阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A 、B、C 和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
I was driving home the other day on a sunny afternoon. I had a smile on my face as I sang along to the songs on the radio. It was such a beautiful day that I felt full of happiness. My good mood ended, however, when the radio station took a news break between songs. Then suddenly I found myself listening to yet another story of a rich famous man who had broken the law. I shook my head as I came to a red traffic light.
As I pulled to a stop, I noticed four leather-jacketed bikers. They were standing in the middle of the road with two on either side of the light. They looked rough and dangerous, but as I got closer I noticed they were holding their helmets in their hands.
I rolled down my window as one approached my car. “We are the Brother of the Wheel,” he said. “We are collecting money for Christmas Toy Drive for needy children.” when I pulled a dollar out of my wallet I looked past his beard and into his eyes. They shined with goodness and kindness that came right from his soul. I dropped the money in his helmet and waved to the other bikers as I drove off. My good mood had returned. My faith in mankind had been bolstered. And I remembered once again never to judge people by their appearance.
Our society often judges books by their covers but God reads what is written in our hearts and souls. Perhaps one day we will all learn to see the world through the same eyes. Perhaps one day we will realize that looks matter little and actions matter much.

Stay warm and be a nicer person
An old English saying goes: Cold hands, warm hearts. It is generally used to describe how a cool outlook often disguises (伪装) a kind heart. However, Yale University researchers seem to disapprove of the old saying. They found how physically warm you are has a direct relation to how nice you are to people.
To test the theory the scientists carried out two studies involving a total of 94 undergraduates. They gave the unwitting (不知情的) participants a glass of hot or cold coffee and then asked what they thought of a stranger after a brief meeting. They found that holding a hot cup of coffee led people to judge the stranger to be a “warmer” person, in terms of generosity and kindness, compared to a group of people who held a cup of iced coffee.
In the second study the researchers had people, who thought they were evaluating a product, hold either hot pads or cold pads. Then they give the participants a choice of rewards for participating in the study: either a gift for a friend, or a reward for themselves. The study found that people who held the hot pad were more likely to choose the gift for a friend, and people who held the cold pad were more likely to choose the reward for themselves.
“It appears that the effect of physical temperature is not just on how we see others, and it affects our own behavior as well,”said Professor John Bargh, a psychologist who carried out the study.
“Physical warmth can not only make us see others as warmer people, but also causes us to be warmer —more generous and trusting as well.”
The researchers believe the effect relates to childhood when emotional warmth given by a parent was often accompanied by the physical warmth of being held or hugged.
25. The article was written mainly to tell us that _______.
A. scientists must use data to back up their findings
B. what kind of person you are determines your attitude towards others
C. if people are physically warm, they will probably be nice to others.
D. people’s appearances will disguise what they think in their minds
26. How will the physical warmth cause the participants to be towards others?
A. Trusting, friendly and generous.
B. Generous, curious and merciful.
C. Kind, thoughtful and selfish.
D. Generous, trusting and loyal.
27. The Yale researchers tested the theory by _________.
A. asking participants to evaluate certain products
B. finding out participants’ reactions to others when holding either hot or cold things
C. asking participants what they thought of a stranger after a brief meeting
D. conducting a survey among 94 undergraduates
28. What can we conclude from the passage?
A. How emotionally warm you are directly relates to your childhood experiences.
B. The participants holding the hot pads preferred to choose the reward for themselves.
C. We shoul dn’t judge people just by their cool outlook.
D. Physical temperature plays a role in both how we see others and how we behave.
C
As a public school superintendent (督导), I believe the best way to prepare students for colleges and careers is to focus on everyone else in a community, should play a role as a “cognitive coach” to students, helping develop good thinkers among your youth.
The best way for you to become cognitive coach is to seek out and engage school children and adolescents in meaningful conversations. The objective here is to get kids talking about what they think, how they feel, and what they believe whenever and wherever you may find them. It may be in a classroom. It may be at the grocery store. It may be at a basketball game. It doesn’t matter where as long as you engage students in a topical conversation and, hopefully even a debate. Mainly, you want to encourage students to voice their opinion about things. Get them to take a position on “this thing, or that thing” and ask them to sup port their position with evidence. Curiously enough, the simple process of engaging students in real life conversations and debates will serve to strengthen what they have learned in the classroom, and help them create their own knowledge about a subject or a topic.
Learning indicates that a student has been exposed to material, understands the material, and can recall the information. Knowledge, on the other hand, goes beyond recall and includes information processing, application to other situations, consideration of meaning, and contrasting with other concepts. Naturally, the topic of conversation you engage in with one of your learners will differ from student to student, and in the level of complexity based on child’s age and developmental level. Even a kindergartener has an opinion about things that are going on in his or her life. Engaging in conversation with any members of your learning community in ways that get at what they have learned and what they know will help them develop higher order reasoning skills.
A student’s synthetic thinking (综合思维) process occurs when a respected adult asks a question, particularly a question that requires reflection. I think all adults in a community have a responsibility to help children with this process, with the goal of producing independent thinkers.
29. According to the writer, what most helps develop students’ thinking?
A. Enlarging one’s knowledge.
B. Learning from respected adults.
C. Attending instructional programs.
D. Making evidence-based arguments.
30. Which is the best question raised by a cognitive coach?
A. What have you learnt recently?
B. Will you pay by the credit card?
C. How do you like this basketball team?
D. Where are you going this weekend?
31. The writer mentions a kindergartener in Paragraph 3 in order to __________.
A. emphasize the importance of being a good thinker
B. suggest that education should start at an early age
C. prove that even children have their own ways of thinking
D. explain the necessity of choosing proper conversation topics
32. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To state an education idea.
B. To assess a teaching strategy.
C. To introduce a learning method.
D. To compare different education methods.
D
A name is supposed to last a lifetime, so picking a name for your baby doesn’t seem like something you would want to base on current trends. The general trend in baby naming these days is all about originality. Classic, traditional names like the ones given to the characters of most Hollywood movies over the past 30 years are on their way out. Instead of common and familiar names, new parents want unique and even strange ones.
This can mean reaching a bit further into the past for names that were typical a few generations or more ago but are uncommon now. Old-fashioned names have a strangeness that many new parents judge to be cool. Need another option for your special little boy or girl? Try a foreign name because a name from another language is sure to draw attention and might give your child an attractive image within your own culture. After all, if you look beyond your own language, there are an incredible number of charming names to choose from. Another option is to use a last name as a first name. Parents who want to honor someone important or someone famous like a politician, artist, or writer might tend to give the famous surname to their child as a first name. Hence parents that like music or sports have been choosing names like Jackson or Jordan to honor their favorite people. Celebrities(名人)have always liked to stand out from the crowd, and they are making sure their children do as well, with names like Moon Unit, Apple, and Jermajesty. Just remember, a baby’s name is theirs for life, so choose wisely and avoid picking a name that will likely result in endless jokes and nicknames for the first 20 years of his or her life.
33. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The popularity of original baby names.
B. Current events influencing naming babies.
C. Hollywood celebrities prefer classic names.
D. Picking out names for children isn’t so important.
34. What does the expression “on their way out” mean?
A. Losing popularity.
B. Drawing attention.
C. Causing dissatisfaction.
D. Gaining force.
35. In regard to baby naming, what does the author think is a good idea?
A. Naming from only the parents’ mother tongue.
B. Naming children after someone important.
C. Using names of foreign streets, cities or countries.
D. Using strange name making children instantly popular.

参考范文:
With the popularity of smart phones and the development of modern technology, people choose to send their best wishes through WeChat to their friends and family members on their birthdays or at festivals. Red envelopes are given to each other as lucky money or gifts.
Compared with traditional ways of expressing best wishes, giving red envelopes has many advantages. First, it creates much fun among friends and family members by gabbing red envelopes. More importantly, it’s quicker and more convenient to send and receive them, without being limited by time and space. In this way, it saves people much time especially in such a busy society.
Personally, I prefer this new ki nd of expressing wishes. It’s the Internet that is making our life more colorful and comfortable. Let’s just enjoy the fun of it.。
