Jack gets along well with his colleagues at work, but not with those who matter the most to him. If you were to ask them why, they would say that Jack is “too nervous”. Smashie was a little cat that was given a home by my wife before she knew me. When I came onto the scene, he was unwilling to share his home with another man and let me know this on one of the first weekends when I visited. Smashie jumped onto my stomach and walked up to my chest to express his anger, but then, quite calmly, walked off. Having made his point, we then became good friends.
Some years after we were married, we were woken up at four o'clock in the morning by an uneasy sense that was not good. Smashie was on the bed as usual, but when we switched on the light, we saw blood on the bed sheet and then we found that one of his front paws was badly injured. We thought he had been under a car and his paw had been trapped under one of the wheels as the car pulled away.
We rushed him to a veterinarian and he was given surgery. His paw was saved. He came home with a large bandage (绷带) on his paw, some medicine and a “buster collar” to stop him from getting to the bandage. We saw him repeatedly butting (用头顶) the wall so he could get to the bandage, but apart from this he was an excellent patient. We took him to the veterinarian every few days and he became a favorite there. He took his
medicine and stayed indoors.
A few years later, he returned the favor when I was badly injured in a road accident. As soon as I was on the sofa, Smashie jumped onto my stomach, walked up to my chest and settled down, sleeping. It was the best medicine I could have had.
25.What did Smashie’s behavior show when the writer first saw him?
A.Smashie was a good friend of the writer's wife
B.Smashie was given a home by the writer's wife
C.Smashie wanted to play with the writer
D.Smashie didn't want to live with the writer
26.When the writer was injured, the cat's company ________.
A.made no difference to him B.made him regret what he had done to him C.greatly annoyed him D.made him feel much better
27.What was the use of the “buster collar”?
A.T o make sure the surgery would go well.
B.T o help stop bleeding.
C.To prevent the cat from touching the bandage
D. To fix the paw that was injured.
28.After reading the passage, we can infer that a veterinarian is someone who ________.
A.treats sick or injured animals B.helps take care of animals at home C.trains pets for their owners D.works in a medicine store

Tips for avoiding traffic jams:
The radio has more than just music. Check the local news station for the latest traffic report. Or go online and check traffic cameras before you set out. If there is a jam, you'll be prepared and can try another route.
Take the road less traveled. Although highways may be the most direct route, back (偏僻的) roads can be much less crowded, which can save you from the frustration of the stop-and-go traffic.
Rush hour isn't just a lovely nickname. It means the morning and afternoon traffic lasts for several hours, but they're still called “rush hour” for a reason — everyone's on the road and in a hurry to get somewhere. Treat rush hour like bad weather — if you don't have to go anywhere, stay off the roads.
Tips for those unavoidable traffic jams:
Don't break the law. You've gone 30 feet in 30 minutes and all of a sudden you see people using the shoulders (紧急停车道). Don't behave like them. Not only is this illegal, but also there's a good chance they'll get caught or cause even more problems.
Pay extra attention to zig-zaggers (Z字形行进者). When some people are anxious, they may start changing lanes (车道) every 5 seconds or cut you off. Keep checking your windows and mirrors for these lane changers.
Look for an escape. If it is possible to exit the road safely, do it. Use a GPS unit, and you can change your route mid-trip if needed.
Be polite. Good manners could help you avoid a possible accident. Allow people in from a lane that is ending. Speeding up to keep them out increases your chances of an accident.
29.T o avoid traffic jams, we are advised to do the following EXCEPT ________.
A.avoid rush hours B.change lanes frequently
C.choose back roads D.get traffic news before leaving 30.What should we do when there are zig-zaggers?
A.Drive quickly to keep them out. B.. Keep checking the mirrors.
C.Stop and let them go first D.Sound the horn loudly.
31.In which part of a magazine can this passage be found?
A.Market B. Entertainment.
C.Life. D.Advertisement.

Students who say they never or hardly ever use dictionaries often speak English well but usually write poorly, because they make many mistakes.
The students who use dictionaries most do not learn especially well either. The ones who look up every new word do not read fast. Therefore they do not have time to read much. Those who use small two-language dictionaries have the worst problems. Their dictionaries often give only one or two words as translations of English. But one English word often has many translations in a foreign language and one foreign word has many translations in English.
The most successful students are those who use large college edition dictionaries with about 100,000 words but do not use them too often. When they are reading, these students first try to get the general idea and understand new words from the context. Then they reread and use the dictionary to look up only key words that they still do not understand. They use dictionaries more for writing. If they are not sure how to spell a word, or divide it into syllables (音节), they always use a dictionary. Also, if they think a noun might have an unusual plural form, they check these in a dictionary. 32.According to the passage, which of the following is wrong?
A. Small two-language dictionaries have serious defects (缺陷).
B. Dictionaries have little effect on learning to speak English.
C. Reading something for the first time, you’d better not use dictionaries.
D. Whatever new words you meet while reading, never use dictionaries. 33.When in the reading does the writer advise students to use a good dictionary?
A. At the beginning of the reading
B. During the first reading
C. After the first reading
D. At the end of the reading
34.The writer thinks that .
A. using dictionaries very often can’t help to improve writing
B. it is very important for students to use good dictionaries properly
C. dictionaries are not necessary to the students who learn English
D. choose a good dictionary, and you’ll be successful in learning English
35.This passage mainly tells us .
A. what dictionary students should choose and how to use it
B. what were the defects of small two-language dictionaries
C. students shouldn’t use small two-language dictionaries
D. why students should use large college edition dictionaries
