. _____________________________. Print flyers(传单) describing the services your business offers. List your rates and your phone number or email address. Drop off a flyer at every house in your neighborhood. Give some to parents to take to work. Ask local stores or coffee shops if you can post a f lyer on their community notice board. If you do this, make a bunch of tabs along the bottom with the service you offer and a phone number, so people can tear one off instead of taking the entire flyer.
64. _____________________________. Once you have clients, you’ll need to keep track of them. You don’t want to forget to walk someone’s dog because you were feeding someone else’s fish. Buy a calendar and write down every job you do each day and the time you’ll do it. Keeping a calendar also reminds you of how many times you provided a service so you can bill your clients.
A parent, teacher, or school counselor can help you get started on business planning. Who knows, your business may grow so fast that you’ll have to hire friends to help!
65. _____________________________. If you drive for work, you’ll want to be sure you have insurance —especially if you’ll be driving other people’s cars or transporting their kids. You’ll also need to look into any coverage you might need for ta king care of other people’s property or pets. Ask a parent, school counselor, or teacher for advice. If you’re lucky (and skillful!) and your business brings in a lot of money, talk to your parents about whether you might need to pay taxes.
With a little preparation, running your own business can bring great rewards, in both money。
