There once lived in China a very foolish king and queen. One day the queen had a baby daughter. When they saw their baby, they both cried out, “My goodness! How small it is! It’s hairless and toothless! It’s a monster!” they sent for all the doctors in the country and ordered them to prepare some medicine for her.
“When she drinks your medicine, she must grow to the right size and have hair and teeth,”the king said, “If you don’t do this, you’ll have a beating.”
The doctors thought it impossible, but they dared not say anything against the king’s order. Just then and old doctor stepped forward. “Oh, we shall certainly obey your order,” he said, “but it takes time. We have to dig a mineral from the KunLun Mountains when the snow melts for the second time. The snow melts on those mountains only once in six years. So we need twelve years.”
At last the king agreed and the doctors took away the little princess. On her twelfth birthday, they brought her back to her parents with long black hair and beautiful teeth. The king and queen were very happy and gave the doctors expensive presents.

What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange, red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer graysand blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. If you love green, you are strong-minded and determined. You wish to succeed and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, and the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us that we don’t choose our favorite color as we grow up. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.
A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful and comfortable than a dark green one, and a red dress rings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. Light and bright colors make people not only happier but also more active. It is a fact
that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or dark grey .
Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can always brighten your day or your life with a new shirt or a few colorful things. Remember also that you will know your friends and your enemies better when you find out what colors they like and dislike. And don’t forget that anyone can guess a lot about your character when you choose a piece of handkerchief.
25. According to this passage, _______________.
A. one can choose his color preference
B. one is born with his color preference
C. one’s color preference is changeable
D. one has to choose his favorite color as soon as he can see clearly
26. The main idea of this passage is _____________.
A. one’s color preference shows one’s character
B. you can brighten your life with wonderful colors
C. psychologists have been studying the meaning of color preference
D. one’s color preference has something to do with his character and colors have effects on human beings
27. The writer believes that in realizing the four modernizations of country, we need more people who love _________.
A. yellow
B. red
C. green
D. black
28. “I am feeling black” means ____________.
A. I am feeling well
B. I am very happy
C. I am excited
D. I am depressed
C
Norm Pethrick, a 36-year-old man in Australia’s northern city Darwin, was praised on Thursday for jumping onto a crocodile’s back to save his wife Wendy at Litchfield National Park, a popular tourist spot southwest of Darwin, a local newspaper reported.
Ms Pethrick was standing on a river bank Wednesday afternoon when the saltwater crocodile lunged (扑), locking its jaws on both her legs as it tried to drag her underwater.
Norm Pethrick, who with his wife had been collecting water, immediately went to help her.
He jumped onto the back, poked (戳) the eyes of the crocodile and finally got his wife free.
Ms Pethrick was later taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for a medical treatment. The doctors said she was suffering eight puncture wounds in her right leg, a puncture wound in her left leg and a serious cut to one of her fingers.
“This could have been a fatal and tragic situation,” said the general manager of Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH), Dr Len Notaras, according to a local report.
He said Ms Pethrick was saved by her husband’s “quick and diligent actions”.
Dr Notaras also said she would remain in hospital for three to four days and have an operation to clean the wounds, which are easy to get infected because of bacteria on the teeth of the crocodile
29. This passage is most likely to be found in ______.
A. a travel guide
B. a newspaper
C. a textbook
D. a novel
30. Which of the following statements is TRUE about Mrs Pethrick?
A. Her eyes were badly poked

A lot of people are interested in sea animals, especially the ones that are beautiful and smart. Although some are wild, and can be deadly, each is also unique in its own way. Whales, sharks and dolphins are the main subjects of sea-animal research, with dolphins standing out from whales and sharks for their friendly behavior with humans. No doubt the desire to learn some interesting things about dolphins has led you to this article, and you too are eager to know more about these sea creatures.
It is sometimes believed that Dolphins have been evolved from land mammals. Among sea mammals, dolphins are the most advanced in intelligence. You may be surprised to learn that they are close relatives of camels and cows. The debate on the origin of the dolphin is an unending one, however. Some believe that they evolved from land-based hoofed (有蹄的) mammals, others
believe that they evolved from other different kinds of mammals many millions of years ago. There are about 32 types of dolphins that live in salt water, each unique in its color and body shape. Five other types live in fresh water.
A grown-up dolphin eats nearly 20 to 22 kilos of fish every day. The eating habits of dolphins depend on where they live, and on the season. Seasons in which fish are abundant are like party time for dolphins. Dolphins decide how much they are going to eat based on the fat content of the fish available. They’ve a good sense of understanding about their hunger.
The social skills and intelligence of dolphins make them very attractive for zoos and aquariums, where they are often trained to show off their diving skills. Dolphins also communicate with each other by special sounds.
32. Scientists like to research dolphins mainly because _______.
A. they are friendly to humans
B. they have good diving skills
C. they have unique bodies
D. they are beautiful and clever
33. The underlined word "they" in the second paragraph refers to _________?
A. Camels and cows.
B. Dolphins.
C. The relatives of dolphins.
D. Hoofed mammals.
34. We can know for sure from the second paragraph that dolphins ___.
A. evolved from land animals
B. are the most advanced animals in the world
C. have a close connection with camels
D. live only in salt water
40. Paragraph 3 mainly talks about ___________?
A. How dolphins know they are hungry.
B. How much dolphins eat daily.
C. What dolphins like to eat.
D. The eating habits of dolphins.

参考范文:
Dear Lucy,
I have received your email. You asked me for some suggestions on how to be a guest in China. Here are some suggestions received by most Chinese.
Firstly, when you visit a Chinese family, you’d better bring some gifts. In China, it is usually considered impolite to visit someone with nothing in hand. So, you can buy some fresh fruits or a box of milk. What’s more, table manners are also of great importance. We Chinese like to treat our guests with many delicious dishes. When at table, you should not being eating first, but follow the host or the senior one. Sometimes, the host will help you with some dishes, which is different from western traditions, and you should show your appreciation.
All in all, just as the old saying goes, “When in Rome, do as Romans do.”
I do hope you will enjoy yourself in your teacher’s home.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
