第三部分:阅读理解(每题2分,满分38分)
A
When I was an education official in Palo Alto, California. Polly Tyner, the president of our school board, wrote a letter that was printed in the Palo Alto Times. Polly’s son, Jim, had great difficulty in school. He was classified as educationally disabled and required a great deal of patience on the part of his parents and teachers. But Jim was a happy kid with a great smile that lit up the room. His parents acknowledged his academic difficulties, but always tried to help him see his strengths so that he could walk with pride. Shortly after Jim finished high school, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. After his death, his mother submitted this letter to the newspaper.
Today we buried our 20-year-old son. He was killed instantly in a motorcycle accident on Friday night. How I wish I had known when I talked to him l ast that it would be the last time. If I had only known I would have said, “Jim, I love you and I’m very proud of you.”
I would have taken the time to c ount the many blessings he brought to the lives of the many who loved him. I would have taken the time to appreciate his beautiful smile, the sound of his laughter, his genuine love of people.
When you put all the good qualities on the scale and try to balance all the irritating phenomena such as the radio which was al ways too loud, the haircut that wasn’t to our liking, the dirty socks under the bed, etc., your angry feelings won’t amount to much.
I won’t get anothe r chance to tell my son all that I would have wanted him to hear, but, other parents, you do have a chance. Tell your young people what you would want them to hear if you knew it would be your last conversation. The last time I talked to Jim was the day he died. He called me to say, “Hi, Mom! I just called to say I love you. Got to go to work. Bye.” He gave me something to treasure forever.
If there is any purpose at all for Jim’s death, maybe it is to make others appreciate more of life and to have people, especially family members, take the time to let each other know just how much we care.
53. According to the passage, we know that ____.
A. Jim kept to himself

C. Jim’s parents were patient with him
D. Jim failed to finish his high school
54. The underlined word “irritating” in Paragraph 4 means ____.
A. annoying
B. aggressive

A. mourn(哀悼)he r son’s sudden death in a traffic accident
B. remind people to be cautious of motorcycles
C. advise people to take the chance to express their love in time
D. appreciate more of life than ever before
56. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Love Your Family.
B. Do It Today.
C. Walk with Pride.

It’s really true what people say about English politeness: it’s everywhere. When squeezing past someone in a narrow aisle, people say “sorry”. When getting off a bus, English passengers say “thank you”rather than the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things. After all, squeezing past others is sometimes inevitable, and the bus driver is merely doing his job. I used to think the same way, without questioning it, until I started travelling to the British Isles and came to appreciate some more polite ways of interacting with people.
People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customer and retail assistant in most cases thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be exceptional to hear more than one thank you in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, as opposed to Germans, who would normally think tha t paying their workers money is already enough.
Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers emphasized several times but none of their explanations were intended as criticism. It has been my impression that by avoiding criticism, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable. This also is showed in other ways. British men still open doors for women, and British men are more likely to treat women to a meal than German men. However, I do need to point out here that this applies to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men! Yes, the latter are a bit tightfisted.
61. What is the author’s attitude towards English politeness?
A. He thinks it is artificial
B. He gives no personal opinion
C. He appreciates it
D. He thinks it goes too far.
62. What can we learn about customers and retail assistants in Germany?
A. A customer never says thank you to a retail assistant.
B. It’s always a retail assistant who says thank you.
C. They may say thank you only once.
D. they always say thank you to each other.
63. We can learn from the last paragraph that Scottish men __________.
A. are more likely to be involv ed in a fighting.
B. are more polite than English men.
C. treat women in a polite way.
D. are not so willing to spend money for women.
64. The author of this text is most probably ___________.
A. an Englishman
B. a German
C. a Scottish man
D. a Welshman
65. The author develops the text through the method of ____________.
A. making comparisons
B. telling stories
C. giving comments
D. giving reasons

I was puzzled! Why was this old woman so concerned about the woods which were of no use
to anybody? She had written letters to the local paper, even to a national, protesting about a projected by-pass to her village, and, looking at a map, the route was nowhere near where she lived and it wasn't as if the area was attractive. I was more than puzzled, I was fascinated.
The investigation into the route of the new by-pass to the village was due to take place shortly, and I wanted to know what it was that motivated (驱使) her. So it was that I found myself knocking on a cottage door, being received by Mary Smith and then being taken for a walk to the woods.
"I've always loved this place", she said, "it has a lot of memories for me, and for others. We all used it. They called it 'Lovers lane'. It's not much of a lane, and it doesn't go anywhere important, but that's why we all came here. To be away from people, to be by ourselves " she added.
It was indeed pleasant that day and the songs of many birds could be heard. Squirrels gazed from the branches, quite bold in their movements, obviously few people pa ssed this way and they had nothing to fear. I could imagine the noise of vehicles passing through these peaceful woods when the by-pass was built, so I felt that she probably had something there but as I held strong opinions about the needs of the community over-riding the opinions of private individuals, I said nothing. The village was quite a dangerous place because of the traffic especially for old people and children, their safety was more important to me than an old woman's strange idea.
"Take this tree", she said pausing after a short while. "To you it is just that, a tree. Not unlike many others here". She gently touched the bark (树皮). "Look here, under this branch, what can you see?"
"It looks as if someone has done a bit of carving with a knife" I said.
"Yes, that's what it is!" she said softly,“…….....”
She went on "He had a penknife with a spike for getting stones from a horse's hoof, and I helped him to carve them. We were very much in love, but he was going away, and could not tell me what he was involved in the army. I had guessed of course. It was the last evening we ever spent together, because he went away the next day, back to his Unit."
Mary Smith was quiet for a while, then she sobbed. "His mother showed me the telegram. 'Sergeant R Holmes …. Killed in action in the invasion of France”.
"I had hoped that you and Robin would one day get married" she said, "He was my only child, and I would have loved to be a Granny, they would have been such lovely babies'- she was like that! "
"Two years later she too was dead. 'Pneumonia (肺炎), following a chill(着凉) on the chest' was what the doctor said, but I think it was an old fashioned broken heart. A child would have helped both of us."
There was a further pause. Mary Smith gently hugged the wounded tree, just as she would have hugged him. "And now they want to take our tree away from me." Another quiet sob, then she turned to me. "I was young and pretty then, I could have had anybody, I wasn't always the old woman you see here now. I had everything I wanted in life, a lovely man, health and a future to look forward to".
She paused again and looked around. The breeze gently moved through the leaves with a sighing sound. "There were others, of course, but not a patch on my Robin!" she said strongly. "And now I have nothing - except the memories this tree holds. If only I could get my hands on that awful man who writes in the paper about the value of the road they are going to build where
we are standing now, I would tell him. Has he never loved, has he never lived, does he not know anything about memories? We were not the only ones, you know, I still meet some who came here as Robin and I did. Yes, I would tell him!"
I turned away, sick at heart.

Here is my idea about how a friend is like. Firstly, a friend is someone you can share your
secrets. If you tell him a secret, never will he talk about it with anybody else. Besides, a friend is always good listener when you need one. After hear your sad stories, he will say some words that is nice and warm. Still, your happiness makes him happily too. What’s more, a good friend is willing to offer help to which you need, or can at least give you some advices. One possible version :
Recently a survey has been conducted about whether it is wise for parents to drive their children to school and back home. The findings are as follows.
The supporters believe that more valuable time can be saved for students to get enough sleep. What’s more, they think it reasonable just for the sake of children’s safety. Also, in their opinion, it is a good chance for parents to communicate with their children.
However, there are still many people who hold different opinions. They believe that it results in more traffic jams, especially around schools in rush hours. Still, some of them think driving kids to and fro m school will undoubtedly add to the parents’ burdens in aspects like time, energy and expenses. Some even worry that in the long term children may be more independent on their parents, which does more harm than good.
To my understanding, I think it unwise for parents to drive their children to and from school. Children should learn to take good care of themselves, which is a necessary process of growth.。
