Do you mind sharing your test scores with others?
On May 16, Guo Ruiting, 14, from Shenzhen Foreign Language School, had a big debate (辩论) with her classmates on this topic.
Guo believed that making the scores public would make students study harder. At first, she explained many theories (理论) that she had collected on the Internet. But they were too difficult to understand. So she was easily beaten by her opponent (对方) Du Xiaoshe.
“Publishing t he res ults of our tests is bad for us,” said Du. He came to this conclusion (结论) after he failed his history exam one month ago. He thought it was just an accident. But he felt so hurt when his parents got a list of his marks. It also showed the marks of other students in his class.
His experience seeme d to have won over many students. But Guo’s team didn’t give up.
“Don’t you forg et the time when we all worked harder after knowing the average mark of Class 2?” asked Guo. “We’d have never been so good if we didn’t know how far we were behind. So it’s good to know others’ marks,” said Guo.
These words encouraged Du. He partly agreed with Guo’s team. He thought it was good to show the average mark of each class but not individual marks. This is the perfect way to respect their privacy and make them work hard as well.
Such a conclusion won most of the students’ minds.
“Sometimes we need to compromise (折中), both in a debate and in our life,” added Du.

Everybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money?
As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values and beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it’s not easy to change later in life. Financial experts say that everyone also has his or her own belief of how to manage his or her finances. This is the part of our value system and it has a great effect on the way we look after our money. According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are: the ant, the cricket and the snail.
The ant—work first
Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don’t care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ants loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks with low risk.
The cricket—fun first
The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn’t think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance.
The snail—living under pressure
The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure if they can afford them. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.
23. What is the meaning of value system in this passage?
A. Belief of how to manage our finances.
B. The way we look after our money.
C. Something will not change later in life.
D. A set of our own values or beliefs.
24. The ants refers to people who _______.
A. work very hard in summer in order to store food for winter.
B. could make more money if they worked harder.
C. save money they earn for their later life when they get old and retire.
D. only care about enjoying the moment by working very hard.
25. Which of the following is true according to the last paragraph?
A. The snails enjoy life because they have luxury houses.
B. The snails live under pressure and they may have problems in the future.
C. The snails will take more loans if they realize that they can afford them.
D. The snails take big long-term loans because the interest for the long-term loans is low.
26. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To make fun of the three kinds of foolish people.
B. To make us understand the differences and manage our money better.
C. To make us understand we should spend our own money.
D. To state that we are the same as animals.
D
It is said that the body clock of teenagers run up to three hours later than that of young children and older adults. UK scientists have said that starting school at 10:00 could have huge benefits to teenagers.
Research sugg ests that society pays too little attention to our “body clock” and some teenagers have a late running biological rhythm(生物节奏). This means sticking to an early start can cause sleep problems, which in turn can affect learning and health.
In fact, Dr Kelley, a scientist from the university of Oxford, said, the body clock of most people between age 10 and 55 is not well suited to rising early. “Most people wake up to alarms, because they don’t naturally wake up at the time when they have to get up and go to work. So we’ve got a sleep-deprived society than any other age group.”
Dr Kelley and his workmates argue that schooldays should start at 10:00 and university at 11:00, to between match the rhythms of teenagers and young adults.
“All the ev idence(证据)points to the same thing,” Dr Kelley told BBC News. “There are no negative outcomes for moving the schoolday later and no positive outcomes for moving earlier.”
The experiment will divide 100 schools into four groups. One group of school will shift their school for 14 to 16 -year-olds to a 10:00 start; another group will offer “sleep education” to their students. This includes “helping students realize sensible ways of making their sleep good sleep”, Dr Kelley said, such as avoiding screen-based activities in the evening.
The third group of schools will introduce both a later start and sleep education, while the fourth group will make no such changes.
The experiment will commence in the 2016-2017 academic year(学年), and the researchers plan to report their results in 2018.
27. Which is an early start not good for?
A. Young children.
B. Older adults.
C. Teenagers.
D. Older researchers.
28. Dr Kelley and his workmates think that _________ .
A. most teenagers are suited to rising early
B. students should get up early to go to school
C. students had better start classes at 10:00
D. university days should start much earlier
29. Which group of school will offer their students “sleep education” only?
A. Group One.
B. Group Two.
C. Group Three.
D. Group Four.
30. What does the word “commence” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Begin.
B. Restart.
C. End.
D. Think.

A.Another quality that helps people succeed is creativity.
B.Finally if you are a successful person, you will be able to look people in the eyes and smile confidently.
C.Practicing is equally important if you want to succeed.
D.Reading is another thing to success, as it will help you learn about how other people have achieved success.
E.The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, you must have a purpose.
F.If you want to succeed, you must have enough courage.
Some people succeed, while others may not. This is because some people possess some qualities, which others do not. If you want to be successful, you should have the following qualities at least.
31 If you do not expect to win, you will not try as hard as those who do expect to win, You also need to have a clear aim and a reason for doing something because motivation is a key to achieving success. If you do not have a purpose, then you will not be motivated to work hard and put your performance under the microscope to make sure that every detail is right.
32 If you want to learn how to set up a successful business, you should read books about people like Bill Gates and Jerry Yang, who have achieved amazing success in their areas of business.

Ladies and gentlemen, glad to meet you, all the newcomers! Welcome to the International English School in London. You are all here to improve your business English skills.
But I think you also want to know something about the places and the life here. So this weekend, which is your first weekend in London, we’ll help you to experience your new surroundings in an unusual exciting way. On Friday morning, we’ll visit the city of London. And I also organize a visit to a museum for those who are interested. At 2:00 p.m., we’ll play games that’ll help you get to know each other. I think, you’ll all be rather tired after dinner, so we’ll see a film at 7:00 p.m., which is free to all Internet English School students. On Saturday, we have organized a day trip to visit the historical city of Bath, which is 156 kilometers west of London. We’ll leave at 10:00 a.m. by bus. Everything will be provided for you, including lunch. Now on Sunday, you are free, and it is up to you how to spend the day. OK, that’s all. Thank you!

Heart-to-Heart Talks with Parents
As is shown in the bar chart, children spend less time having heart-to-heart talks with their parents when they grow older. For example, while the 7-9 age group spends as many as 6 hours per week on average, the 16-18 age group spends only half the time.
There are two major reasons for this: both parents and children are too busy working or studying, and there aren’t many topics of common interest for them to talk about.
In my opinion, children should let their parents know more about what they are interested in. At the same time, parents should spend more time talking with their children and exchanging opinions with them. Only in this way they can better understand each other.
