第二部分阅读理解(满分50分)
第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
I have a rule for travel: Never carry a map. I prefer to ask for directions.
Foreign visitors are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit marks. The post office is across from the bus stop. ”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, usually there are not many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat. In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure distance by means of time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” You ask, “Oh,” They answer, “It’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because visitors seldom understand the Greek language. Instead of giving you the direction, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to you r question. What happens in this situation?
A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers, “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan think that “I don’t know.” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
However, one thing will help you everywhere --- in Japan, in the United States, in Greece, in Mexico, or in any other place. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction. Go in that direction and you may find the post office!
41. The passage mainly tells us that _______.
A. the writer never carries a map for travel
B. there are not many landmarks in the American Midwest
C. people in different countries give directions in different ways
D. New Yorkers often say, “I have no idea,” but people in Yucatan, Mexico, never say this
42. The passage says, “In Japan, people use landmarks in their directions. “The word “landmarks”
means _______.
A. building names
B. street names
C. hotels, markets and bus stops
D. buildings or places which are easily recognized
43. In which place do people tell distance by means of time?
A. Japan
B. American Midwest
C. Los Angeles, California
D. Greece
44. According to the text, visitors often get lost in Yucatan because .

Your teens don’t want you to be their friends. What they need is for you to be a reliable responsible role model worthy of their respect, and not some overgrown child who wears too tight jeans or T-shirts.
Don’t debate the teen e ver. If she wants to debate, suggest she sign up for the Debate Club. If you buy into their teen logic (which is basically illogic, the product of an immature brain and every extreme of emotion known to mankind) your mouth will go dry. Teens need to know that no means no. Remember when your teen was two years old and he said “no” a lot? Well now it’s your turn, particularly when your teen wants to engage in behaviors that are dangerous.
Don’t buy your teen a car. If you do, he will total it in record time. Guaranteed. The teen should earn the car, or at least a portion of it (and by that I don’t mean one of the tires). You know how you
take much better care of an item of clothing you spent a fortune on compared to one you bought in a bargain basement? It’s t he same thing, only a car can do serious damage.
Encourage sports participation even if your teen has two left feet. In some sports, two left feet won’t knock him out of the box, so to speak. Sports participation develops perseverance and cheerfully functioning as a team member. You also will know where your child is every day after school (on the field, that is, or at a rival school).
Let the school know you in a good way so that school personnel do not dive under the desk when you approach. If you are asked to speak at the school, your teen will feel mighty proud. If you make something for the bake sale, try to make it taste edible and if you can’t see it through, do yourself and your child a favor and buy something at the local bakery or supermarket.
To k now your teens’ friends is to know your teens. Teens have a secret life, and a parent’s goal is to find out secrecy that is sometimes thicker than the CIA and the KGB combined. If you really want to know what your kid is up to, get to know their friends. How? By being warm and kind, and by asking questions that don’t sound like an interrogation, but serve that purpose without their knowing it.
45. When your kids are doing something that might negatively affect their future, you should
_____________.
A. have your kids express their opinions fully and then discuss with them
B. think about how you can be their close friends
C. report that to their school immediately
D. say no and tell them that they must stop
46. According to the passage, as a parent, you should encourage your kids __________.
A. to wear too tight jeans
B. to sign up for the Debate Club
C. to be greatly involved in sports
D. to make as many friends as they can
47. The underlined word “total” in the third paragraph probably mea ns ________.
A. damage
B. add
C. buy
D. earn
48. The passage mainly wants you to know that __________.
A. kids have their secrecy and freedom
B. Raising Teenagers calls for certain parenting skills
C. your teen needs some house rules
D. the family is changing
C
For some parents, the Internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But jungles contain wonders as well as danger and with good guides, some education, and a few precautions, the wilds of the Internet can be safely navigated . “Kids have to be on-line. If we tell our kids they can’t have chance to the Internet, we’re cutting them off from their future.” said an expert.
Most kids have started to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of
interesting Internet sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go. There are search engines designed just for kids. A certain software contains only sites that have been chosen as safe. The most popular way to limit chance would be to use what is known as a “content screener”, but this can’t be wholly reliable , and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what is OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet.
Four other tips:
—Don’t put the PC in a child’s room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.
—Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make on-line.
—Tell your child not to give on-line strangers personal information, especially like address and phone number.
—And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on-line over the phone, send them anything, accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along.
49. The passage is mainly about the subject of .
A. the Children going on-line
B. the internet in America
C. appreciating the internet
D. opposing children’s on-line
50. The best way to protect children from improper materials is .
A. to install a content screener on the computer
B. to buy some search engines for the children
C. to be nearby when they are surfing the Internet
D. to educate the children and persuade them to tell right from wrong
51. Which of the following is right according to the passage?
A. Surfing the Internet is the best method of educating children.
B. Children’s not having chan ce to the Internet may have effect on their progress.
C. Using a content screener is most reliable for keeping children having chance to the Internet.
D. Searching engines can help children to select materials fit for them.
52. According to the passage, we can infer that .
A. softwares are fit for children who want programming
B. a child who is on-line is in danger
C. Internet is a jungle full of danger
D. Internet contains a lot of harmful sites

CHENGDU, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Southwest Jiaotong University in Sichuan Province is trying to develop the vacuum tube high speed train with a speed of 600 to1,000 kph.
Limited by the energy consumption, noise and other factors in the atmosphere, the actual operating speed of a train is expected not to more than 400 Kph at present.
Its idea is to build up a vacuum tube separating from the outside air to run the maglev train in it. The vacuum maglev train is then able to run in a higher speed without wheel track friction and with much lower air resistance.
It was reported that this technology is expected to be widely adopted in around 2030, when the traveling time between Beijing and Guangzhou is expected to be cut into one to 2.5 hours to run the 2,300 kilometers distance.

New rules will let millions of Americans know where more of their food comes from. The law is known as COOL—Country of Origin Labeling.
American Congress first passed the law in 2002. Stores have had to label seafood by country of origin since 2005. But industry pressure delayed other requirements until last week.
Products that must now be labeled include fresh fruits and vegetables, muscle meats and some kinds of nuts. But the rules are complex, and many foods are excluded. For example, organ meats are free to be labeled. So are processed foods, including cooked or smoked food.
The United States has imported more and more food in recent years to save money and expand choices. Country-of-origin labeling has become more common lately but has still been limited in many stores.
Food safety is one reason why some shoppers pay close attention to where foods came from. For example, when a large number of people recently got sick from salmonella(沙门菌病), officials blamed peppers from Mexico. Yet the last big food scare involved spinach (菠菜) grown in California. But labeling is also a way for people to know they are getting what they want. Some want to buy local foods or foods from a particular country.
The country-of-origin labeling law gives stores 30 days to correct any violations that are found. Stores and suppliers that are found to be deliberately violating the law could be fined 1000 dollars per violation. Federal inspectors are not to take action to enforce the law for six months to give time for an education campaign.
Some food safety activists say they are generally pleased with the law. They call it a good step that will give people more useful information.
56. What’s the regulation in the n ew rules?
A. Stores have to label food by its producing date from now on.
B. The country-of-origin labeling has to be marked on more food.
C. Stores have to label seafood by country of origin.
D. Labeling of food should include more useful information.
57. Why has more and more food been imported to the United States in recent years?
A. Because it is economical and provides people with more choices.
B. Because the United States is short of food supply.
C. Because Americans need more and more food recently.
D. Because foreign food is of higher quality than native food.
58. Consumers are more concerned about where foods came from because ______.
A. they are curious about the country of the food origin
B. they are particular about the tastes of the food
C. they are concerned about food safety and want to get what they want
D. most of the shoppers are food safety activists themselves
59. The new rules of the country-of-origin labeling law will come into effect ______.
A. right now
