This romantic guy folded 1 000 pieces of papercranes as a gift to his girl. Although, at that time he was just a small executive in his company, his future didn’t seemed too bright, they were very happy together. Until one day, his girl told him she was going to Paris and would never come back. She also told him that she cannot visualize any future for the both of them, so just went their own ways there and then. Heartbroken, the guy agreed. When he regained his confidence, he worked hard day and night, slogging his body and mind just to make something out of himself. Finally with all the hard work and with the help of friends, this guy had set up his own company…“You never fail until you stop trying,” he always told himself. “I must make it in life!”One rainy day, while this guy was driving, he saw an elderly couple sharing an umbrella in the rain walking to some destination. Even with the umbrella, they were still drenched. It didn’t take him long to realize those were his ex-girlfriend’s parents. With a heart in getting back at them, he drove slowly beside the couple, wanting them to spot him in his luxury sedan. He wanted them to know that he wasn’t the same anymore, he had his own company, car, condo, etc. He had made it in life! Before the guy can realize, the couple was walking towards a cemetery, and he got out of his car and followed them… and he saw his ex-girlfriend, a photograph of her smiling sweetly as ever at him from her tombstone… and he saw his precious papercranes in a bottle placed beside her tomb. Her parents saw him. He walked over and asked them why this had happened. They explained, she did not leave for France at all. She was stricken ill with cancer. In her heart, she had believed that he will make it someday, but she did not want her illness to be his obstacle… therefore she had chosen to leave him.She had wanted her parents to put his papercranes beside her, because, if the day comes when fate brings him to her again he can take some of those back with him. The guy just wept… the worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them but knowing you can t have them and will never see them again.16. Indifferent.BAttitude is one of the most important factors in determining success for all people. Successful people have one thing in common—an expectant attitude towards success. Most people begin each morning neutrally and react to events of the day. You can be one of the successful people in life by starting each day with a positive attitude, a deep gratitude to the opportunities you have, and an expectation of the best for yourself.People tend to live up to expectations. We get out of life just what we put into it. Our environment becomes a mirror of our spirit, our attitude and expectations. If we set a great goal, we’ll get great results; if we have a fair goal, we’ll get fair results; if we have a poor goal, we’ll get poor results. The world will give you back what you expect, so expect the very best. Don’t be defensive or doubtful. Nothing changes unless you do. Before you can do something, you’ve got to be something. Know that you have worth and value. Show that to the world.Treat everyone you come into contact with as the most important person in life. It will build self esteem. Smile! You’ll be rewarded with a returned smile. Don’t treat others rudely. Forgive everyone who ever hurts you. Then, forgive yourself. Keep yourself healthy. Exercise. Have a proper diet. Display an attitude of confidence.Develop these good habits and your expectancy will be rewarded by success. This attitude will put you into that group of people who are truly successful, because you will know and understand how an expectant attitude enhances every aspect of your life.20. The author thinks that we can achieve success if we .A. take a positive attitudeB. hold on to our dreamsC. have a good opportunityD. show gratitude every day21. 2012届高考英语考前冲刺精选阅读理解Part ADirections:Read the following four texts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (40 points)Text 1Not long after the telephone was invented, I assume, a call was placed. The caller was a parent saying, “your child is bullying my child, and I want it stopped!” The bully's parent replied, “you must have the wrong number. My child is a little angel.”A trillion phone calls later, the conversation is the same. When children are teased or tyrannized, the parental impulse is to grab the phone and rant. But these days, as studies in the U.S. show bullying on the rise and parental supervision on the decline, researchers who study bullying say that calling moms and dads is more futile than ever. Such calls often lead to playground recriminations and don't really teach our kids any lessons about how to navigate the world and resolve conflicts. When you call parents, you want them to “extract the cruelty”from their bullying children, says Laura Kavesh, a child psychologist in Evanston, Illinois. “But many parents are blown away by the idea of their child being cruel. They won t believe it.”In a recent police department survey in Oak Harbor, Washington, 89% of local high school students said they had engaged in bullying behavior. Yet only 18% of parents thought their children would act as bullies. In a new U.S.PTA survey, 5% of parents support contacting other parents to deal with bullying. But many educators warn that those conversations can be misinterpreted, causing tempers to flare. Instead, they say, parents should get objective outsiders, like principals, to mediate. Meanwhile, if you get a call from a parent who is angry about your child's bullying, listen without getting defensive. That's what Laura McHugh of Castro Valley, California, did when a caller told her that her then 13-year-old son had spit in another boy's food. Her son had confessed, but the victim's mom “wanted to make sure my son hadn't given her son a nasty disease,” says McHugh, who apologized and promised to get her son tested for AIDS and other diseases. She knew the chance of contracting any disease this way was remote, but her promise calmed the mother and showed McHugh's son that his bad behaviour was being taken seriously. McHugh, founder of Parents Coach Kids, a group that teaches parenting skills, sent the mom the test results. All were negative.Remember: once you make a call, you might not like what you hear. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and 16 becomes unhappy. This arises from the 17 ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.People who are to be happy 18 their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the dishes 19 well, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful 20. Those 21 are to be unhappy think and speak only of the 22 things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By theirremarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend〔hurt〕many people, and 23 themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was 24 in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be 25. The intention of criticizing〔批评〕and being disliked is perhaps taken up 26 imitation〔模仿). It grows 27 a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, 28 it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them 29 this habit.Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no 30 treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into 31. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position 32 fortune, nobody wishes them success. 33 will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and 34 will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, 35 will be good for others to avoid any contact〔接触〕with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.16. A. other B. the other C. others D. another17. The reason I say that, is because I wanted to become rich when I played Monopoly, that was, I was nine years old. The greatest formula for wealth is found on that board game. When I was nine years old my poor dad, the schoolteacher said, “Ah, put the game away. Study, study, study! You’re wasting your time playing Monopoly.〞And my rich dad said the formula, “You must open your mind and see the formula right on Monopoly.〞He said, “It’s right in front of you.〞And I went, “What’s the formula?〞 And finally I learned the formula is, four green houses, red hotel, four green houses, red hotel. Today I’m a rich man because all I ever did since the time I was 24 years old was to buy four green houses, sell them all to buy a red hotel, four green houses, red hotel. It is not, you do not have to go to school to become rich. Just play Monopoly; four green houses, red hotel. That is it.You must look at how people before you have become rich. Do not talk to poor people. Poor people will tell you, “Oh, it’s too risky. Don’t do that. Don’t tak e risk. Save your money. Play it safe.〞That is a poor person’s mindset. You must have open mindset, open. And if you have an open mindset you will learn from everything. If you have a closed mindset you will learn from nothing. So I think that is the most important. No, I don’t have a salary. I only had a job four years in my life. I don’t want a salary. The middle class and poor, what they want is high income. They think they want money. But they have no wealth because they have no assets. You must know the difference between money and wealth, but they’re not the same things. Money will never make you rich. This makes you rich. I have large companies. I have lots of stocks.I trade options. I have real estate, that’s what makes me rich, so the money just comes in whether I work or not.Bill Gates only makes $500 000 a year. That’s all. I make more than him. That’s all he makes but he’s worth $20 billion. I’m trying to tell you there is a very big difference between income, money and wealth. So I have spent my life buying assets, businesses, stocks, real estate, that’s what makes me rich, not a job. The reason the rich in America get richer is they pass this on to their kids. My poor dad always said, “High paying job, high paying job, high paying job.〞 And my rich dad said, “Assets, assets, assets.〞That’s the difference. There’s a saying in America, the world will not change until the old men die, like me, you know? So the strength that China has is you have the highest growth rate right now. You also have a young population. In the next ten years you will become, in my opinion, the richest country in the world and you’re in the best place at the best time. China is in a great time and will undoubtfully have a bright future.D. Both the young and the old should work hard for the prosperity〔繁荣〕of their country.39. It found changes in the way that American wives and husbands share economic responsibility for their families. The study found a big increase in the percentage of married women who earn more money than their husbands. The researchers studied information about married couples from nineteen seventy through two thousand seven. The study centered on couples between the ages of thirty and forty-four who were born in the United States. In that group, twenty-two percent of the wives earned more than their husbands during the most recent year of the study. Thirty-seven years ago, just four percent of wives were top earners. Emily Mendell cheered the news in a blog she co-writes called mothersofbrothers . Mrs Mendell supervises communications for a financial industry association in Washington, D.C. She earns more than her husband, Dave, who is a school teacher. But she says their unequal incomes are no reason for tensions. Emily Mendell says she and her husband have separate bank accounts. This helps avoid arguments about spending money. Money is considered the number one reason for arguments between married couples. Job satisfaction for the lower earning partner is also important. Emily Mendell says her husband Dave really enjoys his job as a teacher. He knows he is doing something important in their community.Mrs Mendell also says it is important to look at family life as a whole. She says both partners have to give their time, effort and, in many cases, income for the good of the family. Emily Mendell says, “If your marriage is equal, holistically, in what you contribute it makes very little difference as to who’s earning more money.〞Much of the discussion about income has focused on one person in the marriage earning more than the other. But Emily Mendell says that good marriages bring together the skills and ideas that make a family work. Emily Mendell says, “I think the best marriages do that on equal footing across the board even though in certain areas one person may be contributing more than others.〞 She likes to point out that cooking is not one of the skills that she brings to the family. Luckily, her husband Dave has that covered.40. This passage probably appears in .A. an advertisementB. a storyC. a journalD. a proposal41. What can we learn from the passage?A. Nowadays wives earn more than their husbands.B. Unequal incomes between married couples are not the reason for tensions.C. Emily has a bad relationship with her husband because of his low income.D. People discussed a lot about one person in the marriage earning more than the other.42. According to Emily, .A. Emily’s husband is not satisfied with his incomeB.

Take bladderworts, a kind of such plant, for example. They appear so small and grow in a quiet pond. But these are the fastest known killers of the plant kingdom, able to capture a small insect in 1/50 of a second using a trap door!Once the trap door closes on the victim, the enzymes(酶) similar to those in the human stomach slowly digest the insect. When dinner is over, the plant opens the trap door and is ready to trap again.Meat-eating plants grow mostly in wet areas with soil that doesn't offer much food value. In such conditions, these amazing plants have developed insect traps to get their nutritional needs over thousands of years. North America has more such plants than any other continent.Generally speaking, the traps may have attractive appearance to fool the eye, like pitcher plants, which get their name because they look like beautiful pitchers (a container like a bottle) full of nectar(花蜜).The Asian pitcher plant, for example, has bright colors and an attractive half closed lid. Curious insects are tempted to come close and take a sip, and then slide down the slippery(光滑的) slope to their deaths.Hair like growths along the pitcher walls ensure that nothing cab escape, and the digestive enzymes can get to work. A tiny insect can be digested in a few hours, but a fly takes a couple of days. Some of these pitchers are large enough to hold two gallons. Meat-eating plants only eat people in science fiction movies, but sometimes a bird or other small animals will discover that a pitcher plant isn't a good place to get a drink.16. From the first paragraph, we can know that bladderworts can .A. capture 50 small insects in a secondB. capture an insect in the shortest timeC. be found floating on a quiet lakeD. digest an insect in 1/50 of a second17. If the trap door of a meat-eating plant is closed, the plant .A. is fooling insects into taking a sipB. is producing nectarC. is tempting insects to come closeD. is enjoying a dinner18. Meat-eating plants can grow in wet and poor soil because they .A. can get nutrition from animalsB. don't need much food valueC. can make the most of such conditionsD. have developed digestive enzymes19. Which of the following is the picture of the Asian pitcher plant?20. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A. South Asia has the most meat-eating plants.B. Some of the meat-eating plants can even eat a human.C. Hair like growths in the plants help trap insects.D. The traps of these plants have a dull color.BMath Goes Hi-techThe fear of high school math is lost here among the blue glow of computer screen and the sounds of typing keyboards.A fanfare(号角齐鸣) plays from a speaker as a student passes a chapter test. Nearby, another student works out an equation(方程式) in her notebook before clicking on a multiple choice answer on her screen.Their teacher at Agoura High School, US, Russell Stephans, sits at the back of the room, watching grade sheets on his computer as scores pop up in real time. One student has passed a level, the data shows; another is retaking a quiz.“Whoever thought this up makes life so much easier,” Stephans says.Slowly, but in increasing numbers, schools across the US are replacing the heavy and expensive textbook with its lighter and cheaper cousin: the digital textbook. A digital textbook can be downloaded, projected and printed, and can range from a simple text to a curriculum filled with multimedia and links to Internet content. Some visions must be purchased; others are “open sources”—free and available online to anyone. Some praise the technology as a way to save school money, replace outdated books and better attract students. Others say most schools don't have the resources to join in, or they question the quality of the content of open sources.Paper textbooks still take up a large part of the US textbook market, with digital textbook making up less than 5 percent, according to analyst Kathy Mickey of Simba Information, a market research group. But that is changing, as grade schools follow the lead of the US universities and schools in other countries, including South Korea and Turkey.California made the largest embrace(欣然接受) of digital textbooks this summer whenit approved 10 free high school math and science titles developed by college professors.“Paper textbooks are outdated, as far as I'm concerned, and there's no reason why our schools should have our students use these outdated and heavy and expensive books,” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said this summer. But some disagree with the idea that digital textbooks will improve the education quality.“Keep in mind that with materials of open sources, you have to ask ‘Where are they from?’” said Jay Diskey, Executive Director of the Association of America Publishers School Division, “Is this a trusted source? Is it based on real research?”Diskey said traditional textbooks offer a comprehensive curriculum, while some textbooks of open sources provide only bits and pieces. “There can be quite a difference of contents and accuracy,” he said, “In many cases, you get what you pay for.”21. The writer's purpose in writing this article is to .A. explain how to use digital textbooksB. predict the future of paper textbooksC. describe the current use of digital textbooks and present arguments about itD. explain the difference between paper textbooks and digital ones22. What is Schwarzenegger's opinion of traditional textbooks?A. He is against abolishing them.B. He wants to have them replaced by digital books.C. Soon they will no longer be used.D.
