Text 1
W: Harry, are we too late for our dinner reservation?
M: No, they will hold our table. I know the owner very well. I eat there a lot.
Text 2
W: Will you grab some peanut butter from the store, please? I want to make some cookies later.
M: Sure thing, honey. I’ll grab some when I get coffee later. I think we’re running low on milk, too.
Text 3
M: How many students passed the final English exam in your class?
W: Thirty. But still as many as 40 percent of the class failed. Quite disappointing, isn’t it?
Text 4
W: I heard you had a barbecue down at the beach. How did it go?
M: It poured. We had to postpone it again.
Text 5
M: When are we supposed to hand in our term paper, Mary?
W: They are due by the end of the week. We’ve only two days left. We’ll just have to hurry.
Text 6
M: Excuse me. We’re doing a research about people’s first jobs. Can you say something about yours?
W: Well, yes. It was with a large international company. They have a training program
for people from university and, well, that was my first job, the secretary of the training manager.
M: Did you enjoy it?
W: Yes, I did. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do when I left university, so it was good to see what the different departments did. It was really practical.
M: It sounds interesting.
W: Yes, it was. But it was very badly paid.
Text 7
M: I really need to study hard these next two weeks. Otherwise, I might fail the biology test!
W: I guess you don’t want to see the football match next weekend then?
M: What? It’s next weekend? The radio announcement said it was on the 28th at 5:00 pm.
W: The schedule was changed due to a conflict with the television network — it’s going to take place a week earlier at the same time.
M: My grade in biology is more important than one little football game, but I have been waiting for this match all year.
W: Maybe you should stay home all next week studying. I’ll help you. Then we can go to the game on Saturday together.
M: Great!
W: But you have to buy my dinner, OK?
M: Fine.
Text 8
M: I’d like to pay a visit to the Smiths at 3:30 pm. Will you go with me, Mary?
W: I’d love to, but I won’t be off work from my factory until 4:00 pm. How about 4:15? I’ll be free then, Jack.
M: OK. Let’s meet at the bus stop and take the No. 5 bus to go there.
W: Why not go by bike? The bus would be crowded at that time.
M: But my bike is broken.
W: You can use your sister’s new bike, can’t you?
M: Yes. I’ll wait for you in front of the bookstore opposite the cinema.
Text 9
M: I’m really mad at Mom and Dad.
W: Why? What did they do?
M: I asked them for a leather jacket for my birthday, and they just got me this stupid raincoat.
W: Oh, come on! It’s a beautiful raincoat.
M: I don’t care! I want a leather jacket. I tried on Bill’s, and I look great in it.
W: You know, leather is expensive. Maybe they didn’t have enough money.
M: I want to return it and get leather! All my friends have leather jackets.
W: They don’t all have leather jackets, Sam.
M: Anyway, on your birthday Mom and Dad gave you what you asked for!
W: That’s true, but all I asked for was a new pair of jeans.
M: I hate this raincoat.
W: All right, how much is a leather jacket?
M: If I return this raincoat, I only need $50.
W: I’ll lend you the $50, but you have to pay me back.
M: Great. Way to go!
Text 10
M: Good evening, everyone. Welcome to our Environmental Protection Club. It’s a pleasure to see many new faces here. I’m John, president of this club. Our club was set up in 2002 and the aim of the club is to make our life greener, so every member of this club is supposed to take some action to protect our environment.
We will have different activities to achieve our aim. As for the first month of this term, we are going to finish several tasks. On Friday afternoon this week all members are supposed to plant trees in the nearest park. The next day, Alice, professor of environmental science, will give us a lecture. We may also visit a farm nearby next Sunday if the weather permits. Usually we have meetings on Mondays, but this week we’ll have another one on Wednesday to discuss the arrangements in detail.。
